Masks Painting
Traditionally, Masks in Odisha are made of Wood and paper mache. In the past, these masks were used by performers who staged plays based on great epics and mythological plays. The wooden masks are usually made of light local wood and then painted with bright colours.
Let's Learn about Paper Mache.
1. Orissa's rich heritage includes the craft of moulding paper into a range of products, including pattachitra-styled masks locally known as Mukha.
2. The skill has been creatively practised by craftsmen all over Odisha particularly in and around Puri.
3. These masks are not only strikingly beautiful but sturdy and durable as well.
4. Paper Mache masks consist of paper pieces or pulp, sometimes reinforced with textiles, bound with an adhesive, such as glue, starch, or wall putty paste.
5. They are painted in handmade colours and Pattachitra style by adding a lot of intricacies and bright colours. Important note - Traditionally the masks after being painted were not given a coat of varnish. But in current times artists use a final coat of varnish or lacquer for additional longevity.
6. Some of the famous paper mache products are masks representing Ramayana, animals and birds like tigers, parrots, owl etc
