Which type garlic do you plant, would soft neck work? I’m in central nj
Hi! I think the hard neck grows best in our climate. I plant German white porcelain hardneck. Big bulbs! I’ve planted supermarket (organic) but didn’t produce very large bulbs.
Enjoyed seeing this garden. Her garden has “rooms “that were interesting and unique in their own way. I loved seeing a pot looking like a bench with three small pots on the seat. My mother had a plant that had grown quite large in the front of the home and now I know it was a spotted laurel. Amazing that in this small garden , she has made a haven for wildlife with nesting boxes. It is an inspiration to us all to think about wildlife in our own gardens. Thank you !
Yes she and her husband have done a beautiful job and it is such a wildlife haven. It really is inspirational.
I used to live in Oxfordshire and know Thame pretty well, next time you come to the UK you should visit some of the great gardens of Cornwall, absolutely stunning!
What a small world! Yes, I’d love to see them!
You were so lucky to be able to visit there, especially with special friends. The English people take a special pride in their gardens, both large and small, and their beauty shows it. Thanks for sharing this.
Yes, I was very lucky and I'm so glad you liked the video! I was so impressed by the English gardens and have been really inspired!
Very helpful! Thk u 😊
Thanks, and thank you for watching!
We found a bunny nest in our front yard! What a wonderful science lesson for my 11yo. He's been checking on them, making sure mama has visited. We're doing all the things mentioned here already, so this is great confirmation that we're taking care of them just by keeping an eye out! Thanks!
Nice! And yes, what a nice science lesson!
nice
What a lovely little backyard oasis!
It really is!
WOW - lucky you! Being in London sounds wonderful, especially since you have a special friend there. Karen's wildlife garden is very nice. So fun to learn about the hedgehogs who live there. I'll have to check Phillip T out and see what all he's up to.
Yes! I was very lucky to have Karen want me to visit and have such a nice time! Those hedgehogs - including Phil were adorable. Yes, please check him out! He’s very funny!
The car idea is ingenious!
Thank you!
Loved the cat!!!
Thank you! She always seems to know when the camera’s on!
What a wonderful Market and nursery!
Thanks! It’s great!
It's OK to be lazy - I tell myself that frequently. With all of the damage you've had, it looks like you might have more than one groundhog, or a very fat and healthy one. It is sad that your garden didn't succeed like you hoped. You did a lot of work in it this year. I've never seen any Monarchs here even though I have the butterfly weed planted. In looking at my weather diary, we haven't had any rain here since last month, and it looks like we'll stay dry through the first part of Nov. We did have a few nights in the low 30s, so I did some prep then for freezing, but now we're having days in the mid to high 70s and a few listed in the low 80s. Do I clean things up or just keep them watered and let the bees enjoy the flowers. The annual flowers I cut back are showing new leaves. It's definitely a weird growing season this year. I did go ahead and harvest my sweet potatoes and have them in the garage to start their curing. Hopefully you'll still be able to harvest some of yours. Each year is a learning year in one way or another - what to do and also what not to do.
Well, I’ve never seen any other groundhogs except Fatty, and he is very fat! I have 2 rabbits, mice and squirrels too so it’s not all him. The lack of monarchs makes me sad. I hope they come back! The lack of rain has made some gorgeous days but I’m concerned we’ll be in a major drought soon. Being lazy lately has kept me keep things in perspective and also has helped mend my back! Well, there’s always next year.
@@theladysgardenandhome FYI - Jane's Growing Garden recently has a fun Halloween video about garden horrors. Gardener Scott is in it. Think you'll enjoy it, especially with your groundhog horror.
Where was the farmers market ?
1283 Weaver St in New Ro, near the Scarsdale border.
Oh my, what a wonderful place to spend several hours. You are so lucky to have it near you. The produce prices look good, too. I could happily get lost in there enjoying all of the Autumn etc goodies. Your mom's new friend is a cutie and her garden is lovely. Thanks for sharing all of that with us! Hopefully Lisa's home survived Milton! OK - Sammy the scarecrow.
Yes, it's a wonderful place and I love taking mom there. I'll let her know you like her new friend and garden. Lisa and her daughter's family made it through, thank you. It was a frightening night for sure. "Sammy"...I'll let mom know your suggestion, thank you!
@@theladysgardenandhome I just came back on here to read your reply and wanted to watch your tour again. You mentioned the missing button on 'Sammy's' outfit. It looked like it was missing while in the cart as your were getting apples. It's a scarecrow, so any button will work to replalce it, put a oversized safety pin there, or just let it stay gone.
