Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley - known as the West Memphis Three - have been trying to clear their names for 30 years. In 1993, Mr. Misskelley, Mr. Baldwin, and Mr. Echols (16, 17, and 18, respectively, at the time) were arrested for the murders of three 8-year-old boys in West Memphis, Arkansas. Although no physical evidence or motive tied them to the crime, the teens were all convicted. Both Mr. Misskelley and Mr. Baldwin were given life sentences, while Mr. Echols, who the prosecution argued had led the attack, was sentenced to death. In the three decades since the West Memphis Three were convicted, DNA technology has rapidly evolved. In 2007, DNA testing excluded the three from all of the crime scene evidence tested and detected DNA of a man, who could not be identified at the time. Today, advances in DNA technology mean that DNA that could not previously be recovered from evidence - including shoelaces used to bind the children - can now be tested and could lead to the identification of the person who actually committed this crime. However, last year, a Crittenden County judge denied Mr. Echols’ request for new DNA testing of the evidence because he is no longer in prison. While some other states’ laws only allow incarcerated people to access post-conviction DNA testing, Arkansas’ statute does not limit access to testing to those who are currently incarcerated. Mr. Echols has now taken his appeal to the Arkansas Supreme Court. Preventing people from seeking DNA testing after their release from prison impedes justice and would have prevented the exoneration of several wrongly convicted people like Christopher Tapp, Tyrone Day, Marvin Anderson, and Eddie Lowery, whose names were all cleared by DNA testing years after they were released. Justice for the victims in this case and the West Memphis Three should not be denied simply because they are no longer incarcerated. They should not be penalized and robbed of the opportunity to clear their names because they are free. That is why, on June 2, the Innocence Project filed an amicus brief - a “friend of the court” brief offering our expertise based on our experience with DNA testing and innocence claims - to the Arkansas Supreme Court, supporting Mr. Echols’ appeal for new DNA testing of the evidence in his case. Here’s what you should know about the West Memphis Three and their fight for justice: Satanic Panic Mr. Echols, Mr. Baldwin, and Mr. Misskelley consistently maintained their innocence, but the prosecution argued that the teens had killed the boys as part of satanic ritual. Thousands of allegations against innocent people, including the San Antonio Four, arose during the ‘80s and ‘90s as a result of a mass media scare known as “Satanic Panic.” Several people wrongly accused of child abuse during the “Satanic Panic” era have since been exonerated. Coerced confession Mr. Misskelley, who has an intellectual disability, gave a confession after hours of coercive and intimidating interrogations, which were not taped. During these interrogations, Mr. Misskelley, still a child, was not accompanied by his parents or an attorney. Both young people and people with intellectual disabilities are especially vulnerable to falsely confessing when subjected to police deception and intimidation. Mr. Misskelley’s confession was filled with details that did not match the crime scene evidence, yet the prosecution used it to charge Mr. Baldwin, Mr. Misskelley, and Mr. Echols with the crime. Mr. Misskelley later recanted and he refused to testify against Mr. Baldwin and Mr. Echols at trial, and his confession was barred from their trials. DNA has not connected them to the crime Based on the results of the 2007 DNA testing, the men were offered a plea deal in exchange for their release. Mr. Echols was on death row facing execution for the third time, so they accepted. In 2011, they were released after signing Alford pleas - a type of plea that allows a person to maintain their innocence but acknowledge that prosecutors have evidence that could result in a conviction at trial. New DNA testing could uncover the truth Advances in DNA testing mean that today’s tests are more sensitive. New techniques can successfully recover DNA from items (including porous materials like fabric) that could not previously be tested. In the case of the West Memphis Three, that means the shoelaces used to tie up the children who were killed could be tested. This testing could lead to the identification of the person or people who actually committed the crime.

The West Memphis 3 case is still being told that those 3 teens in witchcraft killed those little boys but those 3 teens didn’t do the crime they were arrested for. Now They were looking at the stepfather the west Memphis 3 have been released from prison.

Only Marietta can sing this song. She has a voice like no other in Pentecost she is like a Mickey Mangun only once in a lifetime voice. They are very unique & no one sounds anywhere near them. And when they sing you feel what they are speaking & singing it translates beyond the music and you feel something real true honest loving and when I want to listen to this tune I can only listen to her sing it. She is the real deal I have watched her over the years nothing changes she is still the same Marietta from way back then to today. She believes in what she is singing and she does it because she was called to sing. She is not singing for the money. You don’t see her adorning herself with the riches of this world although I would say if only they wanted to they could like the Manguns Sister Mickey could be riding in limos but they don’t live like that. They are not chasing the things of the world cars houses diamonds pearls ruby’s luxury million $$ homes but they are chasing after God and giving us a wonderful gift of their voice. When it’s real it’s real. My mom was 1 of 9 children that said she would never get into this Pentecostal church but she said what her mom and dad had was real she knew my grandparents had something real in 1986 my mom went to church and Philip Maness said God told him to go ask my mom if she wanted to get baptized that if she went to the alter God would baptize her with the Holy Ghost. and she did and the rest is history. My moms 3rd husband called her pastor and said I thought this would last a few weeks and it’s been since 1986 to 2024 my mom quit smoking drinking stopped playing pool at the clubs stopped going out to the clubs she really got in church. The last one was my mom’s sister Evon we thought there was no hope her and my mom was against this church stuff. But my grandmother would travel around to each kids cities and testify that god told her if she would move from Chicago to Bakersfield CA that God would save her husband and all 9 of her children and it happened. I used to live to hear my grandmother testify and I witnessed it come true. Even grandpa got in this Pentecostal way and he had the happy Goodman’s 8 tracks playing in his Cadillac traveling around from city to city visiting their 9 kids. Even Mama Goff got the holy ghost grandpas mother I love Marietta Wolfe I see a lot of my family in her. They don’t change with the times of this world. This world is not my home I’m just a passing thru. The old songs are not sing any more in churches I’m so glad to hear them coming back. I have a lot of RESPECT for Marietta Elledge Wolfe Webster. She held onto The Rock when the earth all around her was sinking sand she went to the rock of her salvation. She has more fans than I think she realizes. The whole world just loves her. I’m so glad we get to witness this talented Godly Jesus name Holy Roller sing she has come a long way. You can tell when she speaks or sings she is in this because she was called anointed by god. I see my grandmother in her. She stayed the course she never wavered people just cherish her. Because she’s the real deal. They love her spirit and her talent. And they love her walk with God.

I looked up this song because it was on my mind. I’m 52 and I have a cassette tape somewhere of me and my mom singing this when I was about 5 years old. Oh what memories. I know now as an adult what my mom was going through at that time and it breaks my heart and makes me happy at the same time. My mom is still with us 81 years young and she still lives to sing gospel hymns.

This is also one of best songs in the Lanny Wolfe's song book that I have played the piano and sung many times, and each time I just cry because it's a challenge for me to be willing going through sorrow and pain, to give up dreams and plans for God to use me whatever it takes and wherever He can use me for His glory. Each time I sing, I felt as my response to an altar call. God had truly took what I sang seriously, He led me to serve in mission fields that I had to trade comfort for pain, sunshine for rain and even safety for danger. But at those moments I found joy and satisfaction, because those experiences drew me closer to God. I give thanks to the Lord and so grateful for this beautiful song with words that really challenging each one of us daily as we live for Christ alone. I will keep singing this song often, especially when facing challenges and testings, knowing whatever it takes just to be able to draw closer to my God my Lord.
