      @@Sashawott9009 not at all! We are essentially just drawing a bit of blood from the tree. Time of year, hole size and how many taps you put into the tree all determine sustainability in your practice! I have a longer form video on tapping trees. Check it out!

    Do you have a video on how you built it? I saw the explainer but is that “mud” or cement/mortar on the outside? Do you have like a project plan?

      @@ActualLiteralKyle I did post a long form video, but I did not film much when I was constructing it because I wasn’t making content then. I do not have a project plan, but as long as you follow some simple dimensions you can kind of just be creative

      @@ActualLiteralKyle do you mean you’ve been having trouble with flooding in your house? Good luck to you! Worst case scenario you can put in a sumppump!

      @ haha yeah man, got the sump and the backup like 6 inches higher because when we moved in it was a NIGHTMARE. I’ve basically had to spend a lot of time on gutters and extensions and carving a path and then letting the rain do the rest of the work. These days the sump doesn’t fill until things are serious. my house is about halfway down a consistent 4-10% grade from the high edge of my yard to the street, so it happens a few times a year, maybe an inch of water on the cheap vinyl planking until we can afford some French drains.

      @Spicebushwoodcraft we also have alot of avocados. But I'm sure you can grow things we cannot grow as well such as cherries and apples.

      @ it’s amazing to think that some things people cherish are almost a nuisance to others! People just let their apples rot on the ground around here, I go around and pick them up for free! I bet it’s the same with your fruits

      @@Spicebushwoodcraft i have actually been working in an avocado and citrus orchard. Not a very big one. But still a few acres. There are Oranges and avocados all over the ground right now. Especially the oranges there's so many rotting away 😭

    This is awesome! We have Autumn Olives all over our 13 acre property in St. Clair, MI! Do you know of any medicinal properties they have or any resources you could lead me to? I know they’re medicinal, I just have a hard time finding credible info on them. I’d love to utilize these in the future!!

      @thepierceyfam5 they are high in vitamin c as well as lypocene, which is found in tomatoes that’s very good for us I believe an antioxidant, but I just like to eat them, the health benefits are the byproduct!

    So i need to bounce ideas off of you. I am in IA, I have a very small spot to put a greenhouse in. Size is roughly 5foot deep by 10wide if i had to guess. I want to go at least 3 foot underground because I need the height to be under the windows in the garage which is what the greenhouse will butted up against. About 4-5ft of concrete wall then 5 more foot of siding above it. I want to build an in ground greenhouse on our land in SE IA eventually. What do you suggest for this small of a footprint?

    Nice build! Love the little glass inserts, you should paint the bench something bright! I was always wondering how a water heating system would work with a rocket stove, like heated tables or heated floors. Adding water pipes along the flue and you could run something along the wall maybe

      @@MyriamLacroix-st6ci thanks! They were my grandpas old marble collection! I tried to dye the mortar but it came out lighter than expected. Thinking about applying the concrete dye directly to it. Also working on a water system! Stay tuned!

    Nice explanation. How long will the greenhouse stay warm enough in winter nights before you have to feed it again?

      @@southernyankeeprepper I typically will feed it for 6 hours, about once per hour when I know there is a cold night, and I’m good for up to 14 hours after, depending on weather

    If build a walapini style greenhouse you could use a smaller thermal mass (more room for plants. Those bury pipes at 12 to 15 feet where temperature is the same year round. Cools in the summer and gives you 50 degree air to start your heat process from. This is awesome though. No criticism of what you have. That rocket stove is the business.

    Did you ever make the how to video on the rocket stove? Also do you use a solar setup or do you have power ran to the greenhouse?

      @@southernyankeeprepper just put up a long form rocket stove video! Be sure to comment if you have any questions. I have an extension cord ran from the garage for lights, fan etc, but hope to get some solar or something going soon

      Hey! I typically make custards and ice cream with it, but it is versatile beyond. I have even used it in salsa and lassi!

    Love the content! Really excited to see where you go with this. My wife and I homestead in Cincinnati and are pretty stoked to see an Ohio homesteading channel. If I may make a small suggestion I’m assuming you are filming on a GoPro and the fisheye effect makes it really hard to focus. Even a regular phone camera might be a little eassier to watch.

    Found you on Facebook, now a Subscriber! You're giving me quite a few ideas for what I want to do on our property. I am also 6A but also 6B which I find strange. We're not quite sure about our water table but I would like to invest in doing a small underground Greenhouse such as yours I am also going to be doing a above ground lean to type greenhouse on our shop made from vinyl windows. Looking forward to seeing your video on how you are doing a heat mask for this. We are looking into doing possibly a wood heated one. Looking forward to seeing more videos

    Youve done a lot in 3 years. We're 5 years in, probably twice as old and half as much progress. You should definitely do a video on the greenhouse. I have something similar but no heat. I am ready to concede after 2 winters that passive solar is not possible in the upper midwest; some sort of heat is necessary. I will be eagerly following your progress and stealing some ideas!

      @@Spicebushwoodcraft We had an IBC tote last winter with a tank heater. I didn't think it did much but clearly this year tells me it was better. I froze all my tomatoes and my banana plant wilted this year, but last year they managed despite it being colder. Looking forward to your content

    How cool! You mentioned in your video your area is 7a. I am assuming that refers to annual weather/humidiy to enable what sort of plants will be successful. Additionally how did you find that information? I am looking into starting a homestead and working on some forward planning.

    It's my understanding that pawpaw is reparian and should be planted near the creek.

      @@lindaksimpson173 for the most part, yes. While I have seen them cultivated in full sun, their natural habitat is by moving water. They are happier there as a understory tree, when in direct sunlight, they have to be irrigated and painted with sunscreen essentially to live. I vote for keeping them in their preferred habitat!

    One thing all wood stoves are missing is a fresh air intake for the stove air inlet. With this you don’t have to heat fresh cold air while the stove is pulling heavy.

      So I am still experimenting with that! I have had several people mention it, and I rigged up a model to see, but I still need to work on it because yes, I am pulling drafts from all over which is counterintuitive to what I’m trying to do. Thanks for your input!

      @@EvenMoreFree I chose to do a 6in flu system. Although, if I was heating my house or something of similar size, I would probably run an 8 to 10 inch system. I had a strict budget, so I was trying to use what I had

    Rockets stoves are pretty cool but I wouldn’t use galvanized chimney pipe. When hot it will give off poisonous gases.

      I thought the same thing, but by the time the air gets to the galvanized piping, it's not hot enough to burn off any gases! Most of the heat I'd getting absorbed by the cobing

      I could, but I'd have to bring them inside over winter. They like heat, even in the summer. They are much happier in the greenhouse
