Kayaking, Venture Investing, and NERF Guns?! | Ty Hagler, Trig - Unlocking Moves Ep. 43
What do Olympic Kayaking, venture investing, and NERF guns have in common?!
Tune in to Unlocking Moves to find out! Unlocking moves is the show that dives into the pivotal moments in a leader's journey that unlocked their true potential! Many leaders only like to talk about their "glory" stories - but host Kurt Wilkin is a firm believer that we learn more from our stumbles and mistakes, our "gory" stories. On this episode, Kurt has a deep conversation with Ty Hagler, a former world-class kayaker turned innovator, designer, and entrepreneur. Ty shares the lessons he learned while his attention was divided between training for the Olympics and trying to break into the industrial design field. I'm a huge believer in learning lessons from our biggest setbacks - Ty embodies that! He had to go all in on athletics to realize that he didn't actually want to keep pushing in that direction. Now, he's a total badass leading Trig - his design consulting firm, and creating space for other designers to thrive with his venture studio. Creativity, iteration, and innovation are huge themes in this episode!
About Ty Hagler - Ty's 20-year journey as a designer, innovator, and entrepreneur has had many surprising twists and turns. His start as a world-class kayaker led to building an in-house innovation department at Home Depot. He started an award-winning design consulting business, Trig, which has been responsible for bringing multiple breakthrough products to market, most recently the Couplet Care bassinet.
About Kurt Wilkin - Kurt is a connector - of dots, ideas, and people. For the past 30 years, he has advised high-growth companies, starting his career with Ernst & Young, and today in his roles as chairman of HireBetter and managing partner of Bee Cave Capital. He's a serial entrepreneur with multiple successful exits and has helped hundreds of entrepreneurs and CEOs build their companies.

    This was such a great chat! I really loved how Mark talked about the importance of having both visionaries and integrators in a business. It's true that visionaries come up with tons of ideas, but without an integrator, those ideas can go nowhere. I was surprised to hear that during tough times like COVID, companies using EOS managed to do even better because they had their plans all set and the right people in place. Also, I liked the idea of seeing hiring someone as an investment, not just an expense. That really flips the thinking! Overall, it’s amazing how much clearer things can get when everyone on the team is focused on what they do best. Thanks for sharing this!

    As a business owner and company that runs on EOS I am the visionary and I think your spot on.

    This video really my eyes to the importance of hiring the right integrator for a company's success. I appreciated the insights into the dynamic between visionaries and integrators. Integrators and visionaries play distinct roles in a company, with integrators focusing on execution and balance, while visionaries drive the big picture and innovation.

    Being a good integrator is more about having the right mindset and fit than having specific industry experience. It's about getting things done and making change happen! The GWC concept (Get it, Want it, Capacity) was enlightening. It's not just about having the skills but also about having the desire and capacity for the role, which makes a lot of sense.

    What do you do when you have a challenge with the Visionary, but have deep respect for the person. And want to build the company and buy, open a location? 😊

    Very good. As being a part of Eos for about 4 years at times acting as an integrator, visionary and owner… the more I listen there seems to be an increasing use of profanity, as such in this interview. Now some may ask, what am I talking about? People with their use of the English vocabulary, I believe all know. So if all of a sudden words that were not appropriate to be used before are now being used, what words do you choose to use as profanity are not acceptable? Again the words being used even in this interview are still not acceptable on TV, so again I believe we all know… I have even heard Gino use the Fbomb? I am not sure why people feel or believe this is professional? I have been in and running business for 33 years and there seems to be more of acceptance of profanity and EOS is having an influence on this… why?

    Basically hire someone else to do what's going on in your crazy head and pay him a minimum wage. The company that I work for its been trying to implement EOS for long time,its not going anywhere because they don't wanna pay someone with those skills,and blame what did not work on the base of the pyramid, as always. Now they want someone with a least 10 years experience. Did we have EOS 10 years ago? To me this is this generation problem,its a motivational group for companies. You guys,Grant cardone and many others, its filling these idiots heads with DO WHAT I SAID, does any of you really have a company? How many employees?I meant a real company with real workers.no just desk job,most of you are just a telemarketing company. Like you said .you are a visionary.

      Thank you for your questions and comments Marcelo. You are right, not every Visionary is ready for an Integrator, or operating partner. And certainly, many Visionaries are unwilling to pay the appropriate level of compensation to attract (and partner with) a great one. We are definitely big believers in the concept of Visionaries "partnering” with their Integrator - and love working with those Visionaries and Integrators who understand and can execute on that concept. Good luck to you on your journey!

    I have a real issue with the framing of this book. I don’t believe it is relevant whether one ‘is’ a visionary and one is an integrator. I for one ‘score’ highly on both. I expect many other do. It is rather about understanding how one has been acting to date, and the responsibilities one has been taking on, rather than effectively delegating. The main point should be, if you actually want to scale, and potentially sell a business you need to leverage other people’s time, and build a business which can run without you. A founder ‘has’ to step back from the day to day, and establish the system underneath them to deliver the vision/mission of the company. That means hiring a number two, or essentially a senior executive, to then build and run the EOS system under them. That is all.

    • @HireBetter
      @HireBetter 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great points James. You are absolutely right, most of us have tendencies of both the visionary and integrator - and a select few ‘score’ highly on both. It is more important that we play to our strengths and identify a partner or ’number 2’ to complement our skills. Thank you for your comment! - Kurt
