The Hudson River Palisades cliffs - nDurso Drone
In a separate nDurso drone video, see the northern extent of these Palisades at Upper Nyack, and the Tappan Zee Bridge at

Includes: a mini-geology lesson on their formation just before the Jurassic Age of the Dinosours, where the word "palisades" comes from, and more.
Palisades Interstate Park in New Jersey
NARRATION
nDurso Drone Videos brings you stunning aerial footage of the Hudson River and its Palisade cliffs on a 3.5 mile stretch upstream of Alpine, New Jersey.
Here we begin at the State Line Lookout just south of the New Jersey northern border with New York.
At Pierson's Point, the cliffs tower 525 feet above the Hudson.
Across the river from the Greystone neighborhood of Yonkers, New York is this second location named Ruckman's Point.
Here, a mile down river from Pierson's Point, the water also lies 525 feet below.
This New York City skyline seen here is more than 14 miles downstream. The Tappan Zee Bridge is another 6 miles upstream from here. That's a span greater than 20 miles visible from this vantage point in the sky.
Like the word impale, the word palisade comes from the Latin word for a stake or spear, which is palus. Palisade refers to wooden stakes or logs assembled upright to form a fence wall, which these massive stone cliffs resemble.
"Habirshaw Park on the Hudson" is a tidal marsh in Yonkers New York constructed by Westchester County. nDurso drone's final stop is across the Hudson from the park, 2.5 miles downstream of Ruckman's Point, about even with Hillside Avenue in Alpine. Below the 400 foot high cliffs here, Henry Hudson Drive loops with Hudson Drive toward the boat basin.
An aside for fellow pilots. Any before you fly app will show that This location is almost 2 miles inside the FAA restricted class B airspace of the Hudson River and east River exclusion, which is bounded by the river shores, so you must remain over land while flying in this location. Also, By the way, the palisades are within a New Jersey state park, in which operation of UAV's is prohibited.
A quarter billion years ago, the single supercontinent called Pangaea was drifting apart. Today's seven continents became recognizable during the Jurassic Age of the dinosaurs 100 million years later. Earth's crust was thinning and cracking, and the molten magma beneath seeped up into cracks, some of which extended to the surface to erupt as volcanoes. But around future New Jersey, horizontal cracks in layers of the crust didn't open all the way to the surface, and, instead, molten magma within them cooled and hardened into a subsurface layer of igneous rock called diabase.
It's colored black in this side view of the earth sliced into interstate 80 in New Jersey, approaching the Hudson River on the righthand side.
Millions of years ago, these layers were far below the surface, but eventually were forced upwards. Then, erosion removed softer rock that covered the edge of the black layer, exposing the layer's edge as the palisade cliffs.
Why is this black layer's edge made of recognizable columns? The molten magma that intruded into the cracks cooled and shrunk as it hardened, so cracks formed within it, just as they do in a drying layer of mud, making a pattern of columns that are roughly shaped like hexagons.
The Hudson palisade cliffs look like such columns, and if they weren't topped by forest, you could look down on them and see a pattern resembling dry mud.

Hudson Palisade Cliffs at Upper Nyack NY - nDurso Drone Video Upper Nyack's Nyack Beach rests in the shadows of Hook Mountain. Nyack is the northern extent of The Hudson River Palisades - vertical rock cliffs that extend southward about 20 miles to Jersey City. The English word "pole" is rooted in the Latin word "palus," which is a stake, as in wooden pole, and "palisade" is a derivative referr...

At AMTRAK/Greyhound in Pittsburgh has the dried filled in canal crossing where buses enter/ exit Greyhound on the Pittsburgh Fort Wayne area and trestle to reach the Allegheny City portion meets mainline canal as the Allegheny City portion to Fort Wayne Trestle is along NS Railroads line behind Post Office crossing under Anderson, Sandusky and Anderson Streets where the towpath houses steps can still be seen on the railroad wall side of the Mall & Pool out to opposite Giant Eagle. When Interstate 579 was being built canal boat was found in that area as the line for canal lead up past H.J. Heinz Allegheny City plant where canal followed Old PA 28 out to Millvale Ramp where unfinished trail leads out to Northeast part of 62nd Street bridge to pull left away from existing tracks to go through the old plant to cross Main Street at Canal in Sharpsburg. From the Pittsburgh & Fort Wayne trestle up to Johnstown was the Western Pennsylvania Railroad that filled the canal in as followed the above then after crossing Main Street canal is under the Alley and Church area through the Park as it went under now Coen or 15th Street to go through the now Park to go under newer Old PA bridge that after crossing under it canal pulled left along outbound side ramp for Highland Park Bridge to flow up to northeast end of PA 28/128 where it crossed a burst aqueduct to the Schenley side of the Kiskiminetas River where name changes to Conemaugh River at the PA 286 Saltsburg PA bridge onto the Canal Park out to Whtie Station location in your videos.

