    The dog has to understand that the leash doesn't get tense. Once that happens, I don't have to use treats anymore, I don't have to look at the dog anymore and he can also walk forward a little and stay behind. He then thinks for himself.

    You have a great way of explaining this. I have always struggled with food for my dog. I gave him one type of kibble when I first adopted him because he ate a load of rubbish. I got him to eat properly and then I saw a dog trainer who said give your dog a higher value treat when I bring him training. It was the worst trainer ever and it messed everything up. He will actually refuse and turn his nose up at most treats . I was cooking some kidney the other day and he took the bits out of his bowel and spat them on the floor. I need to be tuffer with it all again.

    Unlike cats, it's usually best to get one dog at a time. There's such a thing as same sex syndrome and littermate syndrome. My dog training assistant years ago got all her dogs and cats in the same year but years later when it was time, she said it was the worst year ever because she lost them all in the same year. She said she'd never do that again. Hope that helps.

    • @nbdogtraining133
      @nbdogtraining133 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Exactly that. We want the pressure to go off as he moves towards it, by pushing the lead towards the dog we can ensure that he feels an immediate release and understands what he did to make that happen

    I just worked with a reactive dog today (people and dogs). As in most cases, it wasn't the dog's fault. The owner never established rules, boundaries and limitations, is scared that a "no" hurts her dog's feelings, and has been in the friend-zone for the past 12 years. If owners don't establish their leadership and prove that they're in control of every situation, the dog feels the need to take over and to fill that lack of leadership. A world without a leader is a chaotic world in a dog's eyes, and a chaotic world is dangerous. The worst things, owners can do, is to give too much human love and too much freedom to a dog who isn't ready for it yet. Those are the main ingredients for nervous, fearful dogs.

    • @nbdogtraining133
      @nbdogtraining133 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The friend zone! 😂 brilliant way of putting it. I agree it usually is something that could be avoided but I’ve come across some reactive dogs with owners that have done it all right, the dog is just destined to become a bit of a nob 😅

    You were talking about the garden. I do use a no bark or the walk is over, your choice. Now you have to follow through that very first time so they know you're not crying wolf. Next walk, even later that day, same thing. You can actually see the wheels turning - do I want to bark or do I want to keep walking with Mom or Dad? Most of the time, they actually choose the walk. If they don't, you're going back the same way you came, on the boring part of the walk they've already been on. I find it works like a charm and they're choosing it. For dogs barking in their own yard, I say no bark, that's their house or yard, you'd do the same thing if that was your house. Usually get 1 whine and we keep going on our walk - good decision or good choice! Thank you for this reactivity podcast. Hope that helps.

    We had a case in Ohio where a kid who was afraid of dogs was running away from the dog. The kid was hit and killed by a car. Wouldn't want to be anyone in that situation but it never would have happened if the dog wasn't running loose. Some municipalities charge either a $1,000.00 or $3,000.00 fine if you get caught. We usually go to an enclosed or fenced in area where we are the only ones in that enclosure - not a dog park either. My sister and her dogs used to love the dog park until they almost lost the younger dog to some sort of respiratory issue - $3,000.00 vet bill for one night at the vet hospital. They haven't gone to a dog park since. Hope that helps.

    This is one of the best leash pressure videos I've ever seen. Part of the barking is their timing - like i think the dog thinks that's what they want me to do. If they could Yes and treat BEFORE the barking starts or wait 3 seconds after the bark before the dog gets the treat, but I understand what you're saying. Question: what if your dog has a collapsing trachea? Don't want to use a slip lead, anything in particular you would recommend using instead, especially if you have a leash reactive dog to people and mostly other dogs?

    • @nbdogtraining133
      @nbdogtraining133 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you! Yeah we’ve begun trying to focus on not rewarding the barking now that her engagement is up and the pressure is understood. The barking is nothing to do with the timing of the marker, she was barking all the time anyway, long before we started this stuff 😅😅

    You can actually pre-load the marker before hand. like when with a pappy you say "yes" wait 1-2 seconds and deliver the treat. Enough repetitions it should predict the outcome. You can also bridge that with with eye contact, by putting hands out to the side and mark/reward for eye contact. I see that to many ppl in the beginning are having a hard time doing 2-3 steps at the time. so break it down to 1 -> 2 -> 3 and then like dancing in their head repeat 1-2-3 :)

    In our puppy class we teach the owner that this puppy is their’s, and the puppy should not be touched, petted or held by strangers. If they take their puppy to say a farmers market and people want to pet the pup to politely say “the pup is in training, but thank you for asking”. This way the pup is being socialized and learning to ignore other people and dogs. Then we teach the owners basic obedience for their pups.

    Overall, a good video. Replace the slip lead with a prong collar. As a 63 year old man, I've trained a pitbull that was dragging a young MMA fighter down the street, do you get the picture??? in 5-10 minutes and automatically sitting at my side when I stopped. He and his partner's jaws dropped and they were snapping photos because they were AMAZED!!! Prong collar and POPPING the collar instead of pulling on the leash. IT'S SO SIMPLE!!! It's not complicated. No food involved. It's called leadership. The turns, etc. are WAY over complicated in the video. If you know what you are doing, the "driveway exercises" are VERY simple and VERY clear that turns the dog into an AMAZING heel. Left side.... right side... doesn't matter.

    • @nbdogtraining133
      @nbdogtraining133 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks, I’m not against the prong at all, however my intent with this case is that dog and owner both learn how pressure works and get the handling etc. correct then if required for more difficult scenarios, we may up to a prong if the owner needs to. So far though he’s absolutely smashing life on his slip since this video so may not need to move on to prong!

    • @nbdogtraining133
      @nbdogtraining133 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I also don’t ever start with pops, until a solid understanding of pressure and release is in place. Personal preference but I find less pops are necessary and it seems to stick more this way in my experience.

    • @surpriseitsus9622
      @surpriseitsus9622 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's OK for big strong dogs, but the average dog doesn't need a "pop" or a prong color. I like to take my time, build trust, etc.

    • @Silverbeardedsurfer
      @Silverbeardedsurfer 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'd only move towards a prong collar if slip doesn't work. Some dogs will keep pulling even on a slip lead. Or if lives are in danger e.g. Pulling owner into traffic. You can also turn the slip lead into a figure of 8 halter. A bit like a gentle leader. Video should explain which way the slip goes if heeling on the left or right though. A quick pop is the correct correction though.

    Nice demo. This could be my 2 yo male BC. He has always loved being 'out front' and it's been a battle to get any engagement to heel when he has his mind set on a favorite destination. He is better after exercise. I am actively using this style of leash work (as much as I have the patience for) and I am seeing improvement now he is past his adolescent stage (intact male). Mind you he can do a lovely heel when in class but as soon as school is out he will try it on and pull. I soldier on.

      Focus on rewarding effort/willingness more than precision, you’ll both find it much more enjoyable, then the more precise stuff is easier!

      Thanks for the feedback, not sure what happened, will fix it in the next one. I’m better with dogs than audio editing!
