The Marching Illini, including Chief Illiniwek, preform the Three In One.
Racist and cringeworthy
NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CHIEF
Not an alum but what a shame to see traditions like this die because of some offended children. I always loved going to Illini football games back in the 90s. This always gave me goosebumps.
This video allows me to reconnect with my father. ‘72, ‘12.
The first griddy
I was there
RIP destroyed by a couple people on Twitter

Still makes me so proud and happy after all these years. Graduated 1984
Was he the guy in the Village People?
You could see him coming. It didn't matter. It was bigger than that ! was a, pride of what time had kept alive in a respectful way ! Now, gone.
Bring back the chief
Was this recorded on a potato?
@meestrada11 The mascot is "The Fighting Irish". Isn't that pejorative against Irishmen? Oh, well maybe it's just accurate. Like Chief Illiniwek was accurately a proud and honorable figure. Although, after watching the pro-Chief video, I came away a lot less in favor of the Chief. It was just a frat thing cooked up by frat boys who were boy scouts back in the 20s/30s, but you should know that we Illini alumni, at least those of us who are European American, always felt pride in the Chief.
@UsonianAC Can you document that, UsonianAC? Not doubting you. Multiple references, naturally. I was taught well.
tidak asik
:)
@Pookatube Bringing back Chief Illiniwek would be almost impossible due to the fact that the guy who spearheaded the movement to get rid of the Chief is now President of the United States.
I hated seeing the Chief go too, but you are delusional.
CHEEEIFFFFFFF!!!! * sings anthem* sniff i love the anthem....... * continues to sing*
@Rafaelle34 woooooooooooottttt!!! u an illini fan to? Oskee-wow-wow
how about the Washington Redskins, Atlanta Braves..... Good grief. if the chief is suppose to be so darn offensive, get rid of all. The U of I will never be the same without the beloved CHIEF.
Wow. 1 Unlike. Whoever that is must feel really lonely, and is taking out his/her anger on one of the most honorable traditions in college history. To anyone who puts down the Chief, all I can say is this: UNDERSTAND SOMETHING BEFORE YOU DESTROY IT. That is the root of the racism you say you are fighting against.
I'm notorious for hating college marching bands, but I've got to admit, that vocal part was really cool.
CHIEEEEEEEEEEEEEFF!!
Stop the NCAA's PC Communist agenda NOW!!!! BRING BACK THE CHIEF!!!!
He's OUR Chief, not your chief. We don't tell you what to do with your chief. Don't you tell us what to do with ours.
Baritone, I understand but did they go back for their yearly checkups? Did the predecessor honor the elders in anyway or were they forgotten after they took what they wanted?
QuickSilver. Jason Dollarhide's predecessor said it was an honor that the University of Illinois had Chief Illiniwek and gave it the Peoria tribe's full support until he died in the 1990s. A medicine man, unfortunately from the unrelated Sioux nation, gave the U of I the set of skins they've been using since late 80s or early 90s. So we've had some support from Native Americans.
And why is Notre Dame allowed to keep the Fighting Irish, with the little drunken green guy with his fists up?
San Diego State has the Aztecs. North Dakota? has strong support of their local Native American nation and supports them with their programs. The all-powerful NCAA required them to drop their team emblem, too. However Florida State pays money to the Seminole Tribe, who in turn give them permission. Somehow the NCAA allowed FSU to keep their mascot, who indeed launches a spear onto the field, even at visiting stadiums, but not the North Dakota mascot.
i spoke with a lakota woman hew has been meting with the school 4 years over the issue an she says the school wouldn't budge on doing things 2 make the chief more educational about the people he represents an it is sad cause both sides of the coin lost because of it
If it's about the money, I'm sure that a reasonable accomodation could be made by the alumni. And I'm surprised the university refused a powwow, although I don't know what complications there might be. Was a reason given as to why it was turned down? Please note: the university holds Chief Illiniwek in the highest respect. He does not walk the sidelines during a game, he doesn't do pushups after a touchdown. What you see here is his only game appearance and that's how those who love him want it.
i dont get it, does bradley not have a band?
there was many councils with the school about trying 2 get the chief more like a Illinois chief an they refused 2 respect the native culture i have told the school if they hold a pow-wow 2 show they honer the people they portray the school refuses an one of the biggest problems with the chief is the school racks in tons of money off his image an gives zero of it 2 native american indians an that it self is verry dis respectful ~~~ i like 2 see the chief return but do it in a way its respectful

The Chief will return~!~!
Chief Illiniwek returns Nov. 15 at the Assembly Hall. Time not established but either before or after Ohio State game. The university "retired" the Chief, but students have free speech rights. A new Chief Illiniwek will perform in replica regalia. The event is free for students, $5 for the general public. There are 17,000 seats in the Assembly hall. Friends of the Chief should be standing in front of one of them. (Who could sit?)
Shame on you University of Illinois for taking away the Honored Symbol of the University!
honestly why the fuck do people continue to debate this..the solution is to have a white guy in street clothes go out and do the dance because theres nothing racist about that.
and damn proud of it!
Great, all the greivance groups join in, whining in unison. You're arguments are so disjointed, internally contradictive and historically ignorant, I don't know where to begin. So I won't. I'll let your poor, self-pitying statements speak for themselves. There's no better way for people to understand how mis-educated you are. I feel sorry for you.
"Offensive in our eyes only" You forgot to add 'and only over the past 10 to 30 years.
I can tell you right now that Most young people (people not quite out of high school yet) have a greater understanding of Native American history than of say.... Roman history.
Yea, i hate it that some organizations are exempt from political correctness and some are not EVERYBODY should be exempt from political correctness.
Actually, many of those attractions are actually set up by native Americans themselves.
What a bunch of cowards to ban this! I am class of 67 but will NOT support Illinois at all because of this. Feminist PC Cowards.
there is no fight...that the teams name
good man! that guy is a dirtbag
Watching this now makes me choke up. Long live the Chief!
