Family Fun in Christchurch: Margaret Mahy Playground & The A&P Show
Dear Hannah I am posting this to you rather than Jed as you spend the most time with the girls & growing plants is a life skill as well as them understanding about nature etc. When the earthquakes happened all the heaviest parts of the topsoil went down wards & the lightest came to the top, the soil in your backyard will if it hasn't been replaced is like dust, I suggested months ago you turn the surrounds of your gardens over so to give you more depth for growing vegetables in ???? Up here in Auckland's Bunnings I purchased a bundle of heirloom tomatoes (50 to 100 years continua's) that I potted out into old drink containers from a franchise from Awapuni Nurseries I got 12 seedlings for $6.oo . I will pick the Tomatoes I like & keep the seeds from the best fruit for next year. Money saved LOL Corn plant in squares or rectangles as they are wind pollinated your first nation would wait till they were near full height & plant p[umpkins to climb up them , maybe sugar snap peas instead. You could plant lattice around the base of the first row & the corn leaves will shade the lattice from the mid day sun. Kiwi Rod
About the end of June I found some Oca (red yam) surviving in my fridge from this time last year sooooooooo I got a pot about 18' diameter & 14" tall & planted them. i do live in Auckland where our winters are way more milder then what you have in Christchurch. A couple of weeks later sprouts were appearing above the soil & now some of the new tubers are also above the soil, you need to put stakes around the edge of the pot & if you have friends with horses then get some of the bailing twine to support the stalks & leaves cause they grow to 18" + tall You should still be able to find Oca in the veg isle the tubers I used were only about 3/4" long & I buried them about 3 " below the surface, I don't know if they die back like potatoes, there is advice on You tube which I should check out shouldn't I LOL Kiwi Rod
We miss your vlogs when will be the next upload schedule for new vlog? 😊
Hey! Sorry for the silence. We've had a lot going on recently and had to hit pause on the channel. It's nice to hear we're missed though. I've got some footage saved up but not sure how soon we'll be back to posting.
it's getting close to that time of year again. Flounder, I have know idea how prevalent they are down south but here in JAFA land the season is not that far off "spawning time". The west coast flounder has a yellow belly where the east cost tastes muddy. which ever I feel they are a underrated fish & good value for the money We do have Halibut in N.Z. but it isn't often seen in the fish shops, the commercial fishermen catch them as a bi-catch & they dump them as it effects their quota
I'm making a BIGGGGG guess here. Is the climate in Christchurch similar to Seattle ????? Why I ask , well spring isn't that far away my Frushers are blooming right now in JAFA land so your probably 8 to 10 weeks behind me. Ask your folks when you next talk to them if they or friends are seed collectors, you know like**well my great great grandfather grew the same tomatoes **, seed that isn't hybridized or genetically modified . If possible, for them to send a FEW seeds from their Tomatoes, Capsicum, Ambergene & maybe pumpkins (not the super huge but the tastiest) As I said spring isn't that far off. ALSO Get 1 of them to purchase this CD by Harry Nilsson called SKIDOO-THE POINT This was from a very early made for TV carton (like over 50 years ago) you 2 weren't even glints in your daddies eyes LOL, it includes extensive info about Harry, he had a hard upbringing, the point is about a child not being pointless in a format that is easily understood by a child PLEASE DO GET IT It truly worth the effort of getting you folks to get it for you. Kiwi Rod
It's that time of the year. The Bluff oyster was classed as the BEST tasting oyster in the world & they were exported by the 1,00000 every season overfishing & the Bonamia parasite decimated the beds some years we get non but right now they are available be warned the last tube of them I ate all of them worked !!!!! White bait are the fry of our short & long finned eels & other native fresh water fish that spawn far out in the oceans. White gold the right spot in the right place can net you $2,000 a day wholesale so inevitable there are & have been fights so now the councils charge you for your spot. You don't gut & fillet them LOL Whisk up a egg or two mix into the white bait (the egg is only there to hold everything together) & spoon onto a hot frypan about the size of a hamburger patty cook both sides YUMMMMMMMMM Our European ancestors brought KING SALMON to seed our rivers in the South Island so you can still fish for wild salmon though all the salmon you see in the shop's are farmed . Kiwi Rod
Another road trip you could try in the future is gemstone beach I think it is near Fielding you can also find fossils on the beach. A project for now. Your garden beds, the I think they look like sleepers lay on there sides turn them over 90 degrees you could use those long screws that you see on all the programs about Alaska or drill a hole through them & drive reinforcing rod through them to help keep them upright you have just gained another 100 mil of growing space for the plant roots Wow Luna has grown so much in just a few months. Kiwi Rod
Bachs were called that short for bachelors accommodation as lots of unemployed men roamed the country looking for for work during the 30's depression.
