*Ralph Marterie,* pseudonym of Raffaele Martire (Acerra, Dec 24, 1914 - Chicago, Oct 10, 1978), was an Italian naturalized American swing musician. He emigrated with his family to the United States in the late 1920s. They settled in Chicago, where his father was hired to play with the Civic Opera Orchestra. From an early age on, Ralph played the trumpet. He became the leader of a dance orchestra, formed together with his college classmates. After graduation, he found work as a trumpeter in the NBC Radio Orchestra of Chicago, where he played with bandleaders such as Percy Faith and André Kostelanetz. In 1942, he enlisted in the Navy and became leader of their marching band. After the war, he returned to Chicago and was given the lead of the ABC Radio orchestra. This led to him signing a contract with Mercury Records, for which he began recording occasional singles in 1948. Ralph's new band debuted in 1951. His records sold enough for him to tour, which he organized himself. He began working in Wisconsin, Michigan and other neighbouring states, appearing at Frank Dailey's Meadowbrook Ballroom in Cedar Grove and the Hollywood Palladium in Hollywood. In 1952, his cover of *Caravan* stayed on Billboard's 40 Most Played Songs chart for more than 10 weeks, and he achieved a second "gold" record with Pretend the following year. In 1953, he recorded a version of Bill Haley's "Crazy Man, Crazy," which is generally regarded as the first rock and roll song. His version of this song reached #13 on the Billboard Jockey charts and #11 on the Cash Box chart in June 1953. He had some other minor hits in the late fifties, all covers of the most famous songs of the time such as _Guaglione, Tequila_ and _Skokiaan._ He was also featured in a radio show, sponsored by Marlboro, and also appeared on the television show The Cavalcade of Bands. He suffered a heart attack on a flight from Daytona Beach (where he had just played a tour stop) to Chicago, where he died on October 10, 1978.
