Steve Albini died today or last night as I type, which is terrible news. I share this in honor of him and everyone else I know who is out there doing their thing until we are stopped. So for me., that means sharing myself as a father, as a partner. As hopefully a freind wiith my art and my drumming stuff. Like this one. FLESH WOUND drum wise is me ripping off Neil Young and Crazy Horse wit a bi...

WEIRD MUSIC THAT GOES ON FOREVER: A PUNKS GUIDE TO LOVING JAZZ written by BOB SUREN
มุมมอง 1435 หลายเดือนก่อน
Bob Suren asked me to illustrate a bunch of portraits of famous jazz greats for his brand new book, on the verge of being released from Microcosm Publishing called WEIRD MUSIC THAT GOES ON FOREVER: A PUNKS GUIDE TO LOVING JAZZ. It’s a cool book and a real labor of love with a humorous premise of introducing punk rock types to the world of Jazz, which is a pretty original idea and one I was very...

Scared Straight Live at Scott’s house Cassette recorded 4/30/85 on Robb’s ghetto blaster
มุมมอง 9310 หลายเดือนก่อน
Today I was hired by an old Australian buddy named Ross. He went on the 1985 Ill Repute Scared Straight tour, but first: Him and his friend Conn saved up a bunch of money to go the United States to drive all over the place and visit all of the cities that had punk rock scenes. They both got my address, my parents house actually, from an issue of Maximum Rock N Roll. Because I wrote a scene repo...

Self Empunishment chat with freelance artist Kristin Walsby
มุมมอง 120ปีที่แล้ว
I interviewed my wife Kristin…we had been talking about doing this for at least two years. Finally. It happened the other day. Kristin is very talented, in a lot of different areas. You can sort of get used to her handing over her latest thing she did and just going, “Wow”. And this happens a lot. Plus, we support each other and talk a lot about what we are going through as far as the freelance...
Self Empunishment chat with Tom Lyle, former guitarist of Government Issue
มุมมอง 282ปีที่แล้ว
Tom Lyle lives in New Jersey with both his family and his small record collection and lives a quiet life. But Tom was also the guitarist and main songwriter for the late and lamented DC band Government Issue, who seemingly outlived almost everyone who came out of that town with multiple lineup changes and multiple albums that are all varied and sound great. They had a very high quality across a...

มุมมอง 556ปีที่แล้ว
I went down a “DC Wormhole” recently when I discovered how much I liked the new Hammered Hulls album that just came out with Alec Mackaye singing. That led to said wormhole and eventually that included Minor Threat, a lot of Minor Threat. It doesn’t matter how long ago or how old I am now or whatever, that is some good music that still sounds good, and the version of the band I was really fasci...

I might have had to wait years till I got better as an illustrator and cartoonist, but eventually I was able to get some books released of my creative shit. How did it happen? What came out? Who is Bifocal Media? What Melvins cds were included? How did Self Empunishment come to be? All of that and much more is discussed here. You know the drill. Self Empunishment chat with Bob Suren, author of Crate Digger

I met Bob years ago when Double Negative went to Florida and he had put on a show for us. Since then, I had run into Bob during almost all of the Melvins stops in Austin Texas because Bob worked at the venue they always played at. During one of those trips. He gave me his book Crate Digger, which I thought was enjoyable. Bob also is one of those guys with an encyclopedic knowledge of music of a...

Back in the day, Errol was a lamb. He didn’t look like a thug! We went to the same high school, but didn’t cross paths. And he did the most most amazing bio mech drawings way back then. And Milwaukee had one of the best punk scenes in the entire US.

I moved to Raleigh in '86 as well. I saw Light in August at the Brewery and they became my favorite local band. I probably saw them 3 times. Still have a flyer. When John was playing with John Singletary in Finger, I was playing with his brother Neal in Watchmen. I saw Danny Chavis' face flash by and remember when he and his brother Daniel came to my little one room apartment on Park Drive the morning after meeting them at a party in north Raleigh. They asked me to play bass in their band and I asked what the name of the band was going to be. Danny picked up the paperback I was reading, the Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury, turned to the table of contents, read the title of the first story and said: "The Veldt". Crazy fun times. Wow. Poindexter Records. Didn't Todd Goss work there? I remember John Howie being a friendly, somewhat shy, pale boy in a black leather jacket who dated the amazing Lejeune Gallant, the first singer in my band when we were called 7 Deadly Sins. It's very gratifying to learn that Brian is still the same self-deprecating, super talented, walking encyclopedia of music I worked with for ten years at the Rat. Brian you taught me a lot. When I met you I was listening to U2. Thanks for throwing me so many musical lifelines.

The first and only time I met Karen, I was living on Park Drive next to the fire station in 1986. I had just got a new amp and I was trying it out. She knocked on the door, said she had some guests over, and would I mind turning down my volume. She made a point of letting me know she was Woody's mom and that she would not normally ask anyone to tone down their artistic expression. Yeah I dropped the volume. Cool lady.

I was lucky that a friend turned me on to Allroy's Revenge in 1991. Otherwise, I would never have listened to these guys. Scott Reynolds does some vocal gymnastics on that album, very busy with lots of different inflections and changes. It's easily one of my top twenty records.

Chris says he still has his Snake Nation cassette, and Luke became the drummer for Cobra Kahn and others like Totimoshi in CA, then ((THORLOCK)) with me in Missouri, then eventually back to NC in the band MAKE.
