My Uncle (Ray Holbrook) lived right next to that company store you mentioned Johny Cook ran the store I use to get pennys from him for my penny collection I was in Eunice when president Kennedy was assassinated I remember fishing at a cold river for carp and some great summer stays with my uncle and aunt. I lived in Washington DC so it was quite a culture shock going back there every summer.
This is after Lexington Coal Company “abated” their violations on this site, which still has over $200,000 in delinquent fines, a good chunk of their $3 million+ in delinquent fines company-wide.
Absolutely horrifying what man has wrought. The people who will the see the vast majority of gain from this live far, far away from that poisonous cloud of dust and debris.
Just read an article about your activism, you have my full support and respect! I’m excited to see the positive impact that you will have on the community, and anxiously awaiting the imminent demise of the miserable coal industry. My father was born and raised in Anstead, and I spent a lot of time in the area as a child and still spend a lot of time in Fayetteville (though I enjoyed it more prior to the tourism). Hope to meet you someday.
Hey there! I've actually never been out that way sadly. I mostly stick around the Raleigh/Boone county areas, pretty much the Marsh fork and Clear fork of the Coal River.
@@StopMTR Just checking, because I visited the operation...it was heartbreaking. Foreigners drove out the local mines, and they don't care about the people that live there...
If you don’t like coal mining you can always move to a blue state. West Virginia depends heavily upon its coal industry for energy and our economy. With out coal American would be sitting in the dark. Solar energy will not power the massive energy grid. Friends of coal and West Virginia, Kentucky will mine coal
Another viewer sent here by the Grauniad. Some explanation of what I'm looking at would be super helpful. Just a voiceover would be great. Keep up the good work.
The Guardian article brought me here. A commentary and/or more detailed subtitles showing what we are looking at would be helpful, as georgesmirnoff pointed out below.
We need some commentary, I dont understand what you're trying to show except "Coal = Bad". Agreed, unless it's the only way to make a living in that part of the country in which case "no coal = bad". So many people sacrifice their own health to provide for their families because they have no other option, so they make the ultimate sacrifice for those they love. The companies that rape the land, use, abuse and discard the workers are the villeins there, not those trying to make a living the only way they can. it's a double edge sword in that part of the country. One thing for sure, a few people are getting rich and some more politicians getting greased to look the other way and ignore the harm being done to the land and its people. really sad all around.
Junior, read the story in the Guardian. Well done sir. Keep up the good work. If you ever need help editing footage/getting footage online, let me know.
Thank you for your efforts, don't live in the Appalachian Mountains but want to support anyone who stands up against Corporations that ignore the environment. Did pass through working briefly in Butt Montana and had a chance to see the Beverly Pit become the most polluted body of water in the world and Anaconda Cooper walked away after taking their millions out of the ground. Keep out the good work!
Thank you Junior.

So why not tell us what we are looking at????
♪"I'm sorry my son but you're too late in asking, Mr. Peabody's coal company has taken it away"♪
Ooook. Guess I’ll narrate this to myself 🤷♂️
The videos need sound narration
Is this the land Larry Gibson protected?
?
Soo cool
This is the location of Sundial Mining Company’s latest violation for failure to properly construct and maintain a sediment ditch.
Leaves will be gone soon no protection at all from dust
Coal love me hate me need me coal

Sufferin' succotash! What's up with that runoff, Doc?

This is so messed up.
God sees what man is doing too the earth
Perhaps if more people were aware of who is buying that particular coal, there might be more of a positive effect...
At around 1:30, can you not fly forward over the site to get a closer look?
Such beautiful country ruined by coal :(

Thanks, I like the voice, always nice to know what I'm looking at. #StopBurningStuff
This only happens because people have become addicted to denial..
How has the Horsepen mining area held up? It was stripped clean around a decade ago...

wow, nice a bird's view!! Isn't progress great!!
Will never look like it was before strip mining
Have you flown over the Horespen area? The mining operations there stripped the mountaintops over a decade ago, and I wonder how well it recovered...
Thank you for the work you do.
... guess it is cheaper to pollute than using eminent domain to compensate that neighborhood's inhabitants...
Such beautiful landscape, just sickening to see what's being done to it.
Beautiful places. Too bad it's being destroyed. Great work documenting what is happening there!

West Virginians support the coal industry coal extraction dose not destroy the land or water. Get your facts straight
West Virginia coal miner and drone enthusiast here
Good one, helps to show how it's not just climate, it's everything. #StopBurningStuff

Don't need a bar of coal-tar to wash in that liquid coal creek.

Hero. Thank you for your work. My uncle died of black lung. The coal companies are killers. Keep going!

Can this area be protected? I can't imagine destroying such a beautiful Mountain Range!!!
According to the company’s blasting log, this was the explosive equivalent of 305 tomahawk missiles.
