Twist Me Up A Smoke - Original Song - Recorded at Sun Studio live off the floor.
Twist Me Up A Smoke - by Keith Rowe
On November 7, 2022, Jeremy Richmond, Gord Deans, Karen Heaton, Lindsay Southerland, and I recorded four of my original songs at the inimitable Sun Studio - where Elvis paid its owner, Sam Phillips, a few dollars to record two songs for his mother, starting rock and roll as we know it today.
Check off one Bucket List item.
It's is a museum by day - miraculously identical to its 50's setup. Every night it is transformed into a fully functioning recording studio, and can be rented for a ridiculously small fee.
Everything you hear, including the vocals, was recorded live off the floor the way they did it back in the day. There are no overdubs, except for a guitar shot at the last second.
Geek notes: The room is exactly the same as Sam's setup in the 50's. He did the acoustic treatment on the walls and ceilings. Apparently he and his wife laid the floor tiles. They stood me on the X where Elvis had recorded That's Allright Momma - his first hit - and others. The kit was left behind by Larry Mullen Jr.'s, when U2 recorded several songs at Sun for Rattle and Hum in the 80's. The drum overhead mic is a priceless, 50's RCA ribbon mic. The vocal mic for Karen and Gord was a late 40's Altec "birdcage" combination ribbon/dynamic. I think I played through an ancient Gibson Explorer amp, with another very old ribbon mic in front of it.
Twist me up a smoke, give me a light
Sit down here beside me in this
Full moon circle night and you can
Tell me all about me and I'll tell you if you're right.
Twist me up a smoke give me a light
When I was six years old and you were five
We taught each other how to cheat and
Lie and swear and fight it was a
Hazy definition, of friendship, I'll agree
But I was six years old and you were five.
I thought it was all your own doing my friend
Thought it was all up to you
But circumstances always reveal my friend
And tonight it's revealed
What they've done to you
Then one full moon night you were gone
Did you get sick of here, or did
I do something wrong
Every dying soldier on the
Table brings the fog
All I know is one night you were gone
I thought it was all your own doing my friend
Thought it was all up to you
But circumstances always reveal my friend
And tonight it's revealed
What they've done to you
Now I see you're out there flying still
Catch it on a wing instead of
looking, looking, looking, looking for a life in pills
Proud of how you've climbed out of the
Hole that dragged you down heart of the
soul of your will
Now I see you're out there flying now

Microphone shootout Neumann u87 VS DIY U87 clone
มุมมอง 38K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Here we put a bonafide Neumann U87 against The NoMann, my DIY u87 clone by Microphone Parts. We check it out on guitar, drums, vocals, and snare. I built the NoMann from a donor MXL 990 body, using M.P's complete kit(capsule, electronics, and new head basket). But I'd suggest just buying M.P.'s complete kit. No wasting time pulling an old mic apart, and it looks better when it's done. In every ...

I knew right away that #1 is Neumann bc it has something like a compression on it, second mic has more dynamics and I wouldn't like that if I wanted a 87 clone, other than that #2 is veeeery slighlty darker and sounds almost exaclty the same if we forget the dynamics thing. Thank you for the comparison!

I was so bummed out because I did not see which microphone was 1 or 2. During my listening I was sure that mic 2 was the Neumann, and that made me sad because I liked that one the most, it sounded more mix ready and less rough in the high end for my ears. Scrolled through the description and found the answer, and got super happy that in fact my favorite was the one I can make and afford for my own studio. The microphone looked different than what's shown on MP-webpage though, its the S87 I guess? Did you upgrade any parts or choose something specific to get that high-end roll off? Great Video!

When you built the mic did you go with the flat response or high end rolloff setup? I just bought the mic kit and was curious what the most similar way to go. Thanks for the video!