Hi, thanks for confirming the button was already gobe, we didn't find it in the trunk. My area did not have damage from Milton, but close by and many areas around the state sure did.
Good Tips! I'd only seen those large heavy hoops, so the ones you're using look like something I could handle. This is the first year I'm actually trying to grow something in the fall/winter. I'm now listed in Zone 7a instead of the 6b/7a 'border'. When I was at Lowe's getting mums the other day, I saw they still had a few veggies out and bought some Romaine Lettuce and Broccoli, so will see how they do. I'm betting I'll eat the lettuce before the end of next month. The Collard Greens I'd planted some time ago still look good so hopefully that'll make it as well. Now that it's cooler, below 80, my Cherry Tomatoes have exploded and I'm harvesting at least a good size handful every day. I'll dig my Sweet Potatoes up next weekend. How are yours doing? Since I'm in the last area of Hurricane Helene's cone, which is the heavy rain and flooding area, I'll have to see how my garden survives this weekend. Hehe - did your 'magic wand' get rid of the squirrel?
Oh, stay safe! Helene looks like a monster! So glad you’re growing some fall veggies! I hope this was helpful. No idea if my sweet potatoes made it through the constant nibbling of their leaves grime the ground hog but will see in a few weeks. I’m finally getting in some blushing up slicers and had my first for dinner tonight. Yum! Enjoy yours :)
And no, the magic wand didn’t work :(
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
My word, you have a huge variety in your garden. You must have been 'shopping' in it for your dinners all summer. You'll have more to harvest soon. Thanks for giving us the tour. Hehe - you also have a small critter colony there as well.
Thanks, Nana! The neighborhood critters know where to come for dinner and lunch. and breakfast, and mid-day snacks, and the midnight munchies!
Two years ago, I had a very nasty experience with yellow jackets who made a nest in my garden. All I had to do was walk by and they'd attack me. Even the man who mowed my yard got attacked when he tried to mow near there. In Walmart's garden center I found a Trap-N-Kill trap for yellow jackets, wasps & hornets. It's by Enoz. It definitely took care of my yellow jacket problem. Sorry I forgot to tell you about this earlier.
Thanks, so much for the info, Nana. I'm going to get it and I'll let you know how it works! They're so obnoxious. Yesterday one followed me around while I watered, and he was NOT nice!
Glad the days are getting milder and you can enjoy your gorgeous garden. I am amazed at your agricultural accomplishments, and know our ancestors do, too!!! 💚🌱
Aww, thank you, Lisa!
Your 🌽🌽🌽 is as high as an elephant's eye🌱💚
And it looks like it's climbin' clear up to the sky....oh what a beautiful morning!
So cute how Layla came in camera range when you were talking about vodka in your tincture 😂
😂😂 She may have a problem!
@@theladysgardenandhome she said "Don't forget to grow more catnip!"
Thank You!
Thanks for watching!
I've never made a tincture before. Thanks for showing me how to do it. I'm gathering from the expression on your face that the ones you took didn't taste very good. (Hehe - maybe mix it with OJ or V-8 juice?) I've just let my herb tea seep for several hours instead of 20 minutes or so and called that good enough. Wisdom from 'days gone by' used to be the best there was, mainly because they worked. Personally, I think we need more 'days gone by' remedies.
I do too! And yes, it tastes terrible. Maybe a “spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down?” I’ll try juice. That sounds good. Maybe it’ll be like a cocktail.
It looks like you'll have a lot to harvest. Your corn stalks look great! Good for you! We're still in the 90s with humidity in the 80+%. The famous 'They' keep promising rain and a cool down. I keep hoping. I'm planning on sowing Kale seeds next week and hopefully will get a nice crop of it this fall. Our fall is supposed to be a warm one so not sure how long of a season I'll have this year but think it'll be longer than the 'normal' one. Love my cherry tomatoes! I put more in the freezer today. It looks like my Sweet Potatoes will also be a bumper crop this year. I cut some of their leaves to use instead of spinach today - YUM! Right now, gardening in one day at a time.
Oof... that's a lot of heat and humidity! I hope you get a cool down soon! I love how versatile cherry tomatoes are. Most don't make it into the house though because they're such fun garden snacks. I'll be lucky if any of my sweet potatoes grow. My groundhog has consistently eaten all the leaves since I planted them. They keep growing new ones though, so maybe it'll be okay. I really hope so because I have a lot of pressure from my mom!
