Fr8t yard is pronounced Freight Yard. Population figures are misleading. SC’s annexation laws are strict; a lot of the population live in unincorporated areas outside of city limits and are not counted in the cities’ population. If they could be counted, Greenville and Spartanburg’s populations would be much larger. A couple of years ago Spartanburg opened a walking/biking trail through part of the downtown area, the Hub City Hopper, with the first curb protected bike lanes in the state. Presently, W. Main St. leading into the downtown area is being renovated to add curb protected bike lanes. Spartanburg has an expanding network of walking/biking trails with plans for it to eventually be 55 miles in and around the city. Spartanburg’s Mary Black Foundation Rail Trail is older than Greenville’s Swamp Rabbit Trail.

A little known fact about Spartanburg’s history is that in the early 20th century when female doctors were rare and it was usually difficult for women to get into medical school, Spartanburg had 3 female doctors. The women had a “healthmobile”, a van that brought health care to rural areas and textile mill villages in Spartanburg and Greenville Counties. There is a historical marker about Spartanburg’s first female physician in Morgan Square. As she was active in the suffragette movement, the marker is part of the National Votes for Women Trail.

Spartanburg is home to 7 colleges and universities as well as the SC School for the Deaf and Blind.. Some businesses in Spartanburg County participate in a van pool program that provides transportation to work for people who do not have it. Expanding this program was discussed at the most recent city council meeting. Several projects are underway in the downtown area including a new baseball stadium and mixed development that is the largest investment in the city’s history. A 945 acre park and nature preserve is being planned for next to Glendale Shoals just southeast of the city. A first on the state nature trail designed specifically for people with special needs is being built at Lake Blalock just north of the city.

It will begin in Inman, end near Hendersonville, NC and will be called the Saluda Grade Rail Trail. Nearby Spartanburg has an expanding network of trails, and plans are that they will eventually interconnect into a 55 mile long trail system. The Rexall drug store in Inman is one of the few drug stores left that has a soda fountain.

Boiling Springs is an unincorporated area of Spartanburg County, not a town with a city government. Croft State Park and Walnut Grove Plantation are not located in Boiling Springs but are just south of Spartanburg. Boiling Springs is just north of Spartanburg. The Price House is located about 14 miles south of Spartanburg near Woodruff, SC. There is a Denny’s restaurant just off of I-85 near Boiling Springs but the only Denny’s Plaza that I have ever heard of in the area is the park at the Denny’s corporate headquarters tower downtown Spartanburg. A large Super Target store is under construction in Boiling Springs; it will be the 2nd Target store in the Spartanburg area.