This was great! Thank you so much for doing this. The mic parts sounded sooo good to me! It was the clear winner to my ears! I modded a tube mic using Microphone parts RK-12 capsule and it is so nice. I choose it over my neuman tlm 102 all the time. Microphone parts rules!

mic 1 was clearly milky smooth u87 mic 2 was not that glued together in all the freq. more bass (as "modern" music looks for now). i think they did this intentionally? maybe your build? wish youhad a build one from roswell so i can hear the comparison as you a/b test was the best one i heard

What made me realize that Mic #1 was the Neumann was the transient response. It just picked up the kicks, snares, and strumming of the guitar better. All percussive elements sounded snappier and crisper. There was barely a difference on vocals. A small difference, yes, but still barely a difference. You'd be hard-pressed to pick the difference in those mics out in a full mix on vocals.

    • @scottregan
      @scottregan 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Exactly my realisation too. Snappier and crisper but less brittle. And I am absolutely not a gear nerd and believe they are overpriced, but I could hear these differences

On my Focal cms50s the U87 gives a bit smoother mids and is natural in the fundamental, The MP sounds every bit as good if not preferable in the mix here, though - it (somehow) tracks the upper harmonic more smoothly and your voice benefited a lot from it in this tune & arrangement. For my taste the U87 sounded a bit too crispy and inconsistent from about 5kHz on up.

I’m only listening on beats earbuds, but…the difference between the two sounds negligible to me. There is a slight difference, but not enough to matter I don’t think. I could make a mix work with either mic based on this. Thanks for going to the trouble, man!

I don`t know about nubmer of each mic. But on my home acustic I am already can bit feel pure neumann sound. Regularly it is has very good clarity and in this case mic 1 sound for me more like pure neumann. Second one also sound good but sound bit more dirty and scene is not same clear. but diference is very small. Just bit more low sound contrast and not same bright sound. maybe because capsule anyway not original. In china they try made a premium copies but some small details they anyway can`t replicate same as it did on original factory. After using FX is really no difference in sound

I'm impressed with the comparison, the similarity of the mics, and with myself (lol) that I was able to call which was which accurately. The cloned mic sounds to me like it has a bit more color and gain, which is actually a bad thing in most situations. The OG has more of a flat response and stays clean at the louder parts. The difference was heard mostly in the mids/hi mids, where the lows and highs were all but indestingquishable from each other. That said, the difference in sound is way closer than the difference in price. Perhaps with some subtle tweaking of the clone design an even closer sound can be achieved, so I'd still say that the project is not a bad choice.

Mic #1 sounded smoother, warmer, less brittle. More bottom and high end. So guessed Neumann correctly. I felt #2 broke up on the loud parts, but perhaps due to coarseness. But was close.

Nice sound with inexpensive equipment, except the U87. At first, I couldn't tell them apart, until he started singing higher notes. Then, I noticed the S3-87 was slightly darker. Less noticeable in the mix. Good for the money, tho. I've never had the opportunity to compare my MJE "Fatboy" to a U87; but it might be in the same league.

I did not like the clone on its own but i was surprised how powerful and round the clone mix was sounding. Clone in the mix is my favorite!

    • @johnjacobs7186
      @johnjacobs7186 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes, absolutely. Mic #1, the Neumann, just seems to compress the individual tracks in quite a smooth, to my feel soft brush-stroke kind of way which appealingly takes an edge off, but then in the mix the cumulative effect is a slight loss of life.

  • @tyvode_official
    @tyvode_official ปีที่แล้ว

For me it sounds like the clone is more sensitive to dynamics while the Neumann is more neutral and flat. I have to admit except for the vocals I liked the clone each time better then the actual Neumann.

I'm sitting here with all new Creative speakers for my computer, and I'm not completely convinced by them yet, but to my ears, with these speakers, I feel that Mic 1 has sliiightly more presence than Mic 2. Mostly on guitar, actually. I thought it would be easy to hear with the shakers, but there they sound about the same. The difference on guitar is almost like a fresh set of strings has been put on between the mics, and for the vocals, "s" sounds slightly muted in Mic 2. I think both mics are pretty good, and I would have a hard time choosing if I didn't have to pay for them, but they're not quite a matched pair. If I were to guess, I would say Mic 2 is the Neumann with older components. Building the Nomann is a good investment, though, depending on how much the components cost.
