What about healthcare? That is the BIGGEST issue that keep people working. Can you explain your healthcare situation. That would help a lot of people, especially single folks. Thanks.

If I had used COBRA or ACA/Obama Care it would have cost about $10K a year, so I decided to go without insurance and I would have 10K to use if anything happened, yes I know it's risky. After the first year I can use ACA and because of my lower income I would be subsidised and it would be much more affordable.

When I was 56 I decided to take a year off then work again until 65, Well after a few months I knew I did not want to go back to work (which was a surprise to me as I thought I liked working). Living in Hawaii my expenses are a lot higher than most places but I found I spent much less than I anticipated. In any case it has been 7 years now and Ive never been happier. One thing you might look at is taking withdrawals from you 401K and putting them in a Roth (you must have some income to do this) or even in a regular brokerage account to take advantage of your low tax bracket. It important to work the numbers as one key is paying little to no tax on what you have. Good luck and have fun!

If you will work part time why do you need 10-13 more years? You could take SS earlier, maybe not immediately at 62 but push it a bit - as much as possible... TH-cam can be a nice side hustle :). Keep going, you're doing well! p.s. that 1K a mo in car loan just breaks my heart, but each of us have their own things that make us happy :) (hubby would prob do the same)

Nothing is set in stone for me, I'm taking this journey 1 day at a time. I appreciate your sentiment, don't let the car payment bother you, I know if I wanted to, I could sell it, pay it off and still have enough to buy a used car. Thanks for the comment.

I didn't see a mortgage or rent payment in that budget, so it seems like your house might be paid off ? ...another possible option (to avoid having to work) is some sort of house hack such as taking on a roommate(s), or even renting entire house and moving into a comfortable apartment. It's possible that apartment rent is significantly less than what you can rent your house for. Great video !

Solid video Chris. As a guy that does personal financial coaching and retired at 56 myself, I’d focus on driving down expenses and working a part-time gig that lights your fire. Focus #1 - get that depreciating asset of a car paid off as that’s your meal ticket to freedom. I refuse to go back to the corporate jungle. I love seeing people set free from debt so that they can be all they are wired to be. Congrats on early retirement. There ain’t nothing quite like it!

Love this! You are so right! I just retired at 56 at the end of May. There is nothing I own in that is more valuable than my freedom. I live near the woods and don't have a fenced backyard, so I've had a variety of critters help themselves to my garden - mostly groundhogs, rabbits, squirrels and deer. I've never had a ripe blueberry yet - the birds get them first. Groundhogs got my kale and beans and several cucumber plants a few weeks ago. Squirrels and birds have taken nearly all my strawberries. I don't want to make my garden into a fortress, so I figure I'm going to lose stuff and that's OK. Yesterday I saw a beautiful fox surveying my garden (he probably realized how many critters come visit it!) and that made me very happy!

I hear you, I never had 42k to invest in my 30's and 40's, and in my 20's, forget it, I was in debt. I payed the electric bill when they threatened to turn it off. The only thing that changed when I turned 50 was my attitude. I always spent most all the money I made every year before that. I have worked the same job for 20 years, the first 14 I saved 3 to 4k a year and had 70k. When I turned 50 I decided I needed to save and invest so I could retire before I died. @@curtislake333 Long story on the toxic job environment I’m in. I will tell you that once you become a member of the TH-cam partner program, it is a great source of passive income. Although I have dipped big time in the algorithm, I do still receive a monthly income from Google Adsense. I have a few more things to do and I will hopefully be back to making videos this week! I can’t wait to be able to make that video that says “I quit my job,” that alone is motivating for me! Glad to see you making videos, they are motivating!

Just one more thing, the frog analogy has been proven to be false. The frog will jump out once it gets hot enough lol

Thanks for that info, but I think it's still a good analogy for how we humans act sometimes.

Curtis, thank you for making this video. You are brave to do this at your age, it’s not easy and it makes me think I am playing it too safe. I am 38 and I feel like if I quit, I will have a hard time coming back and will be older. Also, gap is not that great and this would be my second time. You doing it at 56 gives me more courage to do it now. Also you dont look 56 bro you look lke you are 45.

I had to make the video because I needed to talk about it. I really struggled with leaving what was really a good job at 56, but since I resigned, I have felt very good about the decision. I can't tell you what to do, but I can say that I wish I had done this sooner. Thanks for the looking 45 comment, I do try to eat well and exercise regularly, but it is probably due more to genetics. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Exactly, you can always get another job. Your happiness comes first. I’m close to your age, and I think it is especially difficult for our generation (GenX) because we were raised by parents that didn’t have the internet. I have young parents (18 years apart) and feel like I would be a lot further along in my entrepreneurial journey if I had the support of my parents. I’m not blaming them either, they’re just looking out for my best interest, but ultimately this is my life. I am in the process of reviving and rebranding my TH-cam channel. I will be quitting soon also. Follow your passions, dreams and best of luck to you! I subscribed to your channel and look forward to see your journey!

Thank You, Wow, looked at your channel, you are doing awesome. Yes, getting online, expressing my thoughts and just putting myself out there is something I am kind of uncomfortable with and something I never thought I would do. Taking a mini retirement is not common, I have no one to talk to about it, so I am talking about it and putting it out there. I am also looking forward to this journey, I am going to a place I've never been before, I can't wait to see what it looks like. Good luck with the rebranding, from what you have already achieved, I am sure you will do well, I have subscribed to see what you do.

@@curtislake333 thanks! FYI, now is a great time to start a TH-cam channel. They changed the algorithm and are pushing out smaller creators! TH-cam pays well. I didn’t make a video for a year due to personal reasons and still receive monthly payments from Google Adsense!

First video, it leaves a lot of room for improvement, the next one will be better.
