Excellent podcast. I agree with Maliha that unfortunately people in Pakistan generally lack the skill level that can be seen abroad but the reason is not because of their lack of intent or desire to learn. It is not just an individuals failure but the failure of a country to develop policies that facilitate entrepreneurs, whether local or from overseas, to invest in particular industries and simultaneously developing courses, certification or training that will directly feed the talent into those industries. Consistent application of these policies would allow people to develop a strong skills base which could be passed on to future generations. Next level would then be investment in R&D in these industries and creating specialized skills not generally available locally or abroad. Automobile industry in Japan and watch industry in Switzerland are a good example. What we have seen in our lifetime is self serving, short term and vision-less policies put in place by the rulers, be it civilians or military, that led to the downfall of our economy forcing investors to divest which results in flight of monetary and human capital. Point is that skill development in a society is a long term process . There is a reason why we have to import finance ministers and Governor State bank from abroad, because there are no such institutions within the country that would provide locals with the skill level to handle such institutions that deal with international organizations.
