Fate to Despair (Restored - Roland SC-88) - Castlevania Circle of the Moon
Another great track from Castlevania: Circle of the Moon. This one uses several layers of BrightStr, plus a French Horn preset, Timpani, some Crash Cymbals, and the Harp from the SC-55 map.
Interesting fact: the soundtrack for the game contains a lot of well known songs from previous Castlevania games, and Sotaro Tojima was responsible for arranging most of the tracks. But "Fate to Despair" is one of several original tracks that he composed for this game.
Technical notes: when you extract the midi files with GBA Mus Ripper, they are a bit complex and can't be used "out of the box" on the SC-88 or even with a SF2 player. Because there are a lot of overlapping volume curves and it creates audio clicks and bugs. I wrote a python script to convert the tracks to make my life easier (basically what it does is split each instrument track into multiple tracks to prevent volume curve overlapping). Once again, I work on each instrument stem separately (either from the SC-88 or my own VST) and I do the main mix afterwards.
"Fate to Despair" was composed by Sotaro Tojima.

Clockwork (Restored - Roland SC-88) - Castlevania Circle of the Moon

"Clockwork" is the name of a track originally composed by Hidenori Maezawa, Jun Funahashi, Yukie Morimoto and Yoshinori Sasaki on Castlevania III Dracula's Curse (NES). But for Circle of the Moon, Sotaro Tojima, who was responsible for arranging the majority of the game soundtrack, actually modified the original track quite a lot, giving it this unique vibe and colour. It sounds very different ...

Beautiful!, I get we all share the same spirit for golden sun, here.
If you do HoD, I would love to listen to your version of Offense and Defense.
I would love to do "something" with HoD, honestly. But sadly, out of the 3 GBA games, this one can't be restored. 95% of the tracks use GameBoy synths and no actual samples. Konami actually released an official soundtrack CD in 2002 and they did a great job cleaning up all the synths (fun fact: they re-used those cleaned-up tracks in the version of HoD that's included in the Castlevania Advance Collection. I double-checked myself). It's impossible to clean it further than that.
Please do "Awake"
I'm working on it! Very slowly, and there are a few instruments I haven't finished (that track has loads of different instruments and subtleties!). Really looking forward to publishing that track when it's done!
I played the games when they originally came out. It's hard to believe it's been 20 years. It's even harder to believe that I've never forgotten this theme. Thank you so much for doing this!
Coming across your channel has inspired me to start playing this game again. It's surprising that I remember playing and beating the first game and even using a guide to help find all the djinni and yet, I can't recall how I got the game. I know I didn't get it new though. I've never held the box or manual in my hands. I also remember playing through the opening of the Lost Age but never completing the game. That's a new goal of mine.
Have you ever played Megaman Battle Network 6? That game has some amazing tracks that I think a restored version would sound amazing for.
This is an amazing work, good job!
I'm impressed by how much work this must have been, and as a result how good this sounds! Do you know if the developers used the exact same samples, or did you find ones that were close enough to the sounds from the game? The cleaning up of the samples you couldn't find is *chef's kiss*.
Thank you! :) I worked closely with FreeJusticeHere (who's been doing research on the samples for longer than me), and I'm happy to say that together, we managed to find all the exact samples! It was a lot of work and research, but we made sure to validate the findings by comparing the waveforms and spectrogram data, for each instrument. To give you a general idea: - for most samples, I simply re-recorded them from the original hardware (SC-88, JV-1080 + expansion card), in high quality - a few samples were altered in post-prod by the composer, so we had to re-create those alterations manually (by making assumptions and trying things) - the GS2 drum samples were never identified, but I managed to find high quality versions on another GameCube game that Motoi Sakuraba worked on (and since this is a CD support, the samples were not compressed at all, so it's as good as finding the source). But I only found that source very late in the process, I'd like to re-do some GS2 tracks at some point.
@@JusteDni Ooh very impressive! I'm really impressed and glad you verified the samples together, now theses are the best quality of the songs that's possible without replacing anything. :D
This game was made recycling so many things from the previous game, in particular Shining force 3 design. The music as well remember the music of that game.
You can get this song by putting Jenna in front of Felix. I wish I knew this on my original playthrough.

With this, I can make my own Golden Sun-inspired tracks for my song pack! Will this work in OpenMPT? Or FLStudio, perhaps?
Absolutely! It's a standard VST2 plugin so it should work in any DAW! (I think OpenMPT supports VST plugins. FLStudio definitely does)
Sooo amazing❤🎉
Oh non, pas fourmi 1!!!!!!
🐸🫴🏽💕🥺
awesome videos! i was really curious if you had access to any sort of resource about sound modules or particular samples used in certain games or if this is something you were able to work out from your own knowledge
Thank you! :) For Golden Sun 1, most of the samples had already been found by other people, in the "VGM sound sources spreadsheet". For Golden Sun 2, I had hints on where to start (just the name of the modules: the JV-1080 and the expansion card) but I had to find most of the samples myself. And for Circle of the Moon, a lot of the samples sounded very familiar. I actually contacted the composer himself who kindly confirmed that he used a SC-88 Pro indeed (like a lot of GBA composers at the time). But sadly he didn't remember which exact patches he used, so I had to figure that out myself. Anyone can do it honestly, it's just time consuming: you sit down in front of the device and you explore the samples one by one. After a while, it trains your ear and you're able to recognize sounds and patterns more easily. The "advantage" I have is that I'm also a programmer, so I wrote some python scripts to make the process easier. I have a python auto-sampler, basically it's a very simple script that sends hundreds of Midi instructions to the hardware module, my sound card records each played sample, and the script puts everything in subfolders and separate .wav files. I still don't have a magic script that can find the samples for me though ;) I hope that answers your question!
Oh, so this uses a whole other rompler instead of the Sound Canvas? No wonder the sound felt so different!
Hello! I am very impressed and grateful for your work on this soundtrack, and also to those that preceded you. Something that I noticed is that the delay for the oboe comes too early. For this I will assume that the space between two vertical gray lines in your project is quarter notes. If so, the delay of the oboe should be really close to an eighth note, but just a tiny bit earlier. The pan flute delay is also very slightly too early but that one's hardly noticeable
Hello! Thanks for your feedback and your kind words! About the delay, I'm not entirely sure what you mean. You're talking about the "echo" effect done by duplicating an instrument track into a second one, with a slight offset for all notes, to create the delay, right? The midi sequences are extracted directly from the game, and while I do make a lot of alterations and fixes, I don't touch the note timings themselves. So if there's any kind of mistake, this would come from the conversion tool itself (gbamusriper). Which I can investigate if it's really the case (I've had to fix bugs in the C++ code already). But I don't think this is related to quarter vs eighth note.
This song literaly feels like home. It makes me so happy to hear this in such a crisp way.
Very nice! Ive always loved this theme and she was my favorite character of the whole series… After more than 20 years since I first played this game i still come back to it from time to time and i even play it sometimes. Her battle theme is truely special!!
Are the MIDI files available? I have an SC-88Pro too.

Thank you! I'm working on the other tracks but I got delayed by other things. Great profile pic btw! I immediately recognized Bear Walken :)
Man, I always remember when, back in 2005, this track sounded buggy in some parts when played in VBA emulator 😁 Such was the power needed for this banger.
FINALLY, somebody knows the name of this! I couldn't remember for the life of me, but this song has lived rent free in my head for over a decade, now!
I remember using this boss to level up my characters so they'd be even more OP in The Lost Age. Great memories with this game. It's a damn shame it isn't more well known
Wait, no; I used Saturos and Menardi for levels. This boss I had to allow myself to get beaten by so the grinding would work
