If, as seems to be the case, it is a rare and costly object as difficult to produce as a battleship, it is likelier to put an end to large-scale wars at the cost of prolonging indefinitely a “peace that is no peace”.
This narrator never watched tennis if he can’t pronounce “Agassi”. That’s ok though. Correct pronunciation is “Agga-see”.
Joan Didion is one of my favorite writers, and as a writer myself, I think my style is similar. With the current historic devastation in southern California, it is more prolific than ever. Timeless in fact.
A gas sea
I need this poem memorized for a school assignment so now im going to leave this on loop to help me memorize it. thanks for making this dude, I'd probably be screwed without it!
Interesting that I (or my unconscious) found this video while thinking about "learning" Spanish. Is it best to "learn" Spanish (study the rules, syntax, grammar, verb conjugation, etc.) or to instead follow the best path of "acquisition" of Spanish.
Is this D.F.Wallace reading?
No, it’s me
Have u never heard DFW speak?
Wow, thanks for this. Just subscribed. I love your channel, will be listening a lot.
Thank you very much for this! 😊 I really enjoyed it. I really miss DFW
I guess he wouldnt have lasted long with really bad parents.poor soul.
Is this from the book? Which chapters or pages? Thank you
This is the essay “Consider the Lobster” from Wallace’s essay collection of the same name
Ickle me pickle me tickle me too
I taught grade 11 and 12 English for more years than I care to remember and sometimes used this story as a vehicle to discuss theme and so on. However, I had the most fun getting students to mimic the tone and style of the story. The responses were often delightfully entertaining. One student had me rolling when he set the whole thing up around learning to play golf. Students were permitted to use phrase from the text but had to make them fir the new context. Hence in the context of golf it would be "forbidden to so strike your stone as to have it come to rest in the place that is sand, or off the narrow, verdant path that so many old ones have trod before." Another fun activity involved using short one or 2 page comics ( think Archie, Dennis the Menace) in order to get them to tell the story in words. This forced them to use quotations marks as well as select a point of view. (1st person, omniscient, limited omniscient, objective). Students were expected to provide a setting, illustrate what was happening to move the plot and to add tags reflecting how words were spoken: "Yes!" he cried happily. Thanks for this. It's been awhile and I always enjoyed this story. Seems to say something about our not learning and just repeating history. Definition of stupid, I believe. Also, just wondering too whether AI isn't coming on too fast or our own good.
Grateful for this ❤️❤️
I rilly like this
All animals have an unconscious otherwise they would be plants Unconscious as persistence. Using dreams in different ways Unconscious not using language Unconscious giving you general guidance but doesnt care about toothpaste - difficult dreams because wants to remember them
Thank you for this.
Draft- the American English spelling of Draught. Pronounced exactly the same.
Another good video. Keep it up my friend.
Thanks!
I wish there was a group of Didion fans that I could hear about and discuss her insights into this thing called life
I teach this story to my students. We watch clips of “Life After People” to give them an idea of what a city would look like. This story, like several of Ray Bradbury’s, warn of the consequences of nuclear war.
That’s a great idea for an instructional aid! Hope your class is going well
That’s a fantastic idea!
Thanks for this, I really didn't want to read this myself, listening is easier. I am using this for my English class. Your voice is also oddly calm, it helps me focus. I'm just following along with my paper packet.
Thanks for the kind words! This was actually the first recording I made for the channel on a not great mic. I’m glad it was of use, and good luck with class!
Ms. Didion has always been a favorite of mine
Thank you... Great Reading...
Thank you!
@@verbumdictum3956 Welcome...
A possible inspiration for the adventures of Jonny Goodboy Tyler in the novel BATTLEFIELD EARTH?
This is Joan Didion at her best. And the presentation is superb. Thank you. Robert R. Bryan
thanks
Look at the events of 9/11, then look at the events described here, the similarities are uncanny.
Thanks for your interesting insight!
Is there any official source of this essay ? I just want to make sure that Twain wrote this.
A great question! This appears to be one of his unpublished works, per a source I'll be linking in the description momentarily.
@@verbumdictum3956 This is really helpful, thanks a bunch my friend 🙏
I love this thank you
enjoying the Orwell readings. thank you . great selection btw
Hmm make me think of why the UK left the EU.
I'm undecided as to whether Orwell would have been Leave or Remain. Although I don't see how an essay written in the 1940s about a particular cultural phenomenon is in any way connected with the EU. Ireland has similar pubs and they're in the EU.
I live west of the great river. Though I am free to I do not need to go to the place of the dead. I choose not to follow their broken path. ☠️
Cool
It’s pronounced draught not draught
A man’s at odds to know his mind cause his mind is aught he has to know it with. He can know his heart, but he don’t want to. Rightly so. Best not to look in there.
Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
THE GREATEST TENNIS PLAYER OF ALL TIMES.
Thank you!

Seem rather true in the current era
Damn Cheechy
Interesting. And enjoyable
In 1993, in Jr. high, we read this short story, and it has been with me ever since. Are we the gods, or are we the people of this priest? Have we lost our history, or are we the history to be lost?
“We do not even say it’s name, though we know it’s name”
Thanks for making this.
Thanks for listening!
I’m grasping at the point or answer. It ebbs and flows like the tide. I understand or think I do. Then I don’t understand and have to start the video again 😅
FYI these are totally fringe, out there ideas. Not commenting either way, but the field of linguistics wouldn’t recognize the validity of much here
