The History of ADAPT, Atlantis Community, and Disability Disobedience - Part 1 with Anita Cameron
On this episode of You First, we talk with the fantastic disability rights activist Anita Cameron. Anita was, and still is, a core reason why we have disability rights today. They were an early adopter of disability rights and justice advocacy and heavily involved and a leader of the organization ADAPT (known throughout the years as American Disabled for Accessible Public Transit or American Disabled for Attendant Programs), the Atlantis community, amongst many other pivotal leadership roles. Anita joins us today to share the history of the disability rights movement and their own stories, experiences, and wisdom as someone involved in disability activism for decades. Anita will tell us about their work in this field, different protests, and the disabled disobedience that got us the crucial laws and protections we have today. We had the pleasure of speaking with Anita for over 2 hours and decided to split this into two episodes.
Lastly, we are up for a podcast award! Please vote for 'You First: The Disability Rights Florida Podcast' under the 'Society and Culture' category on the People's Choice website.

    Here in my state it is an absolutely ridiculous dis-service instead of what is advertised. I am diabetic on 2- different insulin types and have been in the emergency room at the hospital numerous times as a result. For over a year now, I have been a client at the local V.R. office only to watch all the so-called ''workers'' idly collect a paycheck, while no actual services have been provided to assist me. The agency should be Completely De-Funded since what they advertise, and actual reality do not in Any way resemble one another.

    100% disabled. Our biggest struggle here is having human rights. The best term I can think of is completely disinfranchised or exploited. There's no legal recourse for the poor when faced with many violations of human/constitutional rights. Let me know if anyone would communicate. We do advocate here. Whole body gestational donation is something that is being thrown around in the media after a research paper was done concerning it. In case there are others who care about women's rights too...

    Every person with disability are God's angels sent for some of us to learn from. I have a son with Asperger's . But what an amazing intelligent sixteen-year-old God sent to me.. I thank God everyday for sending me an angel. God bless each n everyone who has a disability. This day n age people can really crash n hurt people feelings by making fun of n laughing at. The children in schools now days can be very hateful n damaging to someone who isn't like them. I have seen it, heard it, and cried myself to sleep thinking about how much it hurts the person with disability's. breaks my heart. Adults too!! Shame on them!

    Sometimes it's not as complicated as this portrays. I have PTSD/hyper vigilance from my time in the military. One day I went to HR and told them it bothered me that I couldnt see who was coming in and out of the front door (open floor plan with 4ft cube walls). I was sitting in a spot where my back was facing the door and it gave me what I considered unnecessary anxiety. So I asked for a different cube that was open where I could see over the cube wall and I feel a lot better now. If it costs them nothing and it's not unreasonable, dont over complicate it. Use common sense.

    “To be admitted to a Baker Act receiving facility, it must be believed that you have a mental illness and are a danger to yourself or others.” What? Someone must believe something? That is no protection at all. And the right to appoint a representative adds hardly any protection. “. . . right to be treated with respect, to be free of neglect or abuse, to have appropriate clothing, “ Who is to say when these generalities have been violated, and what recourse does one have if they are? “unless restricted by a doctor’s . . . orders” This is denial of due process. “fresh air breaks unless restricted due to medical or security reasons.” This is denial of a basic human survival need, and by no stretch of the imagination can fresh air create a security risk. “To help develop treatment and discharge plans.” That meaningless generality grants no rights whatsoever. And this comment does not even cover the first 20% of this video.

    • @JillianNoelle
      @JillianNoelle 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your a violent person or escape risk there not gonna let you outside for fresh air for good and obvious reason although usually there so well enclosed, escape is virtually impossible. If you think about it, if someones threatening to take there life or someone elses or harm themselve I think its good enough that it's reason to believe. However these baker act recieving facilities are no country club. There a joke. They diagnose you in 5min and boot you in 3 days. In NY the mental health system is far better

    INVOLUNTARY COMMITMENT An unconstitutional and horrifyingly abused legal process by which-- in the absence of any destructive activity, and on nothing more than the word of a single lie people are stripped of civil/human rights and imprisoned in a psychiatric facility, with no form of recourse whatsoever, in most states for a period of up to 72 hours. A terrifying and destructive ordeal whose only positive effect is to inspire activism against the fraud of psychiatry.
