We Need to See Creation (Psalm 104)
Modern urban people are more alienated from the rhythms of the natural world than any generation in history. If we wish to learn to live in tune with creation then we need to learn to see it again, and to see it as creation. Psalm 104 provides a wonderful provocation to us to do just that.

Creation out of nothing. Part 5: Is it biblical?
มุมมอง 8342 ปีที่แล้ว
Does the Bible actually teach that God created the world out of nothing? Some scholars argue that it does not and that the idea is an unbiblical import into Christianity. In this video, I look at the way in which creation ex nihilo can claim to be a genuine biblical teaching, even if the Bible never explicitly teaches it.
Creation out of nothing. Part 4: Divine Action in the World
มุมมอง 5772 ปีที่แล้ว
Most of the apparent conflicts between science and religious faith boil down to the issue of how we conceive of divine action in the world. What does it mean to speak of God doing something? If science can explain an event does that mean that God didn't do it? Does the current scientific inability to explain some events provide gaps for us to slot in some divine involvement? In this video, I ar...
Creation out of nothing. Part 3: Divine Immanence
มุมมอง 5982 ปีที่แล้ว
This video explores another important implication of the teaching of creation out of nothing-that creation is saturated with divine presence. God is not 'distant' from the world but to be found in its innermost heart. [NOTE: this video is a new recording that replaces an earlier version with defective audio]
Creation out of nothing. Part 2: Divine Transcendence
มุมมอง 6742 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video we explore further the idea inherent to the teaching of creation out of nothing that the fundamental distinction in reality is that between Creator and creation and that God utterly transcends creation. This makes speaking and thinking about God a VERY tricky matter. But that realisation is a step towards humility. [NOTE: this video is a new recording that replaces an earlier vers...
Creation out of nothing. Part 1: An Overview
มุมมอง 1.2K2 ปีที่แล้ว
This video sketches an outline of the traditional Christian teaching that God created the world out of nothing. Creation out of nothing may appear to be a simple idea, but it is, in fact, a lot more surprising in its implications than many people-believers and non-believers-appreciate. Some of those implications will be explored in later videos. Here I simply map the basic terrain. Whether or n...

He died so that he could rise, thereby transforming death from the end of the road into the doorway to the life of God. (Sorry it is such a short reply.) But if you wish to understand the metaphor of sacrifice in particular, then I recommend Andrew Rillera's book "Lamb of the Free."

If you take a look at John 14:6 New King James Version 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. Doesn’t universalism provide another way other than Christ to come to the father? By eventually raising everyone up to the kingdom once their sins are burned away? Wouldn’t that technically be a third resurrection?

Thanks Robin. You added a new concept for me to ponder. If Gods wrath was poured out on Jesus for our sins, to then pour more wrath out on sinners who die is perhaps akin to double jeopardy. We do not allow this in the courts of men. Would not the courts of Heaven more just than that of men? Food for thought, as they say.....in another vein, your elucidation of First Fruits and the ramifications of this God ordained principle at the Sanctuary in Colorado is again a major leap in the broadening of my understanding towards the word of God. May God continue to enlighten your mind and spirit for the edification of His children!! Awe-inspiring.......

I am very surprised that Vladimir Solovyov's name was not mentioned among the followers of Origen and Gregory of Nyssa. His earlier teaching is very deeply connected with the idea of apokatastasis, one of his main works is called Justification of Goodness, and he is the founder of a very strong branch of Russian Orthodox philosophy, which is not only alive today, but also successfully developing. V. Solovyov writes directly about apokatastasis at the end of his first dissertation.