Hi you-all We saw you 2 dancing on a previous video do you do BALBOA ???? Why I ask is I also follow Miss Moonshine dance & more, If you do check her out do so after Kara is in bed as she also does flat foot dancing (sort of like tap) & chancers are she will want to learn. Well the shortest day is been & gone spring will be here soooooooooooooooon Kiwi Rod
Hey Rod! We've never tried balboa, but we can swing dance alright.
Hanma
There is really not much to do in New Zealand for young children. Hamner Springs has a ok water park but nothing that will blow you away if your from overseas.
I dunno. Our girls are having all sorts of fun! Parks, bike rides, beaches, good food, wonderful people. :)
They are getting so big❤❤ Beautiful place!
👍👍👍👍
I think you guys are finding way more adventures than id find 😊 well done. Ive been watchimg for nearly 2hrs think im watching video 12/13. Its abig time adventure for me my country of birth 😂😅 shocking 😊

Kia ora, welcome to you both and your family. Great idea blogging your journey down under hope it works out and others follow. Liked subscribed and shared best of luck
Thabk you so much for the warm welcome! :)
💖💚
Looks fun!
I remember the first time I went there , It used to be a mental institute I think. You can't relate to how high the alps are till you see a sheep on the side of them . This time of year after using the oven mum would use the residual heat to bake granny smith apples. What she did was core the apple then stuff the apple with a date then brown sugar then date then brown sugar then etc smother with hot custard then eat YUM !!! Kiwi Rod
Holy cow that sounds good. Going to have to give it a try!
any escaped sugar turns top toffee extra yum
Another awesome video from you guys!! We are coming down to Kaikōura, Hanmer Springs and Christchurch in October. Surprise trip for our girls
How awesome! Our parents are actually coming to visit us from Seattle in about a month - we're planning to do a whirlwind tour of the south island with them. Hope you guys have an awesome visit!!
Hey that sounds awesome. Enjoy the time with your parents. Hopefully they love NZ as much as you guys seem to
Beautiful and wonderful family ❤
Thank you so much!
What a lovely family
Thank you 😊
I love your Family..
Nice family spot, enjoy
You stated on your latest video that if 1 of us kiwis had any questions about the differences between the US & NZ then you will indevour to forefull this pledge. IS NZ MOONSHINE AS GOOD AS WHAT IS PRODUCED IN THE USA & HOW COULD IT BE IMPROVED. As you must have realized by now there isn't that many cities in the USA that have less citizens then a ALL of NZ RODNEY
Moonshine It is high proof alcohol that the manufacturer doesn't pay customs & excise to the government on !!! Moonshine is produced at night, while white lightning is produced during the day. Now there is someone in your hod (CC) who is producing supposedly moonshine because that is what he is calling it, but he is paying the government a moot point you might say. It is not as if we have never had spirit producers here as a hell of a lot Scot's immigrated to Dunedin, then there was the Canterbury gold rush , yes New Zealand has a long history of practicing the craft BUT it wasn't done widely over all of our country , in 20 odd year's our population has more than doubled. Does the man in your hood produce a product equal to what is available in the USA ?????? I know we have a minimum proof content but I am not sure if we have a maximum. You did ask for some ideas DISCLAIMER I am not responsible for any children produced after imbuing or indulging excessively in the SAID products Your Friend Kiwi Rod
To be honest we don't drink much. Probably not something we'd do.