Pennsylvania Canal Western Division here in Allegheny County Pittsburg now Pittsburgh Pennsylvania had two terminuses'. First before Allegheny City became part of City of Pittsburgh had the PA Canal Western Division end/start at where PNC Park today is located, as the canal walls are part of the building of the new PNC Park and Hotel that runs from the Trail up to turning right onto the Pittsburgh Fort Wayne & Chicago RR to wye to the PFTW&C RR Trestle. 2. As over at AMTRAK/Greyhound Station and Stage 1 of the East Busway out to 2nd Avenue at Saline Street at the wye at Panther Hollow Junction shows up on historic maps as Chesapeake & Ohio Canal as this is where the C&O Canal was to be build town to and through Penn Alps in Maryland at Grantsville Maryland to extend to Cumberland Maryland. At the wye above 2nd Avenue the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad filled in the C&O Canal/ PA Canal up to First Avenue Station where the bike rental is located as the canal pulled right between First Avenue Parking Garage and the Pittsburgh and Steubenville Railroad now the Port Authority rebranded as Pittsburgh Regional Transit Trestle as historically carried the Pittsburgh & West Virgina RR named Monongahela Division, Chartiers Division, Panhandle Trestle as the canal is to the east side of the inbound tracks as canal is buried on Try Street crossing 2nd Avenue east of Avenue A&B as the canal is through the wall leading to the basement of parking garage going under the old jail now family division through the walkway at Steel Plaza under U.S. Steel Tower where part of the canal tunnel is under to ramp for the back side of the Federal Building out to the Light Rail Station at AMTRAK.

I have visited all the publicly accessible sites they document for the western division and can tell you how to find them by your phone's GPS and their current state (the report photopraghed them in 1991). It has both maps and photos, which I've found nowhere else: libfiles.clemson.edu/image.php?oid=OPN_NS:3DBB9053E73598EB2033B1D1D11689D7&bid=20200122133216&t=download&f=specialstudyjuni00frit

I can see why DCA has folded or been absorbed by DCI. No fan base to speak of and corps are nowhere near the quality of years past. I doubt the east coast corps are going to travel to Indy each year for finals.

    • @neildurso
      @neildurso 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

I hear you. But I do want to say to the artists out there, DON'T GIVE UP! As a fan, it's easy for us to lose sight of how many individual human beings take that field during one show, and all of the human beings required to organize. In my middle-aged years, I have a sense that things come in cycles. Some of the more spectacular corps have gone through cycles where they've had to adapt and move their HQ to stay alive, some years unable to field a world class corps. Where are all of you DCI alum? Don't let your passion die! And you artists in the smaller core, what you are doing MATTERS and is beloved and appreciated. I know most of you don't do it because you are loved, but because you love it. Keep sight of that. Passion is contagious. (I never played for a corps, so really have no firsthand appreciation for the outrageous dedication it takes for each human being involved. But I profoundly love your art form.)

Reading and Hawthorne remained about as good as ever through 2023 (this first year in DCI was clearly something of a trial run--and I think the all age corps were a touch overscored in 2024), but until the pandemic, it looked like other corps such as Atlanta CV, White Sabers, Fusion Core, and a resurgent Bushwackers might fill the gap left by the demise of Empire Statesmen, Minnesota Brass, and (the short-lived) Cadets2. I think they can grow in 2024.

bd is my biggest bucket list drum corps. they’re the drum corps that ignited my furious passion for music in the 6th grade and the mere idea of getting to march with such an amazing ensemble has gotten me through so much crap and hardship the last year or so. i got to march with southwind this summer (lnd 💔) and saw the world championships for the first time in person, and i’m so happy that my first time going to lucas oil was with a drum corps. marching southwind, from first camp to finals, was the absolute most difficult thing i’ve ever done, and that’s coming from a guy who once rode a unicycle for 41 miles in a single round trip; in one day. all that to say that this ballad just speaks to me. one of the greatest memories from the greatest summer of my life up to this point.