The very nature of God, that being unrelenting LOVE (agape), has been steadily eroded since Augustine. Eastern Orthodoxy retained the truth of Apokatastasis, and at least Roman Catholicism maintained the concept of Pergotary. The Protestant Reformation with Calvin being a lawyer interpreted the atonement as a legal transaction. We believe in Jesus and we avoid hell and eternal torment and thus get a free pass to heaven in the life hereafter. Fear became the main reason (During midlife I was one of them) for aligning oneself with the Christian religion. This made it evangelical in nature rather than the two inherited Christian traditions. After the age of Enlightenment and as a reaction, Evangelism became more literalistic in its Biblical interpretations of Jesus's Rabinical rhetoric, in order to persuade the people to repent and seek the Kingdom of God in the "here and now." He was not so much speaking about the life hereafter, as the looming danger of the destruction of the Jewish nation if they persisted in trying to overthrow their Roman oppressors. Two centuries of Fundementalist bias has done it's work. Created in the image of God so many have struggled with this hell concept and the Father punishing Jesus instead of us (if we believe) , when in fact it is the Father co suffering with the Son in dying in order to reconcile ALL of humanity. Did not Jesus say " Greater love has no man than one who lays down his life for another. God's infinite life in exchange for ALL. The resurrection the beginning of the New Age in which we can partake ( the abundant life Jesus spoke off) and be transformed NOW. Thank God for grace as generally the Christian witness has not been startling (including myself at times). And yes thank God for His infinite mercy, for although at deaths door there will be LOVE's consuming fire eradicating all that was not of God in us. Deep regret and gnashing of teeth for what we were not and the pain of mostly having taken God's name of I AM (our true Christ centred self) in vain. And then? Reconciliation! The living HOPE that we who have been awakened due to the Gospel, can now begin to live that new life right now. I thank God for my early Evangelical beginnings while thanking the H.S. in leading this now old nobody in the eyes of the world into His peace and rest. And the life to come? Like a child I trust God being God will bless us beyond to " what earhly eyes have not seen, and ears what have not heard to that which awaits us. And yes thank God for Eastern Orthodoxy for not deviating from the doctrine of hope... Apokatastasis! Bless all those who are seeking the Way the Truth and the Life. It will be revealed as St Paul discovered (Galatians 1/16), and this despite all his once sincere and zealous religiosity. SHALOM ❤️

TheTree of the knowledge of good and evil was not evil in itself. (God made it grow and put it in the Garden!). BUT what was evil was LISTENING someone OTHER than God and going against His word (encouraged by snake). We can compare it to the Law. It also gives us knowledge of good and evil - but the Law itself is not evil. It just does NOT provide nor preserve LIFE of the man. Life comes only from God directly, listening to Him only, and perfectly, 100%. Which Adam and Eve were not capable of,, as they were not from above, as the Onlybegotten Son was.

New testament, letters of ap. Paul especially, are CLEAR proof of christian universalism, or salvation of ALL through the ONE: Romans, Philipians, Colossians, Ephesians.. Christians do not even have to go any further than that in search for proofs and answers. (Your work though is commendable and thorough). But, as ap. The view of eternal punishment should be looked at as a quality instead of quantity. In the terms of eternal means that it's permanent and the punishment should be corrective so it's a permanent correction of all people.

Now here's an interesting point that even most universalists fail to see. The Bible from cover to cover teaches that God called his Priesthood in both testaments, and because of the glory of this new covenant, we called into this priesthood and do keep the Commandments of God AND the faith of Jesus Christ will be the primary people to not suffer the second death, which we know is correction. This is not any choice of the called priesthood, but all of this is by the election of God alone who calls, sanctifies, justifies and glorifies his chosen from before the world began.

This doctrine has helped me to make a return to the church and re-ignited my calling to ministry. I was raised in the Pentecostal tradition and considered myself an Evangelical Pentecostal. I moved to the United Methodist Church as and served as a clergyperson since 1984. I was shoved out of the United Methodist Church over conflicts related to their views of human sexuality and ministry. I left the church altogether for many years, thinking there was no place for me to belong. I guess it became a point of beginning my faith's deconstruction of a sort over those years that left me part of the spiritual but not religious. A I deconstructed, I served a UU congregation and served as a chaplain in a prison for several years. I have reached a place where I am basically writing my new Credo to lay out what I believe and, more importantly, the reasons for my beliefs. At this point, I am at the place of reconstruction of my faith. Now I am looking for a way to serve and share what I have learned as a result of this journey. I have no doubts that there are many others out there who need to be affirmed in their journey and beliefs. They are the burgeoning Universalists that need one another.

I would love to find out that universalism was well supported in the early church, but the fact that Origen felt the need to hide this idea from immature believers suggests to me that eternal torment was probably the standard view. If it was what the apostles taught and passed on to their disciples, there would be no need to hide it because everyone would know it already.

@@ravenraven966 comments like yours are not particularly helpful as the words of the new testament can be interpreted in a variety of ways. That's why church consensus, though not infallible, is very important. From what I understand, most of the universalists in the early church hailed from Alexandria, which lends credence to the idea that Origen was deviating from the standard teaching handed down by the apostles. I would love to be proven wrong about this.
