Companies didn't want unions in their manufacturing plants because it gave too much power to employees insisting on better pay raises, health insurance, job safety, illegal hiring and firing practices. Skills in manufacturing? There's no college course you can take to learn manufacturing skills. There's no high school classes teaching manufacturing skills. So the problem of a shortage of skills in manufacturing is BS. Their problem is high turnover. They can't keep employees because they create toxic work environments. Management does not respect labor. People who have engineering degrees have college debt and aren't expecting to paid minimum wage, only to be fired after 3 years because hiring someone new at cheaper pay wage helps pad their management's income and owners pocket. Nothing's changed in manufacturing so the demise is really the business owners fault and not the employees.

Developing world can learn from developed countries when it comes to salaries in supply chain, especially for those whose job doesn’t involve working from an air conditioned office. They are given a typical blue collar treatment. The guest speaker is absolutely right. She even gave the example of truck drivers who are handsomely paid while the contrary is true in the other spectrum.

The short sighted knee jerk reactions of industry and government at the time rushing to duplicate manufacturing globally inevitably lead to a glut. Several old timers in rhe chip business in particular warned against overreacting.

My opinion in this matter is that companies should bare the costs of return in the supply chain. Why would a customer pay to have a article returned to the company? It perhaps would do I it but then it could never buy from that brand.

Where in the world will "New" employees (for DCs and warehouses in general) be recruited from? The high school system has done exactly what the corporate world wants, churn out simple thinkers that fill labor intense warehouse positions. Many of the warehouse workers are unskilled, some who hang around longer and pay attention, are semi-skilled / skilled. Compensation is not the only answer. Many of the X-Y-and Z generations are not cut out for such work. Truth is, many of the warehouse workers are whiners, who think they are under-paid, yet bring nothing to the table to start with, and will jump ship for a $2. raise without comparing the benefits first. It is not the business of the firm to ensure a worker can live can an overindulgent lifestyle. A worker tells you he/she can't afford a pair of safety boots, yet they have several pairs of overpriced Nikes. And that is not an isolated example. Interesting to note, everybody wants a raise, yet their arguments are flawed, They argue about cost of living only, instead of combing it with productivity, skill set enhancement. First rule of thumb is to follow the rules., regulations and guidelines. Many of the unskilled workforce are not interested in "Engagement" they just want cash in pocket.

He was wrong at the beginning about people not wanting 2 day shipping on some items and prefer white glove service by the time somebody decides to get a new mattress, they want it now Majority of people don’t want to interact with other people and rather it be just dropped off as soon as possible.

I’ve had both Walmart plus and I have instacart and the cost of everything is so much more with instacart but easier to get delivery where Walmart is harder to get slots for delivery or pickup

I started using Walmart grocery pickup during the pandemic. I still use it. I’ve never liked crowds and this has helped me.
