The Armory.
Established in 1799 by the fledgling United States government, the Harpers Ferry armory was strategically located at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers in present-day West Virginia. Its prime location provided easy access to raw materials and transportation routes, making it an ideal site for military production.
From its inception, the armory played a crucial role in the nation's defense. Initially tasked with repairing firearms and manufacturing small arms components, it quickly expanded its capabilities to include the production of muskets, rifles, cannons, and other military equipment. Under the leadership of skilled artisans and engineers, Harpers Ferry Armory became known for its commitment to quality craftsmanship and technological innovation.
Throughout the 19th century, the Armory witnessed numerous milestones and innovations. One of its most significant contributions came in the form of the Hall Rifle, designed by John Hall and adopted by the U.S. military in the early 19th century. The Hall Rifle introduced revolutionary features such as interchangeable parts and a breech-loading mechanism, setting new standards for firearms design and production.
However, the history of the Harpers Ferry Armory is also marked by periods of turmoil and conflict. During the Civil War, the Armory became a strategic target for both Union and Confederate forces due to its importance in supplying arms to the military. In 1861, it was seized by Confederate troops, leading to its destruction to prevent its use by the enemy.

I just came across your channel a few days ago and I thought you’d be a good person to ask this question, I’ve been thinking about getting a Continental Army uniform and flintlock musket for the past few months, I just don’t know where to get one… do you have any recommendations? The M1903 rifle with the rod bayonet in .30-03 caliber (starting about 7:30) is serial number 1 MADE AT ROCK ISLAND. The story about it being diverted directly to the Rock lsland Arsenal Museum is correct. The story about Model 1903 rifle with later updates (for M1905 knife bayonet and in .30-06 caliber) serial number 1 being found in France and returned to the Springfield Armory Museum is also correct. The confusion arises from BOTH Springfield and Rock Island starting their serial numbers with "1". Great video- glad to see the museum reopened!

after asking you I accidentally came across a statement by Lodgewood I think, they move the number under the barrel. Though, I still don’t get why you’d need one anyway, for a non-firearm classification. Better safe than sorry I guess.

It would be valuable to have measurements of the original stock so we can make the adjustments to our repros. If I may suggest, buy a tailor tape measure (Walmart has them in the sewing section). Then you could take measurements from edge to edge to see what the thickness/girth is exactly of the stock maybe around where the barrel bands go. Plus any other measurement that might be useful. Also, if you want to get the stock darker like the original I did a stock first with aqua fortis and then tannic acid. Left overnight it got nice and dark. But I’d play with scrap wood first. I like your enthusiasm and I’m finding your videos informative! Look forward to new ones this year! Happy new year 🎉

I picked up a Zulu shot gun a while back. I was told it was made in Belgium for France and was a percussion muzzle loading weapon. Then the Prussians handed the French their butts, with needle fire cartridge weapons. The French sent them to South Africa and was converted a Snider system in 12 Gauge. Scary looking things. I shot a blank to function test the thing. But that is as far as I am going with it. I have no idea, and have you ever heard of a Zulu Shotgun?

I don't know about muskets of this vintage, but in the US Civil War, the soldiers were expected to keep their arms "armory bright"-as shiny as they could get them with a rag, and some abrasive like brick dust. When I was reenacting, I kept my rifle in this condition. Some of the other guys never polished their guns, and some of them looked like 150 year old originals, which made no sense to me-we were portraying soldiers carrying arms that would have only been a couple years old, at most. Anyway, once I polished up my Springfield, I would coat the whole rifle with Johnsons paste wax, barrel and all-then buff it up with a shoe brush. Even in a rain, the gun never rusted, and I liked the soft shine the wood had. The wax helped to keep water from getting under the barrel , sealing the stock where it contacted the barrel.

@@d.pierce.6820what a keen eye! Very Interesting because if you look at dead soldiers from the civil war they definitely have brighter barrels and bands. This is a question I actually have not been able to answer in my readings, is the color of the fittings and barrels when they left a French Royal Armory. Id assume bright. I have read NA Brown was applied to Model 1816 Type II’s but discontinued after. So many questions to be answered!

Your work looks fine. I am not a fan of the dull gray on the metal. I thought browning it would make it look better in my eyes, but then you would need to darken the stock. So, I think I would leave it as it is. That was a lot of work and you ended up with a nice piece. P.S., if you decide to buy another Indian musket, look at Military Heritage. Lots to choose from.

Loved the easy-going narration. Very informative and relaxing to watch. I am in Virginia and reenact. I have done a similar thing with my Indian-made Brown Bess. It came out pretty good, but I will need to cut down the bulge on the stock. It's way too big. Always tweaking my gear.

@karlharrelson1091 I appreciate that! New content area for my channel so it’s something for me to learn on. I agree the India Made guns have way too much of knob on the forestock

The Veteran Arms hammer looks off, perhaps you could replace it with a Rifle Shoppe hammer.

The hammer/cock on his original is a replacement from a later french musket like a ‘1777’ style. The cock/hammer on his veteran arms is correct. It is the small screw and washer for the hammer/cock that is incorrect. It should be a larger screw head without a visible washer. Edit: he actually mentions that later on in video.

@@soylentgreen7074 I know the original has a 1774 hammer, but the one on the Veteran Arms 1766 looks off too.

Do you think veteran arms would be a good starter. Im looking to get a flintlock and im liking the price of veteran arms guns, just want to know if it would be worth it as a beginner

I was curious about the price range for Pedersoli muskets and came across a Pedersoli Charleville listed for $2,400 on Midway. Considering that, the Veteran Arms musket is definitely a solid option for a beginner. I’d recommend restaining the stock to tone down the glossy finish it comes with, but overall, these muskets are safe, reliable, and just a bit rough around the edges.
