I’m reading “Hell Town” (HT) right now - terrific book - and it’s really a true-crime story although framed inside of the life of Vonnegut and Mailer. They both lived very close to where a serial killer (SK) was operating out of at the time, and their daughters at least knew in passing the SK even though they didn’t know he was killing young women. But even though I’ve read hundreds of non-fiction books I knew very little about either of them although I believe I knew there was competition between at least Mailer and Truman Capote. I think none of the three liked the other ones. But Vonnegut should’ve been a comedian if he hadn’t become “an overnight success that took 20 years” as the author of HT jokes. Great line. I did see Vonnegut’s cameo in “Back to School” and I laughed at the gags about how he wrote a paper about himself, paid for I think by Rodney Dangerfield. And Dangerfield was mad because I think the paper got a C. Even though I knew little about Vonnegut at the time I still laughed hard. Dangerfield was the true comedic master.

It’s funny because his story shapes are really just sine waves. It’s actually pretty intuitive.

I watched this for the first time several years ago before reading any Vonnegut and was stunned and thought I really needed to check his work out. Life got in the way and it took me a minute. Now I rewatched this after finally reading Slaughterhouse Five a month ago, and I loved it even more than ever. Kurt’s writing and essence has really deeply changed my life. What a legend. RIP to one of the greatest minds ever (“as far as we know”, he might say) ❤️
