Englesea Brook Chapel and Museum

เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 15 ก.ย. 2021
The only Museum dedicated to Primitive Methodism, a grassroots movement within Methodism that started in England in 1807 at a camp meeting organised by Hugh Bourne, high on Mow Cop, a bleak hill on the border of the Staffordshire Moorlands and the Cheshire Plain. It has been said that whilst Wesleyan Methodism was ‘for the poor’ Primitive Methodism was ‘of the poor’: miners, millworkers, farm labourers and fishermen were all inspired by ‘Freedom, Equality and Fraternity’; women, then excluded from most pulpits, became travelling preachers; and many of the movement's adherents, through its passionate advocacy for social justice, went on to become trade union leaders and MPs. From North Staffordshire the movement spread out across the world to America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Africa.
In 1932 in Britain the Primitive Methodists joined the Wesleyan and United Methodists in an Act of Union, to form the The Methodist Church in Britain.

The Fate Of Fonts
มุมมอง 110หลายเดือนก่อน
When a simple bowl would do, why did some Primitive Methodist Chapels acquire small but highly decorative baptismal fonts? Where did they get them from and what might they tell us about evolving attitudes towards childhood and Christian parenting? Today, when many coming forward for baptism are looking for a more immersive experience, we might ask what is the fate of the font? Alison Butler exp...
Elmfield College, York: A Personal Journey - York's Primitive Methodist Training College
มุมมอง 1402 หลายเดือนก่อน
In 1989 John Bibby bought an 1840s house in York called Elmfield Villa. A little investigation turned up the fact that Elmfield Villa had once formed the core of Elmfield College, the training ground for Primitive Methodist Ministers opened in 1864. Intrigued by this, John went on to uncover the fascinating history of both the building and the College of which it formed an integral part. In thi...
The Black Hole of Winsford
มุมมอง 1688 หลายเดือนก่อน
Improbable as it sounds today, in the early 1900s the centre of Winsford in rural Cheshire was blanketed with toxic black clouds that blocked out the sunlight; living conditions were miserable and, with no running water or sewerage system, unhealthy. One visitor described the town as a “vile place, akin to the black hole of Calcutta”. The cause? Hundreds of chimneys belching out clouds of smoke...

True Quakerism began to die out by 1705… All the ancient Early Quaker Giants such as the Founder George Fox, William Dewsbury, William Penn, Edward Burroughs, Francis Howgill, Stephen Crisp had all died out and it was on its last leg. That power that England witnessed from those Giants never returned. The miracles, the prophecies etc were of biblical proportions. May that Day breakout in the earth again soon!
Very Good.
A fascinating presentation - clearly explained and well presented. Many thanks for the in-depth research.
