Very helpful mate, thank you!
Thanks for watching!
thanks for the info boss
So i was talking to a CD about cropping and she said dont cause when they watch it, your full body will look to small for them to see. Would like to hear your thoughts since this video was 3 years ago im watching
Hi there, quick question, where did you purchase/what brand is that tripod stand for iPhones? If you could provide a link, would be super grateful! Thank you!
Absolutely valuable information. Thanks
Cheers!
Thank you!
What are the camera apps that you have tried and liked? Thanks
I have used ProCam, but there are many apps that feature manual settings which will give you a bit more control of the smartphone camera.
@@MightyTripodActingStudio thank you :)
Thank you! I appreciate this video, just had a question how would we know what temperature light to use like warm, white, cold with different skins tones? Is it just what we would prefer ?
Hello, Reyna. Thanks for your question. Most lights are going to come as daylight balanced (5500K, approx), which will appear "cool." I think it's up to your preference, but if you want flexibility, you should look into LED lighting kits, which usually have a temp range of 3200 - 5600K. I suppose you could try different bulbs in a softbox kit, too. Keep me posted! ~ David
great video
Cheers! ~ David
Thank you Benedict Cumberbatch for taking time out to share with us your knowledge!
Any time! ~ Benny
Great tip!
Very helpful. Thank you 👊🏻
The quality loss from iMovie is horrible! I don't feel comfortable using this method.
THANKS soooooo much!!!! Never knew why my full body shots always were off! So glad I searched…The tutorial at the end is such a blessing!!!
Thank you for taking the time to comment and I am glad it helped. This is why we love creating this kind of content!!! ~ David
Awesome video on Color correction in Videos! Thanks a ton!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching.
Thanks for this tip. I actually knew most of this, and already shoot my self-tapes this way, BUT I did NOT know you could crop a video to portrait mode (or in any other way) on a phone! I usually use Filmora on my laptop for my editing. On my phone I've only ever trimmed for length. So thanks for that awesome bit - it worked perfectly on my Motorola Edge, which is an Android device, so there ya go! :)
Awesome! Break a leg on your next audition!
@@MightyTripodActingStudio Thank you!
Angela DiMarco is smoking hot. She looked good in the movie about the hitman and drug cartel.
True dat. And I am a happy husband. ~ David
I highly recommend the Self-Tape Academy with MTAS. Great information and practice doing what is now the industry standard.
Thank you, Dave! We love teaching and connecting with actors, and we were glad to have you with us. ~ David
Thanks for checking in; you always have pearls of wisdom for us. I'm still thankful for your 'Editing Audition Videos with iMovie on iPhone TUTORIAL,' and I refer back to it often after making my audition tapes. Will you be updating this video for the new iPhone?
Thank you for taking the time to comment, Yvonne. A new iPhone might be in my future this holiday season, so if Santa is feeling generous this year, I will certainly make a new tutorial. Have a great Thanksgiving celebration. ~ David
Thank you! Great tip! Just yesterday I had to do the full body slate and complained (to myself!) how to get it right without all the extras on the side of my backdrop - it's not the first time either! Ended up doing a 3/4 slate (up to my knees)...but now I can use your tip to make it happen!
Thanks, David!
Thanks for this! Very helpful information!
You are most welcome! ~ David
Thanks for posting this. I'm just setting up my self tape studio and it was really helpful. Do you have any thoughts on working with a Samsung Galaxy 10s camera? Or is it better to use my EOS 70D. Freshman at this stuff.
I don't know my way around Samsung, but I recommend using whatever gets you better production value. And, hopefully that does not = more time and hassle! Break a leg, David
I’d like to see a video on breaking down a commercial. Recently had an audition with two opposing wardrobe guidelines. With self taping from home, are people using more props? Thank you for the video! Looking good Mr. Hogan. 😀
I like to us props if I feel that they add to the quality of the story/audition. They can also be added for comic effect. Unless they explicitly say NO PROPS, of course. Great to see you, Carol!
Thanks David! Great tips!
You can just turn your dslr 90 degrees too
VERY HELPFUL!!! Thanks David & Angela
Thank you for this video it was so helpful! You have made acting so much better for me and I just started a channel about it!
