Facets (RPG by FarAwayTimesGaming) Full Playthrough
This is a playthrough of the game "Facets", an RPG Maker game made by FarAwayTimesGaming (AKA John Thyer). The game is designed as a resource-management boss rush. The idea is that rather than grinding fights for resources, you're given a limited amount of resources and need to figure out how to stretch them to defeat all the bosses. The mechanics aren't complex, but everything in the battle system has a purpose, and you'll want to use everything to its fullest. This game doesn't demand perfection, but it does demand care; if you go into the game expecting to hit stuff until it dies and heal willy-nilly, you aren't going to make it to the end. On top of that, the game's story is compelling, unique, and well-written, albeit sad. If this sounds like your thing, it's worth playing this game yourself. It only takes 2-3 hours if you have experience with RPGs (it's easy to launch the game too), and it can be found here for free:

Let's get into the playthrough. I'll focus on the gameplay first to avoid any spoilers for people who want to read this part of the text before watching the video. This will be different from the challenge runs on this channel. Usually, I know everything about the fights, have a clear plan in place, and reset the fights until I get something I'm happy with. However, this playthrough is blind, so I'm trying to figure out what the best approach is on-the-fly and make educated guesses about what long-term decisions to make. This means that the run won't be that polished, but obviously that comes with the territory.
I chose Classic mode since I figured the game would be at its best when pushing me to conserve resources as much as possible. Looking at the Prepared mode right now, it seems that you start with ~one extra copy of most items you'd normally find in the game, and you get a ridiculous number of extra Bombs on top of that, which would all but trivialize the game. I also chose Wait mode since I wanted time to process the mechanics and make better decisions. This didn't stop me from choosing attacks too quickly on a few occasions though.
For a full breakdown of my choices in this playthrough, the bosses, and the story, please see this Google Doc:

      @@FarAwayTimesGames Hmm, unfortunately, I don't really know of a good, centralized location for this info. The Strahl community Discord (where this challenge came from) has some resources, but they're pretty bare-bones. Strahl has put together a Google doc in an attempt to centralize some of that info, but it hasn't gained much traction. FF6 doesn't have any entries at all. XD I don't dare try to link anything since TH-cam will probably shadowban this comment if I do. I have the same name on Discord, and I'm down to chat there. I've learned most of what I know from watching TH-cam videos made by other challenge runners, actually. A person named Moogleboss was the person who initially got me into this hobby. GameFAQs has comprehensive info for certain challenge runs that are well traveled, but if you want to explore outside the box they won't help as much. Anything labeled as a "mechanics FAQ" or "algorithms FAQ" is also very helpful, but it's hard to synthesize that into a challenge run directly. AI scripts are uploaded to the Final Fantasy wiki for 6, 7, and 9 at minimum, and probably other games too, though I've seen some small mistakes in the FF6 ones.

    A pretty simple and straightforward boss, but it makes for a good opportunity to elaborate on EXP routing! The inactive EXP may be a boon in a regular run to ensure no one is left too far behind, but it's something to work around in a low level run like this one.

    • @Lockirby2
      @Lockirby2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's definitely a double-edged sword. Without the Inactive EXP, our levels would end up being a bit lower throughout the game. The optimal route should be a Level 7 Tifa getting all of Diamond Weapon's EXP and ending the run at level 24. We'd have plenty of breathing room to farm AP with other characters too, which would solve some of the problems from this playthrough.

      Thanks! I honestly didn't know for sure that there was a tool either until I started learning how to route it. That said, I was hoping there'd be one somewhere, and I'd probably have tried to make a spreadsheet or something to do it if there were no other options. I feel like the EXP route is the biggest reason why FF7 is so interesting from a long-term planning perspective.

