UCI Gravel World Championships - A race to the front of the race - M19-34
Ride the the UCI Gravel World Championships together with Bart! With 500+ participants in the m19-34 category it is going to be a wild race. Being at the front of the starting field is going to be important. Arriving at the start grit 2h before the start is appearantly not early enough as I am at around place 200 at the start. A big task to actually get to the front of the race. After about 30m of hard racing, I am actually in the first group. At the first critical point I am able to position myself at the top 5 as the group gets smaller. After 90km I have to let go of the first group (around 25 guys) and ride my own pace. In the end I am able to sprint to p57.

Did a recon of the full course for the 2024 UCI Gravel World Championships in Halle - Leuven, Belgium. I made a short highlight video of all the things you will encounter during the race. For me the course feels like a spring classic race. Small roads, a lot of corners, up and down all the time, mud and ofcourse cobbles. With the weather forcast showing a lot of rainy days, some parts of the co...

Ride with Bart during the UCI Gravel World Series - Gravel Adventure in Poland. A 110km race with ~2000m of climbing. One of the biggest challenges during this race is to keep air in the tires. With some fast but rocky decents, the chance of getting a flat is quite big.

So many tourists on the route... insane.
Hey 👌 p53 for me 🤜🤛 with the pink Cervélo bike haha
@@thibaultdely2546 Nice! Strong ride! You had perfect timing at the sprint. When i saw you go i knew we would not see you back 😅
😅 just in Time . you were lucky to start quite early at the start because I started +-450 position it was at a standstill for 30km @@ride.withbart
Nice video! What camera do you use?
@@roderik_b Thanks! I use the Gopro Hero 12.
What tyres and pressures did you use I felt that was quite important on this course
@@hamishstrachan7481 I used the Pathfinder pro's in 42mm. 2.2bar in the rear and 2.1bar in the front.
Well Done, but to be honest, the field was far too big for that course. It’s never going to work, You will only really have 60 riders able to fully navigate the elements, the rest are just looking at wheels for 6 hours… incredible crowds… close your eyes and you can be transported to Paris-Roubaix! Belguim was an upgrade from Italy. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Wauw ongelooflijk gave beelden. Mooier dan het laatste uur van de tv registratie 😁
heerlijk zeg
@@jippevandrogenbroek754 volgend jaar in Nice kan je er ook bij zijn 😉
@@ride.withbart ja zou wel Nice zijn als dat lukt
Thanks for a great video- exactly what I experienced in my own age group . It was a fantastic event
Wow, P57 is very good, almost top 10% of our age group. I didn't recon the route, you definitely made a smart move being in the front at that tiny bottleneck just before the climb in the forest. Spotted myself early on at the start, but you rode smarter :D Good job avoiding the carnage in the first 1,5hrs. But man, what an incredible atmosphere at the course, never experienced anything like this.
@@fragfarmerCA Thanks! I was really happy that I did a recon. It was very useful to know when you had to be in the front. The first group got alot smaller after the climb through the forest, so I was really happy to be in the front there.
Poh, die valpartij ziet er beroerd uit. Vol bovenop elkaar of een fiets :/
Mooi om te zien kerel. Sterk gereden.. Deed het pijn? Is de route ergens te zien? Veel succes verder 👍
Get video …could I ask what size tyres your mate on the BMC ..was running ?? Best of luck for the event !!
Thanks! He was running 42mm tires
Excellent work dude! 💪 - may i ask with what ftp you're riding?
Nice music
Looks like a road bike could be a good choice.
Looks no worse than a Paris Roubaix . With right set up a RB would handle most of that ok.
LMAO what is this 😂 I think they should organize those events in countries that at least have some gravel roads
Or at least use the gravel roads that are there
Nice! Thank you, save me some of a job! 😂
I’m in the US and have a friend racing in the women’s 65-70 age group. Where can I see the results when the race is over. She swears she’s gonna win!
Heel gaaf. Wat een tempo
great video, thx.

