Hello Ms. Stewart, I am glad to see more about your interpretation of the “woke agenda” (as your nice cat rests atop). I am also concerned about undermining of gender equality and feminism themes. I wish I had more time for books, but I’ve been an avid newspaper reader since childhood and sometimes it is hard to keep up with them. I have a coworker a third of my age who keeps talking and hinting about a controversial performer “Ye” you showed just briefly, even though I asked him to not glorify him to me. My sister is a teacher and my mother was, too. I’m also a white male pro-choice ardent feminist named Bob, and very pro-LGBTQ pro-BLM pro-SJW and very concerned about the upcoming administration I read wants to ban gender affirming care. I plan to never marry, as I don’t want to support an institution that has discriminated against gays. I wish everyone know the feminism is about equality, not about hating men. “The Last Unicorn” was my favorite movie and I got the soundtrack vinyl from Germany. You said the phrase “somewhat of a unique perspective.” I read and believe that “unique” is an absolute term that cannot grammatically be modified in degrees; either something is unique or it is not. I only tell you this because I was glad to learn it myself and thought you might be, too. I don’t like to use “woke” either, for reasons like you explained. Have a wonderful day.

Hi! Just dropping by to say I hope you'll get round to sharing your thoughts on Rings of Power Season 2. I enjoyed your review of the first series, which I thought was both balanced and well-considered.

That was really, really enjoyable to listen to. Thank you.
15:30 then they shouldn't habve effing tried! You do it right or you don't do it at all.
I haven't even seen season 2 but the more of the reviews that I see, the more I just get real MAD at how many unnecessary and unwarranted changes they've made to this entire show. Sure, a 14 book series needs some changes for a tv adaptation, but this is beyond unforgivable.
@@tinyfishhobby3138 It really is
I just want this to end so we can get a new attempt. And I would go with a animated show. Put the books in a visual medium but with lower costs, also the one power will be a lot easier to represent in animated than in live action.
43:15 Aristotle's problem is that he was always trying to preserve Endoxa, autoritative opinions and since the world is perfect the existing opinions on women must also be perfect. Aristotle isn't actually the root cause. He just takes the predjudices of his society and systematizes it. He did the same with slavery.
40:30 I prefer just to say that this isn't feminism, it's capitalism. Removing everyhting potentially offensive from all media is not a progressive standoint. It's a capitalist one.
I'm just hoping it will fail soon enough and we can get an animated series or anime.
27:00 And even in the series the Red despite being the biggest single Ajah have only had a handful of Amyrlins, and every Amyrlin who has been legally depsosed was a red and replaced by a blue.
14:30 I also don't think Jordan would have a problem with non binary people, there may be non binary people bound to the wheel, beign rebeorn forever as non binary. As long as those people do not channel it's not really an issue.
1:15 Calling WoT woke is an insult to woke.
This show is a travesty that should not only be cancelled but condemned, it's writers sued for copyright infringement since it's so far from the books that it can only be described as literary appropriation.
41:42 Alternate B: If the show has diverse characters and progressive themes, as with WOT, it increasingly accompanies and signals a willful lack of care for the lore, obnoxious and preachy rationales for what are (via internal policies and showrunner messaging) well-documented quota-chasing and culture war objectives of a modern writer whose politics don't permit the original canon. It's like there's a new Hayes Code. The original barred depictions of white slavery. The new one bars depictions of "all-white" races regardless of genre, or whether it makes any geographic contexual sense (Rings of Power), unless of course it's a *negative* depiction of such a people, then it's allowed. I don't think it's raycist for whites and others to notice these trends in media. There're plenty of shows with an abundance of women or non-white characters that aren't considered w0ke. Most raycist Americans haven't even heard of this series, and certainly aren't spending their time sending unsubstantiated deth threats to yet another narcissistic showrunner who actively makes their show hostile to demographics they personally dislike, at the expense of the project's quality. The collateral damage is that eventually, a non-negotiable presentation of "diversity and inclusion" *does* become a shorthand for projects that will make changes similar to WOT, where lore is "problematic" and must be updated by the all-wise progressive. Lots of people are getting tired of that and are holding it against the labels these people use to describe what they do.
I saw "no gender equality", angrily clicked the video, and was about to leave a filthy essay on how the male characters were absolutely disgraced (I'll never forgive them for what they did to Mat's dad, Abel, turning him into a drunken lowlife) buuuut that was your point hahaha well played!

