"The Great Penitence" - the central chant of the penitential liturgy
Central pillar of the twilight liturgy dedicated to Buddha Amida (so called Reiji sahō). If performed in full length this single chant lasts more than 40 minutes. It is one of the most characteristic shōmyō compositions, highly demanding. The chant consists of three parts, different in character (arhythmical - rhythmical - arhythmical). It is a confession of the sins committed in the Past, Present and Future world. The ornamental tradition presented in a shortened version tonight is nowadays practised only in Ōhara (Gyosan) and on Mt. Hiei (Enryaku-ji).

Yanagawa Kengyo Performance by Yuji Kikuo Yuji Kikuo is a performer and teacher of koto, shamisen, and kokyû (bowed lute) in the traditional Nogawa style. Tamuke no Kyoku

Performance by Ryudo Takahashi The discipline of the “way of the bamboo” teaches swaying with the winds of change, continuous growth, and devotion to something higher than the individual. Tamuke literally means “Holding the hands up in supplication to the Lord Buddha”, but it is also a requiem piece- oftentimes performed for departed souls. The piece opens in the lower register, as if a soul we...

well, that was fairly intense!
masterpiece
Thanks for the noble effort :) East Greets East = title of the epochal recording/CD. East Greets East (not the 'east and west') was the title of the epochal recording/CD - a grand overdue idea from Pdt Ravi Shankar & Koizumi Fumio, accomplished in Tokyo in mid-1970s along with three other artists who I was privileged to know personally in my youth. This rendition by two fine artists of present-day Japan and India has its moments, presenting the respective strengths of the shakuhachi and sitar, but coherent rapport between the two traditions is not evident. With more time and attention paid to the vast possibilities of styles and instruments between the Indian and Japanese cultures, the artists could aptly demonstrate the innate affinity. BTW, I was honored to interview Ravi Shankar in his garden in Delhi 1987 (at his invitation) and hear his account of this unique recording experience; and receive kind advice in my own writing from Koizumi Fumio, as well as attend (and graduate, in 1992) from the Bhatkhande Music College (Lucknow) where he had studied in the mid-1960s. My shakuhachi was used to complete the Hindustani classical music 5-yr Visharad course, and our NPO Indo-Japanese Music Exchange Association www.ijmea.net has for 32 years carried out many in-depth projects, events, educational initiatives etc in both countries. < www.ijmea.net and links to elsewhere >
