That blue one was gorgeous
Thanks for this. I am just changing my wick in a No12 super Aladdin. It has this style of wick raiser and I watched a few videos on how to change the wick but mine looked different and I couldn't get the wick raiser out until I disengaged those clips. I'll tap them in on the new one and hopefully I can get it back in as obviously on these type the raiser comes out the bottom. Please do you attach the wick to the raiser then install from the bottom?
Good video, but can you tell us what model Aladdin a prepper should buy? Just want a reliable and repairable (with parts availability) model lamp... Thanks man. The new aladdin lamps are over 200 dollars and I dont want to spend that really, especially when I want about 3 of them. So looking for used models that arent clapped out, or if they are, then parts availablility on ebay cheap would be great.
@@tylerhall6455 I would get some Rayo lamps for prepping. Wicks are cheap and they don’t use mantles. Only drawback is they use more fuel for the same amount of light output. Cheers
I found a #5 @a flea market $5, but it's missing the flame spreader, gallery and filler cap. It has the wick riser, wick and drip tray. Do you have any of my missing parts for sale?
I don’t have any flame spreaders, they are exceeding rare and sell for $100 and up. Most of the time i find them with # 6 spreaders. I would check with facebook lamp collectors page for someone with spare parts. Cheers
I realize is an older video but - I have a small metal cup like you use to put in your chimney when you blow it out, but I am nervous to use it for fear the very hot chimney may crack when the cold little cup is dropped in place. I just want to clarify, you place this little cup to stop the convection immediately after blowing out? You never had a cracking chimney doing this? Thanks. Great videos. I am slowly piecing a small lamp hobby together and have relied on your vids a lot.
I just used 50% rubbing alcohol and that worked well. 1 oz and swirled it around
Would you recommend using the same mantle lamp daily? Any risk of overuse? I'm researching the right oil lamp setup for my daily reading and writing done before sunrise. 2-3 hours typically.
@@JakedeBin they were designed for that. Cheers
Thank you. Pulled the trigger on my first Rayo today, eBay find. Haven't decided if I'm going new or antique for the Aladdin mantle. This video sold me on starting with both styles. What brand wick is recommended for the Rayo?
@@JakedeBin Rayo is your best bet for starting out. Very reliable and predictable. I get my wicks from Miles Stairs wicks. Just Google him. Cheers
Interesting but unwatchable
How do I get this product?
@@alimm1980 depends where you live.
The brass wick trimmers are made to trim by turning clockwise, the plastic ones work in both directions. The manner you show with the wick extended up so high could lead to an uneven trimming because it isn't referenced to the lip of the wick holder. I found it better to burn the wick for a minute or so, pull it back down, put the trimmer over it and raise the wick just enough that it starts to lift the trimmer. Then, while pushing gently down such that it (the trimmer) rests against the outer ring of the wick holder while turning clockwise. You might have to slightly extend the wick as you work out (scape away) any unevenness.
I much prefer the center draft, Model 12 and earlier. They burn better and are less likely to soot up. As far as replacing the old burners with new (23s or Maxbrite) the whole enjoyment is in restoring the old lamps and getting them going again..
I've seen that lamp in one of the Miller catalogs. Looks tall. Wondering what the height is and what size shade you used?
@@johnmitchell1769 it’s 17 1/4 from base to collar top and it has a 10” shade.. Cheers
Thank you 😊
Hello good sir! Do you see comments on these videos? I came across an Aladdin 23; a 98 year old in our church passed on to glory and we were given some of his old lamps including a beautiful 23. I looked up mantle's on eBay; $25ish dollars wow! Can you carefully tie on a Coleman mantle, or can you buy the mantle material only; or do you have to buy the whole expensive structure as one unit? Where do you recommend I get started in looking for mantles for this? It looks and seems to burn beautifully. Love the light kerosene smell. Just reminds me of simpler times. I imagine your lamp room smells VERY strong though wow! That's alot of lamps. Thank you sir!
Love your collection!
I have an English made 21c that I found in a storage cleanout. It was used maybe once and it was packed away with a spare wick and chimney. I'm a bit confused as to whether or not the 21c takes a mantle or not.
@@tonyb7748 it does. Cheers
Where can you get a globe for this puppy?😊
ตะเกียงมีแต่ตัวสวยๆครับ The lamp is only beautiful.
Lamp is looking great!
Nice work on the Miller lamp. Like to see it when all complete. Like to see one of those Wanzer’s lit too
Do you have an online store? Your collection is beautiful.

Hi, I just purchased a few lamps from an estate auction. It seems I may have a pristine model 1 in the bunch. I am likely to flip it since i am only interested in functional and emergency lighting for my cabin. I would like to get a proper assessment of the lamp and then get it into the right hands. I am too hard on equipment. Any advice? BTW, thanks for the content from Alberta, Canada
I did reply to this a few dates ago, but it didn’t stick. Send an email to dave@kerosenelamps.ca Cheers
Not sure if you'll get this. I just bought a B-53 clear that glows green with a black light. It has a "A" stamped on the bottom. I'm trying to figure out the approx age of it. Any thoughts?