  • @Lockirby2
    @Lockirby2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    -Tifa wants to take on Rude in Rocket Town, a section of the game that gives a fair chunk of EXP in itself. On top of that, she needs enough EXP to be prepared for Rude, so she eats Inactive EXP throughout most of the game. Therefore, she's a good choice to leave on the floor for Diamond Weapon. Unlike Cait, this gives her enough room to take even more EXP, so she takes EXP from Rapps and Proud Clod as well. -Cid joins at a high level and we don't get much of a chance to deny him EXP, so we instead let him take a bunch of Inactive EXP and then let him skip EXP from Hojo. -Barret and Red XIII are in the same boat. We need a couple characters to take Inactive EXP from both Diamond Weapon and Hojo, and these two are good candidates since they join so early. We deny them as much EXP as possible in the earlygame/midgame to make room for the 30 000 EXP they'll get from the two big bosses. -Vincent can't join the party. The EXP from the extra Lost Number battle is just the tip of the icebarg. The real issue is that we can't deal with an extra character receiving Inactive EXP. We also can't pull the same trick as with Yuffie by letting him join near the end since he joins at three levels above the level average.

    Even with 9999 HP 999 MP lv 60 I'll NEVER fight IT EVER without Knights of the round at your LVS even if you had the HP MP switch materia TO use it it would NOT kill Carry armor instantly anyways. Arm grab even at lv 60 with 9999 HP 999 MP is the ONLY way to lose solo so I'll STILL Never fight it UNLESS you KILL it instantly with KoTR and at lv 24 it will NOT kill it instantly if you HAD the 255 MP to USE It.

The need for the Magic Defense bug to be fixed, the fact that 10 HP makes a huge impact on your chances, and that AI manipulation... I guess I didn't mention it anywhere, but I'm not allowing Transform because I consider it to break the Solo Character clause. It's a grey area though, and I might have done it if Schizo or Carry Armour turned out to be impossible without it.

    So why did I say earlier that Ice resistance was mandatory here? The astute viewer might notice that the heads flip the order they attack after the de-syncing trick. This should be unsurprising given that we let the Ice Head get an extra turn in. What *is* surprising is that the heads don't flip their attacking order if the Fire Head attacks first. My hypothesis (which I have neither the tools nor the knowledge to test) is that the heads are queuing up Nothings at the same time. I don't think the order flips on the turn where they both do Nothing because enemies will typically act in the order that they queue. However, because Nothing happens instantly, on the *next* turn, they'll queue at exactly the same moment. I expect that the game has some sort of tiebreaker when this happens (e.g., ordering the enemies by which slot they're in), and the Fire Head acts earlier according to that tiebreaker, which means it takes the ATB lead on the Ice Head again while also being further ahead in its attack script. This is critical because this ends up causing the Fire Head to get two turns in a row more times later in the fight, causing the heads to de-sync more. Eventually, we get hit by a Double Breath and an unresisted Ice Breath on the same turn, leading to a swift Game Over. This behaviour stumped me for a while, and I only solved the fight by accident. Recall that we need to be attacked by the resisted element on the first turn? I had six attempts in a row where the Ice Head attacked first, causing me to get annoyed and "pointlessly" switch to resisting Ice. I'm glad this happened; I have no clue how else I would have figured all this out. Regardless of whether my analysis is correct, the behaviour was consistent across many attempts. After the heads run out of MP, there are two more points of interest. First, we can Steal a Protect Ring here, which will be handy later. Second, both heads have a death counter that doesn't consume MP. It's Lightning element, but we can't afford to run the Bolt Ring over the Circlet to nullify it. Thankfully it's tankable as long as we don't kill both heads at the same time. No reason not to use the OP Dragon Scales for damage at this point in the fight. I played this part slowly to avoid doing something stupid. Even after the death animation plays, we're not done with this fight yet (because of course we aren't). There's a bug (I have no clue if it's fixed in the Steam version) where running away remains disabled in random encounters after the Schizo fight. The bug will persist until we exit the room, so I ran out the closer south exit and then backtracked to the save point afterwards. The time it takes to hit a random encounter is consistent every time you load a save, so before Schizo I made sure to save the game on a seed where we wouldn't hit anything after Schizo. I determined whether the seed was good enough by trial and error.