@@theladysgardenandhome Are you growing your sweet potatoes in the ground or in a container? It seems they are easier to grow and especially harvest when grown in a container because you just dump it upside down on a tarp or something and go through the soil instead of digging in the ground for them. A container will also keep the groundhog away. We are 'only' 83 degrees today, however the humidity is much higher than that. But we did get some rain last night so that helps.
@@tennesseenana4838 I have them in grow bags. He can get to the leaves because they spill over :-( I agree, though I find it's very easy to grow potatoes and sweet potatoes in containers.
Very Very nice
Thank you!
I didn’t know that about cucumbers, that happened to some of my plants. It’s amazing how much you can grow in a relatively small space !
Thanks, and I'm glad it was helpful to you! Yes, I sure do cram things in!
So interesting and informative! Makes me more motivated to get herbs of all kinds in my garden. Thanks, sis, and hugs to you and Lady!!
Oh thanks, sis and I'm so glad this gives you motivation to grow herbs! Yay! Lady and I hug you back!
Love this video!! Lady is so precious!!
Thank you and Lady appreciates your nice compliment!
@@theladysgardenandhome a beautiful soul!!
And you got me wanting to try feverfew!!
Thank you for sharing this information! Also, a lot of the plants we call 'WEEDS' are beneficial to us in many ways and are yummy as foods. Plantain and Stinging Nettles are the ones that I usually think about first. Plantain used to be called the soldier's plant because it helped stopped the bleeding from battle wounds. It was also used by doctors in Europe during WWI and WWII. Stinging Nettles makes a really yummy tea and also a soup, especially when mixed with onions, potatoes and carrots. Thankfully my mints and several herbs have enjoyed our hot weather and have exploded in my garden. Yes, they have a lot of nutritional benefits. I'll mix and match several of them and make iced teas and drink them all day during the summer. I'll dry them for hot teas in the winter. In the past, the people didn't have a pharmacy on every corner, so they went to nature for their healing needs. Unfortunately, we've lost a lot of that knowledge and just take a pill of some sort with a long list of side effects. Everything we really need for our wellbeing is here with us - we just have to look for it and be willing to learn.
Oh, I love that history about the stinging nettle! Glad so many of your herbs and mint are doing well, and I love mixing and matching too. There are so many wonderful, helpful plants God has given us! Great alternatives to a pill for sure.
Thank you for a wonderful comprehensive video on medicinal herbs and medical disclosure!! I always check first! Chamomile, lavender, sage, spearmint, lemon grass, rosemary, calendula, ginger, tons of lily of the valley and oregano! These are all in my garden!
Thanks for watching, my neighbor! So cool we're growing so much of the same! I need to get out and harvest so I have some through the winter, too!
Thank you so much for the great tips ! I just tried an herb garden for the first time this year. I had no idea how to harvest or when or preserve them 🤷♀️ 😅
Thank you and I hope this helps! Good luck with your herbs!
Hi Cheryl, is this yr correct name? This is my 3td video of yrs I had 2 watch 2 c if you've done the same as me. So sorry about all yr furbabies but even more yr child. I can't even imagine. I have no children. One very early miscarriage but I wasn't even sure. We too have all our pets buried on our property. Under a century old Pine tree up on a bank over looking a brook that runs through our property but with my last and most precious cat I didn't want her farther away from my gardens because she hung out with me all the time. She wld come 2 see me and then go off and do her thing so I wanted 2 visit her and talk 2 her more and had my husband dig a hole 2 the side of a path way in one of her fav areas. I took found a cat with wings. And have placed heart shape rocks I find when beach combing around the statue! I love that lady one reading a book 2 the child!
Thank you so much for your kind words. It was difficult for sure, as so many women like you and me know. The spot that you have for your pets sounds beautiful, but I really love your spot for your beloved cat. I LOVE the idea of the heart shaped rocks found at the beach. I'm going to look for some next time I'm there. Oh, and yes, I'm Cheryl!
Love that you have so many herbs in yr deck! I have 2 go down a flight of stairs 2 get 2 my herbs. I do the same thing with straw and freezer bags 4 my dried herbs or whatever I freeze. Love yr csr. P.S. My very 1st comments on yr channel. Just fnd u 2day. Itt was yr lemon ginger in honey video. This is my 3rd one 2 watch. Where in US r u located?