1941. Cheers
The cottage is so similar to my Aunt’s on Cape Cod ♥️ She’d a few beautiful oil lamps too, my cousin still uses them. I have several flat wick ones from my uncle’s place he had down there.
Esa B&H es una joya 💎
At the beginning of Aladdin lamp chimneys, which one and how to adjust, there are several Aladdin Vases. Can you do a video of those? My wife, she is from Vancouver, and I are just learning about the Aladdin Lamps in detail. We have collected oil lamps for a while and knew of the Aladdin but just purchased our first. A Number 11. It has opened a DEEP rabbit hole. Love the vases and trying to find more information. I have several of the books you reference on the way. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the rest of the world. Kem and Sherrie
Hello! Is there a way to tell when a mantle or pieces within it are too far gone and need replaced? Im not as interested in running my uranium glass lamp as i am making it look nice again, but running it would be very fun
Don’t drink THAT coffee. ;) would you mind telling us what make/model/year that font is? TY.
If the oem mantles just weren't so expensive to buy. I try to keep extra mantles but the cost is high, so I'm extremely careful how I handle the lamp. I keep same mantle until it just won't work anymore because of the price.
Ser I just picked a lanturn like the one you have in the back on the left hand side I no nothing about this lanturn but when I saw it I had to have it it seem to me to be missing some parts I don't no the names an was hoping you could help I nomully caller Colman stoves an lanturns but sortove fell in love with. The older karo lamps I owne a few old wik lanturns that were handed doubt famly that are long gone I still use camping but this one sort of founed a place in my shop and I would love to see her run it has a beutiful glass shade I guess that's what there call sorry for writing a hole book on this but I just founed your video an thout you mite have some answers thanks an hope to hear from
do you know anything about the P&A naugatuck lamp? it's just the magnet without the branding im trying to find more info on these lamps since i just got one.
It would be great if you can show video of the heat process for straightening the bend. Thank you for sharing your experience with this interesting lamp!
Nice elite lamp with the owls and gargoyles. Looking forward to seeing it in the fall.
The prices (people are asking) on Ebay for Aladdin lamps/parts is nuts. Quick question. How do I store Aladdin lamps for the summer or more than a few months if it still has kerosene in it? For years, I've just stored these lamps as is, with kerosene still in them (one piece- font, burner, wick) for a few years and still lights up pretty nicely. What's the proper way to store these when not in use for more than a few months? (I would like to reuse the wick.) After removing the wick from the burner, do you let everything dry as is? Rinse with anything? Thanks so much.
I just change the kerosene with fresh stuff every year if I didn’t burn through what was in it.
@@Kerosenecanada Sounds good to me! Thank you!!
Brasso isn't even necessary if your using BM. I've even used it on lacquered items of which it ate right through no problem. In fact, using gloves with the stuff is actually a very good idea. That and it leaves a micothin layer of silicone on the metal thus preventing or inhibiting further tarnish for quite some time.
Thanks for covering a student lamp. I think that one will be a gem. Hope you find the parts.
I didn't know they made oil lamps that you didn't have to take apart to refill. It makes sense, though. I definitely would want these type of lamps if all I had was oil lamp lighting.
Nice find, hope you are able to find all the parts needed to convert it back to original use.
I like the shape of your lamps and the Green lamp is such a pretty color.
Enlightening video… I learned something new about when the various types of collar cramps or a made. Thank you, Joel.
Seeing your collection is amazing! I am trying to expand my knowledge on these things & this helped!
This ONLY happens when you try to make a copy of an old great item the cheapest and easiest way you can
Got one, didn’t work, so they sent me a new one. Neither work! So they asked me send them back.. said “we had a run of bad ones”
Did the same company make glass shades for Rayo and Aladdin?
Maybe pre 1932, but not sure. Rayo had more common shades, but Aladdin had their own models. Cheers
Thanks DM!
Thanks for this, this is exactly what I’m looking for, as I am having trouble with trimming the wick. Subscribed!
Wow, this was very helpful. You showed many tips & tricks I didn’t know. One question I still have (if you are still available, this video IS 3 yrs old!) is about cleaning the wick. You mention it nonchalantly, as if we all know how to do it, but I’ve been having trouble with that chore. When I first inherited my Aladdin lamp, I didn’t know how to use it at all, so I found a local guy who works on them & he very kindly gave me the rundown & a wick cleaner tool that fits in the place of the wick spreader. You then turn it around a couple times to even out the top of the wick, but the last time I used it, it didn’t touch the carbonned part of the wick. Could you put out a video on how to trim/clean the top of the wick, pretty please? The kind man who helped me before is no longer in business. 🙏😊
I have a 12 that’s almost solid matte black. It’s really pretty how ever it became that way
Sold as Jap Bronze. Cheers
I have three of the pull down / extenders...and I can not get them to work. It looks like it should be simple, spring and chains....but noooooo.
What is best way to put a new ring on? I’ve heard plaster of Paris, crimp them..??
Do you have a Instagram or email address you could possibly share i just got a aladdin lamp that i would love to send you a picture of im really trying to get it in original condition but dont even know where to begin