Gaaf! Wat gingen jullie hard! Jullie vlogen mij voorbij haha
Mooi in beeld gebracht Bart! Vooral ook gaaf om je technische skills zo te zien 🙂
Dit stuk is eruit genomen !
Meanwhile the .gpx on ridewithgps from the technical guide has been updated (the tricky cobbles are out) and alle roads have been paved (no tricky descent either). It'll be a race course
Once again, not a gravel course… All the pros are going to be on their aero road bikes with 30-32mm tyres and road pedals.
@@Csapi007 30-32mm tyres are not going to win it on this course. Comfort is a big part with such a long race and the first 50km are pretty rough. I expect most riders to be on 40-45mm tires with a fast tire profile.
how many meters in altitude does this round have?
@@marheller87 1150m for the 180km route.
@@ride.withbart Thank you, because unfortunately you cannot rely on the information from Komoot. Did you record the altitude on your computer?
I'd love to know your thoughts on the choice of routes - I rode it a few weeks ago and even though then it was generally dry there were patches of thick mud and puddles even then. Its chucked it down since too, so tire choice will be interesting given there's a fair bit on tarmac/concrete too! I would have taken much more interesting routes through the forest de soignes - the route taken there is pretty tame "UCI Gravel" whereas there are adjacent and even parallel more interesting trails... (except the climb out of Groenendaal which is a short but sharp little test...) But as I'm a Brussels gravel rider I'd love to get your thoughts on the course...
For me the tire choice is easy, most of the course is fast, so I am going to use fast tires. The muddy sections are not that technical and with my cyclocross background it shouldn't be a problem. I'm not familiar with the area so i can't say anything about where the route could have been better. For me the first part of the route feels like a spring classic race. Small roads, alot of corners, up and down all the time, cobbles and mud. The loop around Leuven feels more like a dutch gravel race, fast and more champagne gravel. I think it's a nice combination and will set for a tough day out on the bike.
Thanks for putting this together and for sharing. A few really tricky spots. This left turn at km 52 with the thingy on the floor looks like a crash waiting to happen
THANKS great video! What size and type of tire did you use?
@@VerdextremoMTB Thanks! I used 42mm Specialized Pathfinder pro's.
For that course, MTB tires the safest bet?
Fast MTB tires are definitely a good choice. Not getting a flat tire is a big part of the race!
The cobble stone descent around km 32 will complete madness during the race with the upcoming rain. Considering all people at the start have a strong engine, the gaps will be not that small as during the qualifying races + the strong rides of older categories will by that time already have closed the 2min gap from the start.
Thanks for the video! Do you have the full GPX of what you rode?
@@FreekvandeGriendt you can find the gpx of the full course on the website of the UCI Gravel World Championships.
Hi, what do you think the predicted average speed will be for age groupers? The organizers expect the winner to arrive at around 4:30 p.m., i.e. after 4.5 hours of riding.
I don't think the pro's will ride with an average of 40kmph. I think the first guys will finish just short of 5h. I hope to finish after 5.5h with around 33kmph average. Especially with the rain they are forecasting, it might even get slower.
@@ride.withbart Thanks for the reply. In that case I hope to make it before dark😂 I would be happy with a speed of 30 km/h (M45 group).
Hi, great insight thanks. What do you think the best tyre choice will be. It looks a fast course with mainly hard pave. But there’s also some mud too 🤔
Looks great 🇬🇧
What type of tires you recommend for this event? 😄😃
Depends what the weather will do the next 14 days
I am going to ride with 42mm pathfinders. For me the best combination of speed, puncture protection and grip. I would not go smaller then 40mm on this course. With the weather forecast showing alot of rain, I do expect the course to get muddy. If you are not confident in the mud you might want to go for a tire with more grip.
🤦♂️got me rethinking my tyre choice now… Muddy sections mainly on the flat?
@@rougesim in the first 30k there are 2 dangerous fast descents (1 on bad cobbles) where you can expect riders to certainly crash … but overall the course is like 80% rideable so yes it’s a big question what to do, my guess is that most riders will keep low fast profiles. If your uncertain about your driving skills in muddy terrain you could choose more profile at the front. Choices choices …
Swalbe gone allroad. It's staying dry
looked chunky
Ça à l'air trop bien cette trace 👍🏻👍🏻
A race that actually understands the meaning of "gravel".