Hi! Thank you so much for your comments! The herbs on the deck are convenient, for sure. I'm in Stamford, CT. (Zone 7B)
Congrats again on your 1000 Subs! Your garden is looking good - much better than mine. However, this morning I harvested my first Okra! We're starting another heat wave with temps in the mid 90s and humidity in the mid to high 80s. This is supposed to last for at least another 10 days. I did enjoy our temps when they were in the mid 80s for those few days. I'll start some seeds in a week or so for my fall garden. Hopefully it'll be cooler then. My first frost date is the end of October, so I have plenty of time for cool season crops.
Thank you, TNNana! Oof, that's a lot of humidity! Be careful when you're out that you don't get overheated. That's not good. Enjoy the okra!
Way to go girl! Your garden looks great!
Thanks, Kristy! So good to see you here! Thanks for watching :-)
Excellent presentation! Thank you!
Thank you for watching!
Merci
You’re welcome!
Thank you for this info! I have some holes in my garden I can fill with bush beans and flowers 🌸
Oh, that's great! I hope they grow great for you!
I went through my seed packets last week to see what I wanted to plant for the fall. Hopefully it'll be cooler then. Since we're still in the 90s+ heat dome situation, it's a question of what I want to try to grow that I'll really use. Even the poor hummingbirds are starting to look for cooler places. Thankfully my mints and most of my herbs are surviving, and I have basil galore. My cherry tomatoes are starting to flower so all of these things are good. From the looks of the vines, I'll also have a good sweet potato crop. Yes, peas, lettuce etc are gone but I did get to harvest some peas last month and I cut a few of them up in my salad. Your garden is looking good and I'm hoping it's cooler there. Enjoy!
Oh I hope it gets cooler soon for you! In the last few days, the heat broke here (thankfully!) Your poor hummingbirds! It's been very dry here with your random, infrequent quick thunderstorms. I wish you luck in your summer veggies now that the cool ones are gone. The groundhog ate all my sweet potato vines so I hope they'll still be okay. Good luck and stay cool!
Great information! You'll have to do another video when you harvest. I'm growing corn for the first time this year. Its a variety also from Botanical Interests, "Buttergold". Im in northern CT. This one is only 63 days! P.S. I like the music😂
Thanks, Jeanette! Yes I’ll do that! And you have to let me know what you think of Buttergold. Thanks for liking the Mr. Roger’s/Snoopy music!
I'm a new subscriber and watch some of your video's...love them...they are very helpful. So thank you!!! Greetings from the Netherlands 🎉
Thank you so much and I’m so glad you find them helpful! Greetings from the USA!
I can’t handle the music. Great video though!!
Thanks! Sorry you don’t like the Snoopy/Mr. Roger’s music. 😂
While the colflower grows must cut off the lower leaves for the nutrients to go to the flower and not to the old leaves.
Great tip, thanks!
Wow that was the right tool to make a daunting task doable! How did you prepare the cauliflower?
Indeed it is! I steamed this with broccoli then topped with some melty cheese. Yum!
Very interesting information! Hopefully you have a good harvest. You really have a variety of things growing in your garden. I've never grown corn. Last year my daughter bought corn from a local farmer, and we worked together to can it. Will probably do the same this year.
Sometimes I think I have too much variety, but I do enjoy trying new things. One day I'll learn to can!
I love Our Stony Acres! I took some of the courses! Your garden is blooming so nicely! I have to cover everything also! I do it with mesh baskets, cloches from the $1.25 store and sometimes insect covering! You have them protected very well! Take care!
I did too, in fact it was Rick that inspired me to try winter gardening and I've done it ever since. You take care, too neighbor and happy gardening! Would love to visit your garden one day!
I’m north of you- zone 6b- I just started corn May17 for the first time, so far so good!
Oh I hope you have success!
I just ran over a nest with my mower I was devastated. 2 got injured. One I think is missing a leg but he ran in its nest with the others so I'll have to check on him later. The other one ran further away from the nest. I thought he was missing a leg too. I went back to him to put him back to its nest with the others and found out he was ok, no missing legs thank God, just his ears got nipped a little. There's 6 in total. Praying that they'll be ok
Oh how traumatic! You’re doing such a good job looking after them. I hope they’re okay!
@@theladysgardenandhome last night I checked the one that was away from the nest. No missing limbs but ears are a little nick but he's ok. I put him back to his nest. All 6 babies are still in their nest when I checked this morning. Still will have to check the other one but they all look ok. It was traumatic for us and thank you. Gotta make sure they're ok since its my fault for not checking in the first place.
