How to Continue Using Expired HP Inks for HP PageWide XL Series
Models Not Affected: HP PageWide XL 3900, 4000, 4100, 5000, 51000, 6000, and 8000.
Other models are also compatible with using expired inks, provided the following steps are followed.
Issue:
Some HP PageWide XL printers may stop printing if an ink cartridge expires while still installed in the printer. This issue can also arise after a firmware update, as newer firmware versions require user intervention to continue using expired inks.
Symptoms:
Printer halts unexpectedly with a “Red X” indicator on the ink cartridges, even if the ink levels are adequate.
A warning message appears at the top of the screen, stating that the printer is "Out of Supplies" or cannot continue due to expired ink.
Cause:
The printer firmware does not automatically allow expired inks to be used. This may occur more frequently after updating to the latest firmware.
Solution:
Reseat the Ink Cartridges:
Open the printer ink compartment.
Remove each ink cartridge with a “Red X” indicator and re-insert it firmly.
Upon reinsertion, the printer will display a message stating that the inks have expired. Users will be prompted to accept that HP cannot guarantee print quality with expired inks, we have not noticed any changes in print quality while using expired inks.
Acknowledge the Expired Ink Message:
When prompted, press “OK” to confirm you want to continue using expired inks.
Note that HP has confirmed expired inks generally do not affect print quality, and many warranties on these models may already be expired.
Job Queue Management:
After reseating the cartridges and confirming expired ink usage, the “Red X” should turn into a “Yellow Warning symbol.”
If the job queue was interrupted, access the job queue screen and manually release any pending print jobs to resume printing.
Subsequent Printing:
The printer will not ask again for confirmation on these expired cartridges until they are removed and re-inserted again.
Additional Notes:
Quality Assurance: HP has indicated that using expired inks will not damage the printer or significantly impact print quality in most cases.
Warranty Considerations: Most users with expired ink cartridges likely have printers beyond the warranty period, so continuing with expired inks usually does not affect any active warranty.

Hi, I have a Workcentric 6515 that makes a shaded black, rectangular shaped block/line all the way down on one side of every document only when making copies or doing scans. It does it both from the feeder and the glass. No problems with lines and such for print jobs from the computer. Only When I need to scan to make copies or scan to email/computer. I am concerned that it could be the scanner assembly but any advice on other things I can check? Thanks

You might try cleaning the Color Toner Density (CTD) sensors. I have an ipf670. I did this and now the machine says the new cartridge is the wrong cartridge, despite having the same part number (MC-10).
