There is a culvert that runs under the road we live on. It failed back in 2021, and this was the result. It also caused the road to partially collapse.

I looked up, and there they were. Not a very big swarm.

This is the 6th swarm of Spring from my neighbor's and my hives :( We've run out of hive bodies to split them into.
Apiary Status April 8th, 2024

Been a busy in the apiary this year. I think this is the fourth swarm this year. After I recorded this video, we had two more swarms on the same day. These were low enough to capture. One was the biggest swarm I've ever seen.

I lost the queen in this hive, and they've been going crazy for a few weeks. I introduced a new queen yesterday, but I have my doubts they accepted her :( Fingers crossed.

My brother and I took our pop to Massanutten Storybook Trail. The weather was perfect. The trees were turning their Fall colors. Music from www.bensound.com

Fun for about 30 seconds. Then it's noisy & uncomfortable.
I was confused this year, because it seemed I had two hives that swarmed multiple times. I was always told that a hive will build many swarm cells to leave the remaining bees with a new queen, and the first to emerge would kill the others before going on her mating flight. This is NOT always the case. Queen cells may be left alone, and may leave with a smaller swarm. The first swarm leaves with the old queen and is called a "primary swarm". Any swarm thereafter leaves with at least one virgin queen, and is called a "cast swarm." TIL
Thanks for sharing. As a new bee keeper this year, I'm trying to learn as much as possible. Will swarming end after the spring or keep happening throughout the summer? Also, when they swarm and if you encourage them into a new hive, do you need a new queen for the old and new hive? Thanks
It can happen later, but I find it far less likely. It’s not always a bad thing. It is their natural means of reproduction. If all goes well your hive(s) will end up with a new queen. For the beekeeper it can be unwanted as it takes time to rear a new queen. While that’s going on, you have fewer bees to gather nectar to make honey, and it usually happens while the nectar flows are at their peak. So long as you have more equipment, it’s generally best to split the hives before they swarm. That way you grow your apiary & can more afford the inevitable loss of a hive. Alas there are only so many hives an old man like me can manage. Once I run out of hive bodies, I let nature take its course. This year my bees seemed determined to swarm. The bees will always build several “swarm cells” before they swarm. The old queen will leave with roughly half the bees, and leave the nurse bees to raise many new queens in the old hive. The first one to emerge will do away with others before going on her mating flight. With any luck, she will return to the old hive. After a short while, she will begin to lay eggs in earnest. Best to leave them to their task at hand. The swarm will have the old queen in their midst. If you manage to capture the queen, you needn’t replace her. If you find the queen and capture her, keeping the swarm should be easy. Where the queen goes, the swarm will follow. Cage her, and place the cage in the new hive. Once the bees are in the box, release her into the box. She’ll run down between the frames. Even if you never find her, if the bees march into the hive, you likely have her. Of course none of this is necessary if the swarm chooses your new hive on their own. Despite my best efforts, I’ve personally not had such luck. I have a bee vacuum. So long as the swarm is within reach, I’ve had good luck with vacuuming up the swarm. I generally don’t see the queen as my eyes aren’t what they once were. Still, I often seem to blindly capture her 😀

What a great video, Dad looked so captivated ! I’m so glad you had the perfect weather 🥰
Theys buzzin’
I saw a bumblebee the other day. First bee I’ve seen in 30 years. Plenty of wasps, no bees.
It’s hard to even get a queen mated, because there are so few hives in the area, and no natural hives.
