Recording vintage rock music using just my second-hand junk & an SM58.
Final boss level for all my gear collected from car boot sales, pawn shops, gumtree, eBay and many more places over the years. Stream the final song here: share.amuse.io/JhsXvl0G6Q5Q
My latest addition to the collection is this Fender guitar amp which I got from a Christmas market. Was fun stepping away from Acoustic music for a bit. The G&L Electric Guitar is the only thing that I actually bought brand new from a real shop.
Oh, also follow me on Instagram so all the cool kids think I'm really popular - sleepingorchard
I recorded most things on the Tascam 688 cassette recorder, but then I wanted to go a bit over the top (as opposed to my normal, minimal philosophy) so started layering things through the Tascam preamp on top of the final bounce, digitally.
The track itself started off as a melody/riff on the guitar and the very first thing that jumped out at me was that super 70s, slapback drum sound that you hear on everything from Life on Mars by Bowie through Metal Guru by T-Rex and ending at Nightclubbing by Iggy Pop.
So that’s really the whole connection between my track and ‘Krautrock’/‘Glam Rock’, the drums. A different beat and it’d have gone in a totally different direction, which is why music is fun.
Then I decided to enjoy my new amp for a bit. The main guitar has effects on it, reverb and phaser (I think) and then the 2nd tone had to be the classic rock tone that I’ve not used for ages, and then lastly we went to ‘Metal 2000s’ tone and ‘American 80s’ tone. I feel like the full palette has been used well on this one! No fuzz pedals this time though…
Then we have vocals, which I wrote pretty quickly and then we move to the percussion, random 2015 synth and surprise bass guitar appearance, made possible by a kind friend.
If you have any questions, leave them in the comments. I’ve lost direction and purpose in my typing!
If anyone read this far and has any idea how I can get a career mixing/recording music for other people, please let me know.
If anyone read even farther still, please find me a millionaire donor. Thanks.

Recording a Pixar-Inspired Folk Waltz On Cassette // Tascam 688
มุมมอง 8K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
The music was inspired by European waltzes, Pixar music, and robotic rhythms (I nearly called it "KrautWaltz"). linktr.ee/sleepingorchard The lyrics are a poem I wrote at work, with a chorus added. I used my analog drum machine as the rhythm section, directly into the cassette recorder and then recorded guitars and vocals on top, using a Shure SM58 and my WEM Copicat tape echo alongside one of ...

My Shure SM58 appreciation continues. Alt-folk meets Soft-rock. Stream/Download here: sleepingorchard.bandcamp.com/track/1979 & open.spotify.com/album/66XmYeBASo5Ivn1jxuxIwU?si=dcLwPSv-RMWzUWgLPeblVQ I'm still really enjoying my simple recording process on the Tascam 688 cassette recorder. This time I wanted to try a slightly bigger production with a 70s folk rock/soft rock aesthetic. This was ...

I enjoy it more when it's simple. I was always worried about the sound quality going from condenser mic's on acoustic guitars to an SM58, b...

I never intended to upload this video but recently we lost our beautiful little cat Carlisle, and seeing him in the background of this video made me want to share it. He always used to sit in on recording sessions and lay down on all the equipment, especially after the tape machine warmed up. He was so peaceful and calm, so laid-back and curious. He'd go on walks with us and you could feel his ...

