1271 Heads South - Into the Rangitikei
The 3rd day of following Ja 1271 on her return south from the Steam Inc/GWR northern tour.
After negotiating some slippery rails in the yard (full sequence to be posted separately) 1271 leaves the central plateau and heads into the green pastures of the Rangitikei on a beautiful spring day.

This local excursion from Ohakune to Taumarunui and return proved extremely popular and a nice sunny day provided some stunning scenery on the Central Plateau

On the return from the combined GVR & Steam Inc Great North Island Rail Tour, Ja 1271 is seen on the run from Otorohanga to Ohakune. Tim Kerwin on the regulator had the engine running briskly which made for some rushed shots at times.

Ja 1271 heads Steam Inc's Rotary Special to Taihape and return. Some clips which show 1271 getting into her work with a good 10 total train. On-board and trackside shots of Black 5 45407 "The Lancashire Fusilier" hauling the Jacobite to Mallaig on 8 & 9 September 2017. Beautiful scenery and great train trip. Apologies for the poor shot quality due to the lack of a tripod. Note all the Harry Potter fans watching at Glenfinnan.

Heading south on the Charles Parker and Lance Redman memorial special we see a number of shots of 1275 between Te Kuiti and Taumaranui. Then in fading light she attacks the Kakahi Bank before with fire flashing and heading cutting a blaze into the gloom she struggles up The Spiral and then storms through Pokaka and away, Into the Night.

A constant pall of thick oil smoke indicates all is not well with J1236 (or Jb is you prefer) on her first mainline outing after overhall. Seen first at Utiku and then at Ruru Rd departing Taihape and finally the last of her struggles on the Mataroa bank. A last mournful cry from her whistle as she enters the Mataroa tunnel signifies the end of her labours as electric traction was brought in to...

I did hear, not sure how true it is, but someone put a load of Transformer oil, in her bunker,not designed to burn!
Why was she pulling Capital Connection carriages? I would have thought they'd be needed to run the actual connection.
Why do these look american. I like them
NZ locomotive design was heavily influenced by the American practice and manufacturers such as Baldwin. I believe the American design practices were seen as more appropriate for NZ conditions as opposed to UK designs.
The only thing that has changed is the front of the ka class

Funny isn’t it you’s copied the same gauge from us over in Queensland and built some pretty decent sized damn trains. We didn’t really build nothing too big. We got the BB18’s and the C-17’s but that was it really. Babies compared to these

Interesting… I remember our ole man saying that wheel spin… getting “up in the air”…. Was always thought of as extremely poor form/ driving/ driver control… Now days seems all the rage..

When I worked steam on the N Z R we never had steam pouring out of the funnel , that is caused by having too much water in the boiler , this carries water over to the cylinders destroying the lubrication so , keep th water level down below the center of the gauge glass
There is absolutely no priming or too much water in this video whatsoever. It’s called cold conditions, which it was very that morning
Take it from an old fireman , all that steam from the funnel means that the engine is lifting water causing cylinder corrosion .
No wonder that there is lots of steam from the cylinders , far to much water in the boiler
Now where did they reverse the train , carvan on the lead changed to the rear .

The Firemen on most of these locos really knew their trade...Steam with a touch of Grey Smoke...perfect Fire for maximum coal burning efficiency. Anytime one sees Black, thick smoke, that is unburnt coal going to waste... Qld. 3'6" Steam fan.
ive seen coal trains make less smoke, injectors must be clogged or something for it to smoke like that. otherwise very cool to see

@@philipdrummond4134 its an oil fired train, and the amount of soot it boots out means the oil isn't burning properly

You are correct @Adam. This was a trip Steam Inc ran a few years ago. Sadly haven't had any more steam in Taranaki since then.
What is this? I thought the only passenger rail in Taranaki was the Waitara to Lepperton route, and that runs on privately owned rail.
I'm curious, so if this happened again, if they had on this trip Ka942 and Jb1236, with Ja1271 would that be able to overcome the Wheel slip of the slippery tracks...?
An additional al loco would certainly have helped with the load, main problem was the track conditions.