Your effusive (and, as usual, riveting) review had kept me far from WICKED LITTLE LETTERS until tonight, when I nerved myself to watch it - it didn't disappoint. Superficially, it's quite a good movie. The direction is taut and knowing, the acting is first-rate - I particularly liked the tomboyish Rose - and the score, by Isobel Waller-Bridge, of whom I hadn't been aware until now, was surprisingly melodic and engaging. (Isobel is the sister of Phoebe, another ardent feminist whose most recent performance was the neutering of Indiana Jones - in fact, many of the principal crew are women.) But the woke spoiled it for me. Not being familiar with the true story, I couldn't help wondering how much the facts, as well as the immutable characteristics, had been jiggled for the sake of agenda, and that suspicion led me to resent the lighthearted tone and giddy glee taken in bashing Christianity, a favorite sport of the left. I also couldn't help wondering how things would've been presented had Edith been, say, a Muslim. Perhaps you'll recompense my suffering by watching, here on TH-cam, the Despot of Antrim's hilarious reduction of WOMEN TALKING (2022) ("When a Bad Movie Gets 220 Awards Nominations: Women Talking"), which reduction I'm sure you'll find as painful as I did WICKED LITTLE LETTERS. But you'll be rewarded, at least, with an astonishingly accurate mimicry of David Attenborough. 🦍🙂
You have articulated my concerns about the show, as a long time book fan -Thank you.
As a book lover, I could literally only stomach the first episode. Noped the hell out after watching it.
The actual true story of the Littlehampton Letters is a real life cracking story, and would of made a great movie, but the film makers decided to make it racially diverse and they decided to make Rose an unmarried mother, who lied about having a husband die in the war. In real life Rose was married to a white English man, (black live in lover in the film) and the child she looked after was her sisters. PC Gladys Moss was also white and English, but they made her Indian, the judge was black and so was the postmistress, its highly unlikely this would of been the case in real life. They decided to make the Irish Rose common and vulgar, in one scene she pulled up her dress and exposed her ass to the police, in 1920's England, this on its own would of carried a prison term! The whole debacle on it own would of made a great film, I dont know why they decided to veer so far off what actually happened! Had this been set in 2024, England is indeed very racially diverse, but it was the 1920's, when England would of been over 99% white.
@@truthseeker444 I think there's a misunderstanding of why casting in film (like theater) ignores race. In this case, the story being told doesn't hinge on racial differences so it's just not a considersation. Sexism is part of the plot. Racial diversity is irrelevant. The story they are telling is also not intended to be an accurate depiction of historical events, just "based" on a true story. This is creative license.
@@amys0482 The story being told is set in 1920's England, and to make it even slightly credible they should have used people of the correct race, when I say correct, I mean the actual race of the people involved. Had the original story of been all black people, or Indian, and they decided to replace them with white Anglo Saxons, it would of been racism, what they have done is racist, but white folk are not allowed to cry racism. I love watching historical plays/films, because I love seeing a glimpse of how my ancestors lived, when they veer this far off reality they lose most of their target audience. A good director could of made a fantastic film based on the actual event, without it being sexed up!
@@truthseeker444 This is not a historical film though. The point of this production is not to instruct you accurately on life in 1920s England or even to accurately tell this specific story from a historical accuracy lens. Most stories with a "historical" inspiration are not attempting to do that. This movie succeeds on what it is trying to do. Judging it as poor for the race of the casting choices is an odd standard for media of this type imho. It would be like going to a play and complaining that the guy playing Richard III isn't English.
@@amys0482 It is set in 1920, so how is it not historical? They made no effort whatsoever for it to reflect life in the era it is set, and they made no effort for it to even reflect the actual story behind it, if you are happy enough with hotch-potch film making, then I'm sure you will find plenty on Netflix to keep yourself entertained, it just irritated me, Real people, with real relatives who are still alive, were involved with the actual story, and it is offensive to them, especially making Rose so cheap and vulgar.
@@truthseeker444 The Titanic isn't accurate either. There are very few movies "based on a true story" that are actually true. Storytelling is not real history and never has been. If you want history, read a history book. I don't know how to explain it better. It's not claiming to be nonfiction.
I decided to watch Wicked Little Letters following your recommendation so imagine my surprise that not only did it take place in my home town of Littlehampton but also in Western Road where I lived for fve years 🙂
@@crippsverse Did you like it?