I think you out-American'd me with that solo!
😂😂😂 Thank you! I forgot about the little montage I put over that bit 🤦
Cool
Thanks!
Really great tune. Inspiring process and capture 👏
Thanks so much! Happy you think it’s inspiring 😃
What an inspiring process. Thank you. Loving the song 🤌
Thanks very much! Very very happy you like it 🙏😊
Thanks for sharing this cool journey. Spirit of the music is shining here.
Thank you! I’m happy you feel that spirit! ✨ 🎶
Nice mate ,cool psychedelic tune
Thank you! ✌️🌀
sweet! would make a great tv show intro or a podcast intro/theme song 👍
Haha that would be cool! Thank you very much 😃
Great track! love the percussion and drum sounds
Thank you! It was fun doing all those claps although a bit sore after 😂
So Damn cool 🎶🎶💪🏻🙏
Thanks so much dude!! 😃 really happy you liked it
Hey, great song- very Marc Bolan. Well done. I have never seen any of your videos before (this one just popped up randomly), but I really enjoyed it. I have been trying for years to de-mystify the recording process for my wife, as she was never present when my own band or any of our friends were recording. This video was extremely helpful in that regard; thank you!!!
Ah perfect! I’m really happy it could help to explain the process! I find it impossible to describe to people too 😂. It’s a hidden art it seems lol. Thanks very much for watching 😃
really cool video, always interesting to see how people put songs together.....I dont really think the 80s lead suited the song, I have a Mustang 3 and there are some great tones to be coaxed out of that amp. Thank you
Thank you! I can see what you mean about that tone, I did it mostly for fun rather than an actual good reason 😂 . Thanks for watching and for your comment 😃
This is really inspiring stuff, great songwriting and arrangement choices, my dude
Thank you very much! I appreciate that 🙏 really happy you enjoyed watching 😊
now for the drums.. do u use a actual drum machine or sampler? or do u use a daw and then rec into the tascam? anyways love ur videos man keep it up
I have used all 3 in my videos actually! The kick drum samples in this video were from a DAW (random kick drums in Ableton). Most of the time I’m using either an analog drum machine (MFB-301) or a Korg Electribe 2 as a sampler 😃. I was being lazy here so just picked the first 2 kick drums I found in Ableton 😂
you have real talent, lovely tune
Ah thank you so much 🙏 😌 that’s really really kind
Billy Idol meets Rolling Stones meets Dirty Beaches meets Thom Yorke meets John Frusciante (especially that 80's american setting with your particular guitar) Very cool! I was surprised how the distorted tracks, which in isolation are w/e but in the context of the mix, really make the track shine.
Thanks so much! I really like your breakdown of it 😃 I can hear the Frucianteness of the solo now for sure without even realising at the time, and yeah that distorted guitar especially is horrible on it’s own 😂…
Awesome, totally rocks when the distorted guitar kicks in!
Thank you buddy! Really happy you liked that part! 🤘
Track is 🔥
Thank you! 🤩
Great groove and tune.
Thanks a lot, happy you liked the groove 😃
Awesome tune, those guitar tone names are pretty spot on . The framboise connection is a bit unclear lol. Like a cameo
Hahah Framboise might never appear again, I’m not sure what I was doing with that. Yes those names are really easy to know what you’re gonna get haha. Thanks very much! I appreciate you watching 😃
@SleepingOrchard regarding ideas about how to make a living, aren't you doing it with this channel? Seems like more subscribed people every time! Can people send you stems for beatles-like production?
Very nice job! The title drew me in, the building of the song kept me watching.
Ah perfect, now I know the formula! 🤣 seriously though, I appreciate you watching, thank you 🙏
Your creativity is crazy dude
😮 Thank you so much dude! That means a lot 🥲🙏
LITTLE BIT LIKE SOME ( rude kettle ) tunes. like it !!
Ahah awesome! Thank you so much! 😃
Love both, attitude and song
Thank you! I’m happy you liked the double whammy 😆
Grossartig! Awesome video and I like to mood of the song
Thank you very much! I appreciate that! 😃
That’s rad, man! I dig the song, and it’s really cool that you did that on old analog gear. Right on! I’ll check out your work on Spotify for sure. Cheers!
Thank you! Really appreciate you watching and for anything else you may check out in the future! Analog is a lot of fun 😃. Have a good weekend!
Ur second hand junk is the kind of junk i also need in my life man! Nice tune! *Raccoon vibe hi-5*
I love it! Facebook marketplace is really good sometimes for cheap used items. Often under-valued 😃
Just came across you. Great tune. Very inspiring home recording!
Thank you! Really happy it could inspire! It’s really rewarding to have a fun home setup 😌
so cool! I love the lyrics! I would have loved a little insight into how you wrote those :) do you obsess over lyrics or just improvise a lot while you record?
Ah thank you! 😌 I’m really happy you noticed the lyrics. I TRY and always write lyrics before I record, while playing guitar. This means the guitar part can adapt to any vocal ideas and it keeps both sides flexible instead of having to force the lyrics to fit an exact progression/structure that’s already recorded. I have to force myself to finish all the lyrics at the time. If I don’t finish the song at the time, I will never come back and finish it and it will remain a ‘demo’ for eternity 😂 I do enjoy writing lyrics though and they mostly come out really quickly, though sometimes I spend ages on one single line that doesn’t feel right haha.
