Compunction. A Musical Reflection on Life, Struggle, and Purpose.
Compunction has the honour of being my final composition. While it may have been more fitting to approach this milestone with a dramatic and bombastic work, I have instead reflected on the choices I have made, the uncertainty, struggle, and sense of isolation that the composer life entails, and written a piece that explores my truth, as uncomfortable as it may be. If you happen upon this work and are inclined to give it a listen, it’s my hope that it provides solace and comfort in some way or fashion, as you navigate your own journey through this unpredictable thing called life.

Cubase and Finale Workflow for Large Orchestral Piece by David Carovillano
Music makes no sense, video makes no sense in relation to music, I am emotional indeed.
Superb performance and fantastic composition. Just a pity that the other instruments were prerecorded. I would love to see (hear) the entire ensemble live!
So glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for your kind words, @joswylin7787 We did get to play it with a live ensemble once, but to be honest, we really do enjoy integrating our performances with midi and being in complete control of the entire production. The downside is that it is a lot more challenging/time consuming doing this as compared to rehearsing with live musicians.
Thank you so much for this tutorial/insight into your workflow! Very impressed!
Thanks for checking it out! I appreciate your kind words.
Amazing composition and so skillfully preformed
Hi Dave, You certainly managed to create a spooky and daunting atmosphere, mainly supported by the cello and the bass clarinet. A most fascinating piece and somewhat unusual for your "philosophical" mind. I really like it and it must be a real challenge and pleasure to perform it with a live orchestra. In this version, there is definitely some extensive mixing work to be done, but it does sound very promising as it is now! I hope to hear the final version soon! Jos
@@Moved-By-Music Yes, you're right about that. Having your work performed live is hardly possible these days. A couple of months ago, I wrote a Hymn for my town in 2 versions: one for symphony orchestra and one for concert band. The last one was performed in January and tomorrow (June 1) it will be performed again by the National Military Guides Band. They are all selected professional players (90 in total). I'm looking forward to hearing it. I hope there will be some recording...
Great performance and wonderful piece!
Thank you for composing your After It’s Over Piano Trio and for treating the invasion of Ukraine with such compassion. I am of Ukrainian background and regularly in contact with relatives in Ukraine. It is uncanny how your sensitive and wonderfully crafted composition captures the essence of current life in Ukraine. The joy, innocence, and normalcy of daily existence have been shattered. The strings and piano of your trio perfectly capture the tension between the aspiration to light and life and daily life-threatening violence and darkness. Your beautiful soaring tunes and rhythmically dense textures create a beautiful, expressive and compelling composition. The visual imagery only compounds the power of your work.
Fantastic composition and performance, showing your view on the 'Ukrainian disaster'. I'm as well profoundly touched by this 21st century drama, even so that it prevents me from composing. In my mind I'm kind of possessed with the unreal evil and brutality that a highly cultivated people must suffer, solely because they chose the path of democracy and thus were a threat to the Russian Federation... Luckily some artistic souls like yourself took the courage to write an aesthetic answer to such unjust aggression. Thank you in the name of all who suffer and have to deal with terrible losses of father, husband, child...
Very interesting but I can't help thinking that if you composed in Dorico in the first place with proper Expression Maps (not that hard to programme yourself though everything's admittedly easier if using Synchron rather than VI), you could save a lot of time. After all, dynamics and CC data can all be set in the Key Editor in much the same was as in Cubase. There are certainly some things which Cubase is useful for such as the tempo track, as you've pointed out and multi-track logical editing operations can often be more efficient in Cubase as well. But if you want to stay with Finale, perhaps there's no better way to do it and you do generally get nice results --I don't know it well enough. MIR is certainly impressive but you need a pretty powerful system to set reverb etc on every channel -- I've trialled MIR and my system can't cope.
@@Moved-By-Music I must admit I couldn't start with sounds of the quality of Garritan (or the equally unusable Sibelius and Dorico "free" libraries) because the process of composing itself has now become linked to the sound produced which needs to be tested as I go along. But you obviously enjoy what you do (and produce thoughtful and thought-provoking) music so who am I to argue!
Many thanks! Splendid video!
@@Moved-By-Music Looking forward to it!
Dave, I have no words to describe my feelings while listening and watching these striking images. How wonderfully you've captured the very essence of your music in expressive and moving visual sequences. You've displayed another talent of yours: cinematic/musical expression on a deep text. Sincere congrats!!!
Great show! Congrats for both the (visual) performance and the music. It's really the kind of music to experience and not so much to only listen to.
THAT was a daunting TREK - not a walk-through. Thank you for confirming that we ALL have a lot to learn regarding CUBASE.
@@Moved-By-Music WOW that is somewhat disconcerting! :)
A thing of beauty . . .
Omg! Thankyou so much!
Why doesn’t Finale form multirests in the extracted parts? I notice that the Trombone part begins with nine separate measures rest.
very fine put together dude! I've wrote you a PM onVI Control. Greetings from Wolf! PS: what is your main Instrument btw...?
@@Moved-By-Music oh how beautiful! wished I could play that, too. one day I'd like to play the imperial march from john williams on the accordeon. are there videos from you and your wife in the duet?
@@Moved-By-Music thanks a lot for the lonk, listened and subbed. clarinet + accordeon is really a good combination!
Really great! I've heard and admired your work through a couple of the forums. This insight into your process is a nice blend of the creative and technical aspects of composing, all rooted in musicianship. Would love to see more about how you shape parts with midi CC and velocity.
GREAT ! THANKS so much for taking the time. Best video I've seen covering all the bases from notation to DAW, to libs used, all in one ! Makes for a very cohesive understanding of your work flow. One question: just for quick checks have you used any libraries for playback directly from Finale, and if so, what ? They have gotten SO much better these days... Thanks again Dave for the generosity with your time !
Absolutely fantastic Dave, thanks so much for sharing this!
