The Weidenthal Family Farm received 91 chickens with a mix of American Bresse from North Star Farm and Henry Knoll New Hampshires from Freedom Ranger Hatchery. Upon arrival, Weedy discusses the intent and plans for keeping dual purpose chickens on the farm.

    Plastic in the sun?

    I like so much the idea of the dome. Have you manufactured and cut the irons of the structure or have you bought it ready only for assembly?

      Promise Domes cuts the frame pieces from EMT conduit. They press and stamp them for receiving the bolts

    Did you ever do a follow up to this? Curious how the knoll line of New Hampshires did compares to the Bresse. Would love to hear from you if you have the growth info. Feed input. Anything.

      @@bedgoodheritagefarm3902 This is Weedy responding… I never got comfortable in front of the camera and all my videos were 20-30 minutes long and I was still feeling like my explanations were insufficient so I didn’t do any follow ups. We do have some growth data though. The NH grew significantly faster. At 14 weeks, cockerels dressed out with an average 6.5 lb weight. For the Bresse they averaged about 4 lbs. The Bresse were more aggressive and the NH were very lazy… almost like commercial meat hybrids. The NH put on a slightly higher percentage of breast meat while the Bresse put on a high percentage of leg meat. The Bresse had a dainty skeleton that resulted in a higher yield of meat on each carcass and thin skin that crisped well. The NH had thick bones and a heavier fat layer which resulted in rich pan sauces and great stock. I liked both and wanted to experiment with crosses but we had an unfortunate coyote attack shortly after they reached laying age. We lost 30 chickens in 2 nights and didn’t get to breed any. At the time of the attack, the Bresse were laying 5-6 eggs per day per pullet and the NH were laying 4-5 per day per pullet. For a dual purpose flock, I’d like to keep born again in the future, but next season we’ll be focusing mostly on strictly meat chickens and strictly egg layers rather than trying to do dual purpose development… we’re just too busy to do it well at the moment

    Wow you have eyes! This is really interesting. I have a couple questions, where did you source the shrink plastic on the top from? Also what is the weight lbs/square foot of the exterior vs the interior foam? Thanks and I hope you have luck with the wind. i watched Weedys interview about farming. You guys are cool. Thanks for sharing.

      Glad you’ve been enjoying it! The shrink wrap is a common construction material for marine use. It comes in rolls of 150’ and they’re 40’ wide. Kyle shops around but one of the places that carries it is U-Line. The exterior foam is a 2.8 lb foam and the interior foam is a 2.2 lb foam. The lighter foam is a better sound barrier but the heavy foam is stronger and has a higher R value

    Whats the foam made of?

      Foam!

    • @RaisedinCochiseWeidentha-kp1ys
      @RaisedinCochiseWeidentha-kp1ys 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for the question! The exterior foam is a roofing grade insulation foam. It’s a closed cell polyurethane. The interior foam is made of the same stuff but it’s lighter weight but is better at controlling sound.

      Foam I think.

  • @fuocofuegofire
    @fuocofuegofire 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

    This must be the cheapest per volume insulated construction around. Can't wait to see how this develops. Thanks for sharing. How thick will the foam end up being? Any estimated R value?

    • @RaisedinCochiseWeidentha-kp1ys
      @RaisedinCochiseWeidentha-kp1ys 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The foam is applied about 5 inches thick. The R value will be around 35, but it’s actually about 50% more effective than fiberglass insulation which is designed to allow for some breath ability. Real world performance for these houses has shown them to be more like the equivalent of R-50.
