March 23rd 2023 G4 Aurora Borealis - Central Iowa

An incredible and rare G4 Solar storm impacted Earth for well over 36 hours starting on March 22nd. The Aurora was visible as far south as the Southern United States. Multiple instances where the Aurora was overhead and visible in the city despite light pollution. Time-lapse ranges from 10:28pm to 12:40am CDT. Shot north of Ames, Iowa. Incredible night.

@@bruceeigsti5274 a lot of tornadoes to chase that day! Made the decision to go further west and chase the central Nebraska tornadoes near Elba and I don't regret it. The north Omaha tornado was the only offical EF4 but a lot of the tornadoes in the area that day were all near violent anyways. Crazy day!

How big was the Elba EF3 Tornado?
@@eshawnandrews5684 according to the National Weather Service survey, they found it to be at least 660 yards wide.

Don’t all tornadoes have “multiple vortices”?
I'm sure on small enough scales sure, but some tornadoes produce large individual vortexes that spin inside the main parent tornado. Some tornadoes opt to maintain a more singular vortex but this can vary through a tornado's lifespan.
They do. However, it's more apparent in more violent twisters as it allows the individual vortices to fully condense and even, in some cases, consolidate with the parent funnel. It's especially apparent in tornadoes that leave behind cycloidal ground scouring marks.
Nebraska and Iowa had a bunch of multiple vertices this year. Quite a season 😮

I for one DO think tornadoes can be beautiful, just as all things mother nature produces. I can also have an extremely strong respect and sobering fear for the complete and utter destruction nature can wreak on the world and its occupants. Those two things are not the same. It is not the loss of life people are saying is beautiful, but instead the incredible things mother nature creates. Two different things and should not be misunderstood or misinterpreted. This was a great video. Well done!

It did! It was in progress when the video starts and the tornado ends just after it crosses the road as I drove at it.

Beautiful tornadoes! Recommend stabilizers or tripod if you're going to zoom in a lot, but good that you're not dashing straight into the middle of the tornado! Yes, lots of excitement, but it looks like you've only been chasing a few weeks so understandable. Hopefully if you do see homes being destroyed you'll check on the occupants. Again, good job! You caught some beauties!
Thanks for the response! The house received virtually no damage so we moved on. I've been chasing for well over a decade so getting close to tornadoes safely is a hard-learned but rewarding skill! I love chasing them and I will never stop being excited about seeing tornadoes! I appreciate the comment!
