While I do believe that Hogwarts Legacy's unfortunate ties to the Harry Potter creator played a part in why it didn't get a single nomination (regardless of what side of that issue you stand on), I disagree on some levels. The main point I disagree with is that the game should be nominated solely because it sold a lot of copies. Although popularity plays a big role in what gets nominated, popularity by itself does not mean quality. Call of Duty games would consistently get nominated if that was the case, as would sport titles such as FIFA and Madden. The other point is that the game was talked about for all the wrong reasons, mainly because of its ties to J.K. Rowling and her political views. Game would probably still get some buzz without the unfortunate connection, but it got wildly overshadowed by media and influencers picking up on the anti-trans narrative. The last thing is that the game is hard carried by the Harry Potter franchise. This would explain the big sale numbers, since there hasn't been a new AAA Harry Potter game ever since the movie tie-in games in the 2000s/early 2010s. The sad thing is that the game fumbles this insane advantage it has over other games, as it falls off a cliff the moment you leave Hogwarts Castle. The world is filled with mindless, repetitive, unrewarding, copy-pasted activities that even Ubisoft would shy away from. The story is extremely mid, generic as hell, and completely disconected from Hogwarts outside the first couple missions. The only good character in the entire game is Sebastian, since he is the only one with an actual arc (the other two are just the classic "we need to defeat XYZ bad guy") and it's still completely undermined by the fact that he gets sent to Azkaban, but you can cast the unforgivable curses willy-nilly all over the castle in front of students and teachers and nobody gives a fuck. Other side quests are very basic "go there, do this." The only other side content in the game is the Room of Requirement and three broom time trials. The game doesn't have quiddich or even wizard's chess (like how hard would something that simple be to implement). What you then end up with is a mediocre RPG carried solely by its attachment to a certain franchise whose creator is a controversial figure, released at the start of the year (recency bias exists) that wasn't that starved for good games. Should it be nominated for at least one category? Probably. It is surprising that it hasn't been? Not really. How much of that is actual media bias is hard to say, although it definitely exists. These awards also serve as ads for the games featured, so it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility that some money has exchanged hands either, but that might be too tinfoily.

Hogwarts not being even selected for rpg is mind boggling even if it is below mid for an rpg, and neither was cyberpunk. and for some crazy reason a fkn remake was allowed to be a nominee for game of the year.
