"When the Saints Go Marching In", often referred to as simply "The Saints", is a black spiritual. Though it originated as a Christian hymn, it is often played by jazz bands. This song was famously recorded on May 13, 1938, by Louis Armstrong and his orchestra.
The song is sometimes confused with a similarly titled composition "When the Saints Are Marching In" from 1896 by Katharine Purvis (lyrics) and James Milton Black (music).
Origins and usage
The origins of this song are unclear. It apparently evolved in the early 1900s from a number of similarly titled gospel songs, including "When the Saints Are Marching In" (1896) and "When the Saints March In for Crowning" (1908). The first known recorded version was in 1923 by the Paramount Jubilee Singers on Paramount 12073. Although the title given on the label is "When All the Saints Come Marching In", the group sings the modern lyrics beginning with "When the saints go marching in". No author is shown on the label. Several other gospel versions were recorded in the 1920s, with slightly varying titles but using the same lyrics, including versions by The Four Harmony Kings (1924), Elkins-Payne Jubilee Singers (1924), Wheat Street Female Quartet (1925), Bo Weavil Jackson (1926), Deaconess Alexander (1926), Rev. E. D. Campbell (1927), Robert Hicks (AKA Barbecue Bob, 1927), Blind Willie Davis (1928), and the Pace Jubilee Singers (1928).
The earliest versions were slow and stately, but as time passed, the recordings became more rhythmic, including a distinctly up-tempo version by the Sanctified Singers on British Parlophone in 1931.
Even though the song had folk roots, a number of composers claimed copyright in it in later years, including Luther G. Presley and Virgil Oliver Stamps, R. E. Winsett. The tune is particularly associated with the city of New Orleans. A jazz standard, it has been recorded by many jazz and pop artists.

Thanks for listening! It is a great piece. Good luck learning the rest of it. 🙂🎹
Where can I get the sheet for this
Thanks for commenting! It’s in the ABRSM Pop Performer Book 2, Grades 4-5. 🙂🎹
Such a lovely rendition. I am learning this as a free choice piece - however I know it as "Sad Memory" (for some reason the RIAM went with that name).
Thanks for commenting! And, good luck with your exam. 🙂🎹
Thanks for commenting! 🙂🎹
@@wirralpiano Yw this helped me out a lot when practicing!
Well played. My teacher thinks this is too easy for Grade 6. Do you think ABRSM will accept this as an "own choice" piece for 2025-2026 Grade 6?
Thanks for commenting! Yes, ABRSM will accept this as a free choice Grade 6 piece. It has previously been on their Grade 6 syllabus in 1999 and is currently listed by Edexcel (the main exam board for GCSE and A-level music exams in the UK) as a Grade 6 piece. It also features in the ABRSM publication ‘A Romantic Sketchbook, Book 4’ which features pieces the exam board consider to of a Grade 6 standard. Of course there are technically more demanding pieces you could choose for Grade 6, but you don’t get extra credit for picking a ‘hard’ piece. Gymnopedie is a great, expressive piece, which if played well make you shine as a pianist. Good luck with your Grade 6 exam. 🙂🎹
@wirralpiano Thank you so much.
Love this 🎹
Thanks! 🙂🎹
Such a pretty piece with lovely dynamics.

Hi William, Please can you tell me what book this piece is from please?
Thanks for commenting! It’s my own adaptation of an arrangement that I used to play when learning the piano back in the 1980s. The book is unfortunately long out of print. 🙂🎹
@@wirralpiano it really is a lovely version. Thank you for sharing … wow 1980’s please don’t say it will take me 40 years to play as good as you 🙈

You’re correct. Thanks for commenting! 🙂🎹

it's almost my favorite song in OKC!

I like this tempo. Most people play it way too fast.
Yes, it’s good to actually hear the beauty of the melodic line without it racing past you too fast! 🙂🎹
Hello Which book is this piece in please ?
This arrangement comes from ‘A Romantic Sketchbook for Piano, Book 4’ (ABRSM). 🙂🎹 amzn.eu/d/3cujGJc
@@wirralpiano Thank you for your reply, the piece Gymnopédie No. 1 WORK: Trios Gymnopédie is it a Grade 6 piece as i have seen it listed as a Grade 6 level ? Thank you
@ Gymnopedie No. 1 was a ABRSM Grade 6 piece all the way back in 1999. It is still listed on the UK exam boards such as Edexcel as Grade 6 piece.
