One Winter's Night in Canada with Norwegian Elkhounds
มุมมอง 55511 ปีที่แล้ว
January 18, 2009 - Norwegian Elkhounds Monty (RIP), Quinn and Toby (RIP) go out for a late night romp in fresh snow. 2 things to watch for - Quinn does her famous "sneeze" on command, and Toby buries himself completely in the snow! Elkhounds love snow and these 3 are no exception. Quinn is looking forward to this winter which is supposed to bring us snow like this, which we haven't had for years.

Hurricane Sandy sending advance warning she'll be arriving shortly. Wind is whistling through the trees and chasing leaves down the street. Seems odd the wind is coming from the north?? Should be an interesting evening!

    Norwegian Elkhounds are a type of Spitz, meaning they are relatives of Huskies, Inus, Pomeranians, Chow chows, and other dog breeds like the Shikoku and Kai ken, also they are related to Finnish Lapphunds and Swedish Valhunds.

    My childhood dog, Gunner (pronounced the German way) died over 15 years ago. He was such a treasure- he loved being with us kids and always being a part of the action. I couldn't have asked for a better dog to grow up with. Anytime I see an elkhound (which is rare) I think of him and mourn him a little. I hope your little elkies are off playing with mine somewhere- telling stories and leaving giant grey clumps of fur everywhere. Thanks for the video. Brought back happy memories.

    I had 3 kids when we got our Elkhound. They grew up together and all though I’ve had dogs all my life, this one was the best. She took turns sleeping with each child a part of the night. Then she moved on to the next. She ended up with my youngest girl and they would sleep neck to neck. Moose dogs have a ‘neutral’ coat that does not smell, even if it is wet. Well, our dog insisted sharing everything with our kids. We fought it but eventually we gave up on the non destructive stuff. Either they are part of our pack, or they are not. When both my girls were going to take a bath together and the water was running, our dog always wanted a drink from cupped hands holding some water. Then she would actually get in the dam tub with the kids and that was too much, so we had to sit on the toilet cover to watch the girls with the door shut to keep the dog out. From the day we got her as a pup we had all of us Handel her food in different ways to insure she would not get angry. Backfired. She wanted to share her food with all of us. Ugg. Her kennel was big enough our youngest could fit inside with the dog. We often found them together there. When we got home with groceries we would put the bags on the kitchen floor and our dog would quickly check out every bag because one of them had a chewie in it for her. She never once tried to eat our food but when she found her chewie she would have a session with it and in one sitting it would be gone. To us she was loving beyond what I would say is normal. If the kids were separated or at different locations she was anxious. If we all went out together she did her best to heard them together. They would sit down for a break and their dog would sit across all 3 of them to keep them together. I have to admit she wasn’t good with other dogs who tried to get close to the kids. Even a stranger talking to us would find our dog leaning against them. If they backed off a little she would keep leaning into them gradually pushing them away. The funny thing is she did great at obedience lessons. I worked hard with her and the lessons and it was very helpful. In all the years I never saw her once display a warning growl or even curl her lips toward our children, but one time when the kids were playing in our backyard a salesman came through from the front uninvited and without asking us anything. We heard yelling and when we got to the backyard our dog had the salesman up against the wall of the garage with her standing on her back legs and each front paw was on either side of the guy and she was growling. She didn’t hurt him but neither was she prepared to let him move. I told the guy that walking around to the private back yard without us knowing was going to get trouble and not just us. Elkies are very vocal dogs, more than any I know. We could often tell what she was saying. She never tried to run away and even when we all went for a walk through the woods she would run up ahead and then rush back to make sure she could see all 3 kids. We would hike for a couple hours and she loved it. We had a big van and she travelled very well in it changing sits with the kids. But if you don’t want dog hair this might not be a dog for you. A couple times a year she would ‘pop’ her coat and it was so much hair. We bought a filter queen vacuum that had soft rubber teeth and we would turn it on low and groomed her. She loved getting that done. The first time we tried it the amount of hair was crazy. We emptied it outside and then brushed her soft under coat. The birds would swoop down and take it for their nests. Really for us the only bad thing about her was how close the kids were to her since they all grew up together. When our son reached the age that he could be in charge of his sisters at home if we had to go out for a short time, we gave the dog the run of the house and we knew she would never allow a stranger through the door. Best baby sitter ever. In the winter our kids would bundle up to go play in the snow in the back yard and the dog loved it. That is her true element. If our youngest was trying to dig a tunnel the dog would be right beside her helping her dog. The situation is not always happy. Both my middle daughter and our dog passed away from cancer. I think of them all the time. I hope they are both running through the woods having a good time. I often dream of them together and sometimes our dog talks to me.

  • @canislupis3129
    @canislupis3129 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Our moose dog loved our 3 kids so much. We could hear her vocalizing to the kids where ever they went, which was an extra safety factor. We never discouraged it because it filled our home with happiness. We would go for long walks in the woods and we always knew where each kid was because we could hear Sasha barking at them. She loved doing the thing in the woods so much. My middle child passed away from cancer 2 years ago. I pray that God has her running around in a forest with her dog having a great time. We had 2 girls and they often were put in the bathtub together. It was not uncommon to hear a commotion only to find Sasha had climbed into the tub with girls. She loved when the girls had bubble bath, you could hear her happy bark.
