I love all of your post. Im so glad you touch on the fact that not everything is perfect. I love that picture of Darian. He looks so happy.
@@lillahigdon771 you are so kind! Nothing is ever perfect but there is still joy!
Yeah man, as an autistic person I fucking LOOVVEE swearing dude. It’s great! It causes such a release in my being because the language holds a power that really resonates with my emotions. Sometimes we need that extra flavor that really FEELS like it nails the strong emotions we feel. We don’t experience emotions on a similar plane of existence as others. If my parent restricted me on swearing around them, I think I wouldn’t feel safe expressing myself around my parents. Not even now. My parents always expressed that it wasn’t something other people liked, but if I’m not harming anybody it doesn’t matter. The lack of a chokehold on me and just letting me swear as long as I wasn’t being hurtful made my relationship with my parents much much healthier, especially as I got older and I could just express my feelings to them without having to walk on eggshells for their weird rules. Strong emotions need strong language, which isn’t very relatable if you’re not an autistic person. Constantly restricting the language utilized without giving them an equally strong and effective set of words or phrases to use will make it so your child starts hiding their genuine responses from you in order to appease you, which is really unhealthy. It’s far from something to illicit a reaction from others, more often than not it’s significant of a strong internal reaction or emotion that they’re expressing to you, so telling them they’re wrong can cause distance between the parent and child. It’s interesting how autistic people use “swears” in a way they’re less “wrong” because they’re “different words”, it just takes higher level of understanding that isn’t just “swear word = bad” which is really cool

Your piano analogy is beautiful. Last week my daughter was given a very old tin filled with buttons and various random objects. This was found at an antique shop by a relative who knew she would love it. She carefully sorted and cleaned every object and sorted them by color and shape into a small organizing bin. It was weird, but I felt like the original owner, who probably collected these items over a lifetime, was smiling upon her as each item was treated with care. She showed me each button and trinket as she cleaned and sorted. She has many special needs but she has always found beauty in everything and is so patient. Your old piano reminded me of the tin of buttons :) Both gave me such a lovely feeling in my heart.
@@quackersplatfarm hugs. Being able to find joy in small things is such a gift.
I also dislike the word self-care, as it usually implies "spending money on yourself." The metaphor you made of this piano is just beautiful! I am unsure whether things will get easier when we are old ladies, but keeping a positive mindset is not quite easy. How can we assume competence when our loved ones refuse to show evidence of their intelligence and resilience? How can we envision our future when uncertainty is a huge part of it? For me, the first thing I did in the last few years was to unfollow some influencers' doom and gloom narrative nor accept it into my life.
@@archeology hugs! I have learned to trust God with the future...I'm not perfect at it but the more I do, the more He assures me that God loves my child even more than I do. I'd move heaven and earth for my son and I love him but God loves Darrion more. God also knows my son's brain...how he thinks ...what he's capable of, a 1000% more than I do. Sooo...if I truly trust God with my son...I get on my knees and ask, seek and sometimes beg for His wisdom, for literally everything that comes up! I don't need to know all the answers about Darrion's future. I just need to be God's hands and feet on earth to minister to my child. I'm not in charge of his future God is and I trust Him to lead and guide me because His plan for Darrion (and your child) is to give him a future and a hope...to prosper him and not to harm him. God promises that if we seek Him with all our hearts we will be found by Him. I feel like I've tapped into a source of His divine knowledge so I no longer need to stress about all the possible futures. I DO what He asks, inspires, and directs...I am His faithful servant on behalf of His love for my son! He pushed me off the homeschool cliff and on a semi-regular basis I see what Darrion might have been if God had not intervened! Worry accomplishes nothing...trust and obedience in the face of overwhelming love of a child you both hold dear... Well I'm happily waiting to see what God does next with my acts of service! Hugs
Thank you for this video! My daughter is 6 and I always have this in the back of my mind.
@@All.to.Him. Big huge hugs! Remember that God already knows the future for you, your family and your daughter. Trust Him for the future so you can experience the joy of today. The time to do guardianship will come...faster than you want....so concentrate on the six year old blessing He has placed in your life! Hugs again
Hi, you certainly are not talking in an echo chamber as I am watching every video of yours! We are struggling a little now as Gaius has been having a low-degree fever for 3-4 weeks sigh so I have been somewhat quiet....Yet, during the process of struggles, he started typing on an iPad, and I now know him better. He writes out how his fever makes him feel miserable, and he feels embarrassed about keeping asking for recess at school (yes, so we stay home now until he feels better) . He also types out fun jokes and birthday wishes for his uncle for the first time. I love how much you can stretch yourself to help our kids, and how positive yet realistic you are. For a parent with a kid who has more needs, it is hard to find a community that feels right. I personally don't like communities filled with complaints and misery shows, and neither do I like communities that promise recoveries and miracles. Thank you so much for building this one for us. I wish we were closer physically, but at least we are close virtually. :)
@@archeology I'm so sorry Gaius is feeling so miserable for such a long time. I am so grateful that you are getting to know your son so well! I remember when Darrion started to write for a while! Thank you for sharing how you modify (and create!) curriculum to fit your child, especially at the highschool level. There aren't many resources on this and I search youtube quite frequently for inspiration. It's also good that you have a sleep system figured out, it's difficult having a child who struggles with sleep. Momma needs her sleep too!
@@quackersplatfarm You are kind! Yes inspiration for highschool special needs curriculum can be in short supply. My autistic son is going to be vastly different than another but showing how I modify means hopefully others can modify their school stuff too! 😂 Hugs
Question : do you remember what helped you in the early years like 1 st grade? Like what method of teaching? ❤
@@victorias5983 Hi friend, So Darrion didn't start homeschool until grade two however depending on your child's abilities, how much he or she might enjoy paperwork, and your child's frustration levels any curriculum could work with modification! If I had to do over again, I'd focus on my son's autism needs. I didn't find the Son-rise program until my son was already ten! Helping him get more comfortable in the world and us understanding his needs better may have helped him more than just my instincts allowed. No diss to my instincts just knowledge is power and hearing from someone else that I was on the right track helped enormously! Hugs

Thank you for posting this. As a mom with a neurospicy kiddo with Autism, I have been struggling with adjusting to what we are doing for school. Last year I used Gather 'Round, I loved it and bought all of the curriculum for this coming year only to find out that it is not working for my kiddo. So then I bought Oak Meadow and was excited to start that again for this year (used it the year before GR), but now that he's moved to a higher "grade" level most of the work is read, read, read and write, write, write. The amount of reading is a stretch, but do able for him, but the writing is well one of our biggest challenges. So many tears and stresses for planning later, I sat and typed in You Tube " help with Autism curriculum" and you showed up first. Your content has really helped me and I even have set and apt for the Son-Rise curriculum at the Autism treatment center of America (that I never knew about until you mentioned it). Thank you!!!!

Do you have a specific curriculum that you use for Darrion? My son is nonverbal and has autism and getting ready to go into Kindergarten homeschooling. Any recommendations?
For autism therapies at home we use the Son-rose program. You can do it online and I believe all the progress Darrion has made is thanks to this program. It is a program you can take online at your own pace. If you read Autism Breakthrough by Raun Kaufman, it'll give you a great starting off point for understanding what it's all about. It is the most loving and accepting program while helping them move forward. As for school itself, you have seen in this video how much I've had to change and adapt. For kindergarten I would recommend Gather Round Homeschool numbers and letters. You can take it at your son's pace...it be bought online and printed or order it to be printed. Academics can take a back seat unless your child is thriving with the challenge. My son has always been resistant to book work so my advice is to follow your child's lead. I hope this helps! Hugs