DANGER R18 ADULT CONTENT
Huh?
@@TheMerryMigrants No it's not called HUH the manufacturer is calling it MOONSHINE & it's being manufactured in Christchurch. Let your fingers do the walking & prov me wrong
@@rodduncan1183 I don't understand what you're talking about
I'm wondering if this is the river where they found the dinosaur tracks in the sand stone. I know the stone was uplifted to prevent it being destroyed by erosion or just stolen & exported Kiwi Rod
Yeah! The sign said they'd found fossils there
NZ needs wholesome family people like y'all. Congrats on your visa residency and best wishes for your future
These birds are evil. Satan's minions. Be careful not to get too close coz a demon could transfer to you.
I'm thinking of moving to Christchurch that's why l watch all your vlogs. Keep up the great work 😊😊😊😊
Hey! I'm glad you're finding our videos helpful! Thanks for the kind words. 😊
Uncle Toby is a Australian manufacture, when going through the tunnel we used to take our car out of gear & roll down to Lyttleton, while there did you notice if there is any wharves that you could get access to ??? as you could take the girls fishing then they can relate what they eat to what it came from. You guys should look for a area that has a not to steep slope & some corrugated cardboard & take the girls tobogganing they will both love that . Kiwi Rod
We didn't check for any wharves, but I do like the idea of taking the girls fishing some time. I may need to wait till they're a bit older though. :)
Loving the adventures you go on. On an earlier video clip re Bottle Lake Forest (I think it was) we managed a trip out that way. A good place to chill out. The next time you are in Lyttelton try Hope River Pies. They are brilliant.
Long time since I was in Chch. I was there one week after the earthquake staying with relatives.
Oh wow. I've seen video from that time. It must have been surreal to see. It's a tough little city for sure. They've bounced back well!
I was walking around the Sign of the Takahe a couple of days ago. It's one of a set of four Victorian era resthouses in the hills.
We've been to the sign of the kiwi Cafe but have not done much more hiking out there yet. It's definitely on our list of things to do!
Nice. Cheers
Thanks for the visit!
Are you a New Zealander
We moved to NZ about 5 months ago from the USA
@@TheMerryMigrants I’m a permanent nz dweller a hobbit of sorts and if you are in cristurch you should drive to sumner and explore the caves
Oh sweet! We'll add it to our list. Thanks for the tip!
Definitely coming to the botanical gardens and gelato shop

Reminds me of my childhood 😂❤
We're so happy to give our kids a fun childhood!
Thank you for this video! I’m considering going on this sail for this upcoming October.
You're welcome! We're glad you found the video helpful. We're still new to TH-cam so it's awesome to hear back from viewers.
Glad to see the meeting with the swis army knife parrot went well. You should see the damage those beaks do to cars and the shenanigans they get up to is hilarious. But we kiwis love them, quirks and all.
haha! We've heard that they like to chew on cars. If we drive into Kea territory we might have to do so in a rental car!
Down on Stewart Island you can see Kiwi in daytime sometimes
Thanks for the tip! I think it'll be a while before we can get over to Stewart island, but we definitely have another reason to go now!
Pretending kiwis are interesting is a NZ past time 😊
Haha! I think they'd be more interesting if I could see them, but I'm glad they're not uncomfortable!
Love your videos😊
Thank you! We definitely have room to improve. Let us know if there's anything in Christchurch NZ you want to see us do!
So much fun to check out zoos across the globe. I’m looking forward to seeing this one! And, you didn’t tell us you went to the zoo on Christmas Eve!
We'll definitely take you there!
That kea brings back memories of when I was a child. When I was close to 4, I went to the South Island for the first time. We drove to Milford Sound. Kea’s attacked the rubber on our hire car windows/doors
They really have a taste for rubber it seems! We didn't expect them to just walk right up to us like they did. What a cool experience.