@@amys0482 I did. Great character actors but learning about the history of my home town and recognising places added more than I usually get from a film
Wokeness or progressivism generalizes about people, especially critical theory. Critical theory says: If a group is overrepresented, the system is privileging this group. But leftist usually dont belive in it if the own group is overrepresented. You cannot see based on these factors if there is discrimination. Critical theory was always used against successful groups like Jews. The racists of the past thought Jews are evil, because Jews are so successful and overrepresented and they believed there must be a system and there must be intitutions that benefits them. Therefore they used words like Jewish Science, Jewish media etc. You always have different success of different groups, that has nothing to do with discrimination or you cannot see if there is discrimination based on these data sets. I would rather guess the discrimination was the other way around that the system discriminated Jews.
@@AdamWeisshaupt Are you talking about critical race theory? This is wildly off topic but it definitely doesn't do that. Have you actually taken a course?
@@amys0482 Yes its off topic. I answered before I finished the video. I thought that is about wokeness again and how it is the superior ideology and nothing is bad about it although it is a negative ideology that created separation since centuries. Sorry for the offtopic. I did not take a course. Such courses do not exist in my country, I dont llive in the USA. But of course wokeness and especially critical theory definitely does exactly that. It creates hate and is based on generalization. That is why Americans are never woke on a country basis. That would mean they are the most discriminating people worldwide and nobody woke want to be an oppressor or discriminating bigot. But that is what they are according to this ideology. You are systemically discriminating the rest of the world, That is also why nobody takes these people seriously because they are not honest people.
@@AdamWeisshaupt I do not think that is true. This perspective sounds like the propaganda I hear decrying critical race theory. It does not sound educated on the actual course syllabus of these classes, which is to teach about the history of racism through a critical lens. You could apply the same rubric to gender studies with the same pearl clutching, but it's just education on history with critical analysis. The division comes from oppositional groups who oppose educating voters on these topics.
@@amys0482 Critical theory was formulated in Germany to find a comprmise between capitalism and Communism (that is written in wikipedia). In the times of the black death, crical theory (at that time it did not have a name) they used it against the Jews. Afterward the same theory was also used (I think by the Guardian) to explain systemic racism against black people. I use the example to show the flaws of the theory. One group, the black people, died more and one group, the Jewish people, died less. So the Guardian said it was systemic racism that more black people died but that also means it was systemic racism that less Jews died. And this kind of thinking was responsible that people thought Jews control the world. You cannot see the discrimination based on representation. The cause of death does not say anything on this regard. And this flaw is the basis for the hate of woke people. They use theories that say nothing about discrimination but just assume discrimiantion. We had a lot of people that voted Merkel because she is a women. That is definitely sexism. But these woke people claim you cannot be sexist as a women or are only outraged on one side and that is what these theories are supporting.
@@AdamWeisshaupt If anyone, including the left, wants to talk about modern race and gender issues factually and dispassionately, that's fine. But what Amy and her comrades are doing was called, a century ago, "waving the bloody flag," and it led to nothing good. "Let the dead punish the dead." (H.G. Wells, a leftist himself)
I haven't seen the movie, but you're talking about progressive (which is good), not woke (short of performative woke)

People on the left keep confusing diversity with woke. Diversity is fine because it's organic - I give you shows like OZARK and HALSTON and THE DIPLOMAT. There are plenty of diverse characters in them, but those characters are never handled with kid gloves - those characters are never given a pass, and never clumsily and predictably elevated over heterosexual white men, simply by virtue of certain immutable features. This is called art. Whereas woke, which commits all of the above-mentioned crimes and more, isn't art. It's propaganda, and propaganda is the death of art.
@@waltergold3457 Diversity is fine but woke commits the above "crimes" and more? I work in the DEI space. I think you misunderstand it. DEI is not a zero sum game where unqualified people with immutable features are elevated above hetero white men. It is about shifting systems of prejudice that formally ONLY gave opportunity to hetero white men to allow equal access to marginalized groups.
@@amys0482 Crimes against art, yes - and as a worker in the DEI space, which I think largely a racket, you devise the divisive and counterproductive "struggle sessions" to which I referred in another comment? 🙂 I hardly need remark that when - like Amazon, creator of THE RINGS OF POWER - you create formal policy and checklists which demand the hiring and promotion of certain groups over other ones, based solely on things like race and sex, you've already built your house on sand, and are merely practicing racism and sexism in their modern manifestations.
