The 2024 Siege of Old Fort Erie Reenactment, particularly the dramatic portrayal of the American Sortie, brought history to life with remarkable precision and attention to detail. This reenactment vividly commemorated one of the most significant moments of the War of 1812, when American forces, under the cover of night, launched a daring assault from within the besieged walls of Fort Erie. The tension of the battle was palpable, capturing the bravery and desperation of the soldiers who fought to break the British siege. The event, held at Old Fort Erie, immersed spectators in the chaotic and dangerous atmosphere of the battlefield, highlighting the strategic importance of the fort during the war. The reenactment not only paid tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the soldiers involved but also offered a poignant reminder of the war’s lasting impact on the development of both American and Canadian identities. Each musket volley, cannon blast, and charge across the battlefield echoed the past, allowing viewers to gain a deeper appreciation of the fortitude and tactical skill required in this pivotal engagement. The reenactors' dedication to historical accuracy ensured that this was not just a performance, but an educational experience that brought the events of 1814 vividly into the present.

Welcome to Canada
The morning sun crept over the rippling waters of the Niagara River, casting its first light upon Fort George, where the Union Jack fluttered defiantly. It was May 27, 1813, and the winds carried with them the rumblings of war. On this day, the American forces, led by Major General Henry Dearborn and Commodore Isaac Chauncey, set their sights on the British-held fort-a bastion of redoubt nestled on the Canadian side, guarded by stout walls and stout hearts. The roar of cannon fire soon broke the calm, the American ships pounding the fort’s defenses from the river, while troops in blue and buff surged ashore, scrambling over rocky beaches under the cover of smoke. Brigadier General John Vincent, the British commander, rallied his men, their scarlet coats a stark contrast against the morning haze. Yet, the American numbers were great, and their resolve greater still. Through the din and confusion, the British gunners held their ground, firing with the tenacity of men who knew every inch of the fort's ramparts. But as the smoke thickened and the walls shook under relentless bombardment, the tide of battle turned. The Americans pressed forward, their bayonets gleaming like the fangs of a relentless predator. Vincent, recognizing the futility of further resistance, ordered a retreat. The redcoats withdrew into the surrounding forests, leaving Fort George to the victorious Americans, who raised their flag over the battered stronghold. The Battle of Fort George was a triumph for the invaders, a gateway torn open in the British defense of Upper Canada. Yet, as in all such struggles, it was but a fleeting victory in the broader saga of the war-one marked by the valor of those who fought and the quiet resilience of the land that bore witness to their deeds.
In the dense forests of Upper Canada, where the tall pines swayed like sentinels under the cold March winds, a skirmish unfolded that would etch the Battle of Longwoods into the annals of the War of 1812. There, amidst the tangled thickets and snow-clad ground, a British force of redcoats and militiamen, weary from the winter’s grip, clashed with a determined band of American regulars and Kentucky riflemen. The British, led by Captain James Basden, hoped to intercept the American forces near the Longwoods Road, a vital artery through the wilderness. On that fateful day of March 4th, 1814, both sides met in a furious exchange of musket fire and the crack of rifles. Smoke hung thick in the air as the Americans, under the command of Captain Andrew Holmes, took advantage of the terrain, their shots finding marks among the red-coated ranks. The battle was brief but bloody. Outnumbered and outmaneuvered, the British fell back, their retreat through the forest marked by the somber silence of the fallen. The Americans, tasting victory, stood triumphant, yet aware that the wilderness held more than the spoils of war-it held the unyielding spirit of a land not easily tamed, much like the conflict itself. Thus, the Battle of Longwoods became another thread in the rugged tapestry of the war, a small yet fierce testament to the relentless struggle between nations and the untamed frontier that bore witness to their clash.
They are supposed to get off 3 shots a minute !
I love Fort Erie so much, I was really upset I couldn’t make it but here’s hoping next year!
Hopefully next year you'll make it!
A Fusilier parade and celebration with concentration on a Para band? The Fusiliers have tremendous heritage and traditions, the Para’s just have habits, mostly bad. This from an ex Green Jacket who worked closely with both.
The world is wicked!
We always have fun there !
It's absolutely a fantastic event. Always a great time!

I Sure miss this I did it for 10 years this was a great event for me I am still on IMUC's Website the only guy in the white recruit uniform. I was the last one up the Ladder and yelled last man and got rewarded with an explosion of Peat moss. Down my back :) What a great Hobby! Hazar! Thanks for Carrying on the Hobby. Mr. Kelly would be proud. p.s. I still have the IMUC backpack great to see it on the field in the video. Keep up the good work.
Always tons of terrific reenacting memories at Fort Erie. The best 1812 event of the year, no doubt. Thank you for sharing your experience! It's a pleasure carrying on the torch of reenacting
Absolutely Love this!!🙂🇨🇦🇬🇧
Thank you! It's always an honour to partake in the ceremony.
Great video! I am actually the Kentuckian Captain who took the first shot of the battle at 14:45! Happy to see it captured :)
Glad you enjoyed and got to spot yourself! I was with the 49th Grenadiers

Yes, the night assault video is already on my channel, uploaded just before this one. The memorial parade footage will go up tomorrow.
thank you so much for documenting the guard so well! I was the drum serjeant for this show (in only my second year of the guard so pressure was ON) and I love watching this back whenever I miss it

Thanks so much!
It's too bad there aren't more 1812 reenactors/ events. I just got into it, 3rd US Artillery. My ancestor was in it and fought at Niagara as well as several other battles.
I agree! It's a shame there aren't more events and larger field numbers But perhaps one day it'll grow again like during the bicentennial

What is the 6/8 tune you played that was paired with Drummond Castle? We know it as Tecumseh, from the Rumrille & Holton 1817 publication. Curious as to the title and source, as it's got a few variations in it.
Unfortunately I cannot remember the name of that tune in regards to the 1812 British title as played by the Drums.

Do you know the name of the song/call that is played when they are taking the flag to the pole and readying it to be raised, before actually raising it and playing God Save the *King* ?
That call would be 'The Troop'