@@SleepingOrchard thanks for replying! I definitely feel the same about the danger of not finishing a song when I don't stick with it once it's started! Interesting to hear about your process!! I struggle with lyrics more than anything and can really only get them done once I sing the little bits I have laying around on the finished track and only then the rest of the lyrics comes.. It's quite nerve wrecking at times as you surely know :) Really cool song, I'll definitely subscribe to see what you come up with next ;)
this rocks man!
Thank you! 🤘😆
Awesome work and great end result. All credit to you.
Thank you 🙏 I really appreciate that! Thanks for watching 😊
subbed. cos i miss my copicat
Ah man! I feel that 😔
That's great ! (With 66samus's voice)
😂 Thank you!!
Totally inspiring mate 👍👌
Really glad to hear that! Thank you! 🤩
love the song and production process
Thank you! It was a lot of fun so i’m glad you enjoyed it 😃
Just discovered your channel, loving the vibe and simplicity. Will definitely try and borrow some of this approach for my next song. Beautiful part of the world too (I grew up in Suffolk and I think I recognised the Orwell in your intro). Keep up the good work :)
Oh wow, well spotted! I feel like you should win some sort of prize for getting the location haha. It is beautiful here 😌 Please do borrow all you need! Let me know when your new song is done! I really appreciate you watching 🙏
awesome track :) I remember playing that amp at my ex drummer's garage, if you keep scrolling pretty sure theres different sounds depending on the color of the light, its fun to mess around with !!
Ah nice! Nice to find someone else who knows this amp haha. Really fun, easy to tweak and useful that you can save LOTS of stuff. Apparently there’s an app too, but I’m boycotting all apps because of digital exhaustion 😂 😮💨
This was my first amp that I owned, still miss it sometimes, it was a fun one
Ace! 🤘
Thanks!! 🤘🤪🤘
Another winner, great song and a really great vibe. I love it.
Very kind as ever! Thank you 🙏 Really pleased you enjoyed it.
Great video and I love the song.
Thanks so much! Really happy you like it 😃
Such a good vibe dude! Really cool to see this whole process
Thank you! Really happy you enjoyed seeing “behind the scenes” haha.
Guitar #3 LOL
😂😂😂 nothing beats Papa Roach bedroom fans, nothing.
Great track!
Thank you so much!
70s live again 😎Mr O … definitely a Goldfrapp vibe 🙌😎loving this sound 🙌🥰
Thanks for watching, Dee! Love that you found a Goldfrapp element in there! I need to listen to them, I’m ignorant to them at the moment!
@@SleepingOrchard give then a whirl … def sound but they are pretty Bolan like I think 🙌
Gorgeous content mate, and a feast on the ears as always! 🎧😌
Thanks so so much, kind human! 😃 really happy you liked it and appreciate you watching 🙏
very niceee
Thank you for watching!
Lovely! It actually put me in mind of early 90s Depeche Mode initially with just the slap kicks and first guitar.
Oooh nice! I hadn’t thought about that era, that’s really cool to know! Thanks for watching 😃
Man I still can't figure out my 688.
It’s broken? Or it works but is just a megamash of crazy buttons that are hard to figure out? I can help with option 2, but if anything is not working as it should I am also next to useless lol. I pray mine never breaks 🙏
Love it man! Been thinking about getting into tape for a long time. How is your experience with mixing digital and analog workflow?
(Sorry I made this answer really long 😂) I actually love it! Blending digital and tape. I prefer to get the CORE song done on tape but have no qualms layering other things on top digitally at the end. I also always master the tracks digitally anyway, so they always eventually become 0s and 1s haha. You can also record things digitally and then send them to the tape machine so how you do everything is really flexible, but I don’t do this often. The thing I find about tape recording is I get the final sound I want sooooo much faster than when I record to the computer. It seems to compress, EQ and saturate audio in the exact way I like before I even do anything myself, so I just concentrate on mic placement really. When I record guitars digitally, for example, I find myself adding endless plugins to get the sound I want - Though good outboard gear/preamps could solve this, having the audio go through lots of physical things. I do love physical mixing desks for balancing and EQing so much more than plugin/mouse-controlled EQs too, that’s a big part of the speed and fun. Ultimately it’s what I find most fun and relaxing to work with! But they work together really well, I never had an issue blending tape and digital 😃
@@SleepingOrchard thank you, I think I’ll finally pull the trigger on a tape machine. (Btw your answer wasn’t THAT long haha)
Brilliant ❤happy new year 🎉🎶🎶🎶🎶 missing this on TT😊
Ahhh I had forgotten about TT, it’s been so long!! I hope you’re still posting your scenic adventures 😃 🌳🚶♀️⛰️🏕️ . Really happy you can stop by and see me here 🙏 😊
So good. Loving to see you 'go electric' that second guitar Riff is boss.
Thanks dude!! Felt so so good having an amp again!!! 😃 I’d forgotten the feeling lol