In iMovie, if you have to use the vertical: after you do the cropping out of the extra headroom in photos, screenshot and crop a square of the background (in this case, the blue), and then you can drag the video above it, so the big black bars around it will be removed and replaced with your background color. Makes it blend much more seamlessly.
That’s, exactly, what I was going to suggest!
Definitely will try this! Thanks!
I think I need to see a tutorial to this background tip
Thank you! This was helpful :)
Thank you for watching and for your comment! ~ David
I have a light blue backdrop. Is that ok? Does it matter of what shade of blue it is to audition?
I think light blue will work great! ~ David
@@MightyTripodActingStudio thanks!
Was that a lavalier mic you used? Would you recommend one? Or do you think that having the script reader's audio captured on the iPhone and the auditioner's audio captured on one of those would be distracting?
Hello! I don't think I am using lavaliere here, but I have used the Movo LV-1. I think that Lav mics are good for some self-tapes, especially when the speaking volume of the character is low. Typically, the internal mic of the iPhone is good enough for self-tapes, as the device is usually close to the subject (you) during the taping. Thank you for your question and break a leg on your next audition. ~ David
Saved my life!!! Now I can do my full body slate without guilt
Awesome!
too bloody complicated
Do your thing, Dan! We just like to present options. ~ David
That is so helpful, thank you very much!
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent! Thank you!
Happy to help!
That intro! 😂
🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for the video! I've been doing a lot of self tape auditions lately, and I've finally come to my sense to purchase equipment. I found a site that offers a grid for a few extra dollars. Is that beneficial for self tape auditions, or is that really only a part of the photography world? Thanks!!
Hello, Matthew. I have never used grids for lighting elements outside of photography, but they could be useful to decrease the intensity of a light source, if needed.
...Now, when someone is alone to self tape; we have to use selfie mode to Lock right? Waiting for soft boxes to arrive. My lighting on my last few self tape has not been good. Great tips on here. Thanks
Hello, Claude. Yes, you have to use the front facing camera when taping alone to toggle AE/AF Lock. Depending the smartphone you are using, the front facing camera may not be quite as good as the rear facing camera, but in my experience the quality difference is not really discernible. Thanks for watching, and break a leg on your next tape!
@@MightyTripodActingStudio Than you sir, I have an iphone 7 so I stopped using selfie mode since my quality of self tapes were not great. If only I new about the lock feature. Waiting for the 12 to arrive and with the new Soft boxes also coming in; PLUS your tips, I should be all set!
Genuinely helpful. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks so much! I’m doing an audition that wants my songs recording my full body... any tips for recording in horizontal mode in a small space?
You'll have much more trouble getting a head to toe video in a small space with the camera in a horizontal/landscape orientation. A wide angle lens would be needed for that kind of thing, which might be an add-on of minimal expense if it was for a smartphone. Best of luck! ~ David
To make this work right, you'd need the 18" ring light and not have the light shine directly on an individual who is self taping as well as getting separate tripod to mount my iPhone XS Max. Correct?
Hello, Samantha. You would need a separate tripod and mount for your iPhone if you wanted to move the lighting unit off center, yes.
this is great!! super helpful! what is your opinion on using BOTH soft box (or umbrella lights) and the ring light for selftapes? :)
Hello! I will use whatever works best. I think that when using multiple lights, you have more creative control - you can light the subject and the backdrop, etc. I hope your setup is rocking and your auditions are stellar! - David
Thank you so much
You're most welcome
Hi, thanks for this video. Cropping a slate on iPhone worked for me but then the final audio of the cropped vid was out of sync when it got exported from iMovie as a final project. Tried it again with the uncropped vid and the audio synced up fine. Any ideas?
I am hearing about sync issues when exporting videos filmed and edited on iPhones. My editor pals thing it has something to do with the tech of the devices filming with a variable frame rate. There appear to be a few workarounds: 1. trying filming with a manual camera app like FilmicPro or ProCam8. 2. Compress your exported video with Handbrake. I have no idea why a cropped video would affect the recorded audio. It's all a bit frustrating... Keep me posted. ~ David
Please post the link for the lighting? Thanks :)

@@MightyTripodActingStudio I have one question, how do I place the correct order of my three video clips? Somehow they are always loaded out of order.
@@Kellytalk Once loaded into iMovie, you should be able to touch/hold the clip, then move to a different position.
