Mount Temple | Best Scramble in Lake Louise Area | Banff National Park | Kev | 2021 August 24
2021 August 24 I summit Mount Temple (Alberta’s 6th tallest summit by height, and my favorite mountain) for a 4th time. No, the scenery doesn’t get old. Earning a view above hundreds and hundreds of peaks when you top this beauty, Temple doesn’t disappoint.
A very short window for hikers to accomplish this summit (~July to ~August), and slightly longer window for the more mountain savvy, this mountain is a nice one to get under your belt. Just be prepared for a long day ahead of you.

Today we hike Sulphur Mountain! An easy peak just outside of the town of Banff, in Banff National Park, Alberta Canada. Does anyone even hike up this one anymore, or just take the gondola? 😅 ehh, who cares. Sulphur Mountain is great for beginners, young or old. Been there last saturday july 20, 2024 man i can relate.. this is the first time i hike a mountain and im out of breathe already after 30mins climbing up, i let my friends go on without me as i dont wanna slow them down and other climber get past me too im shocked little girl and grandma climbing like a piece of cake and as a result i end up alone climbing up never thought i will enjoy climbing alone its kind of refreshing, i don't even care if bear suddenly appear i dont have bear spray or anything in me except my bag with change of clothers, water and chips.. its just pure silent and a little sound of breeze after that hike i have come to realization to boost my stamina and quit smoking..

    I was there July8 (for different hike) and July11,2021. If you are seasoned avid hiker, you can do it under 3hr. Its constant steep climb, with little shade and very steep slippery section 200m before ridge. Dont go if it just rained. Finally, there is "walled off" alternate route with crazy drop offs and scaling down walls. Stay on main route!

    • @KevAlberta
      @KevAlberta 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No scrambling on this route. You will find the worst or most exposed part of the trail is at 5:30 and at 6:20. There is definitely a big drop on the right hand (hiker’s right) side at 6:28. Other than that it’s not the worst. You must use your own judgement if your 14yr old can make it or not

    How difficult is to find the trail after sentinel pass up to the summit? Are there cairns or marks to follow?

    • @KevAlberta
      @KevAlberta 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on a few things, like how experienced you are. There isn’t many cairns or marks to follow. But the path is subtly defined (there is also more than one path, and rock slides that look like paths but aren’t. Following a path may get you lost). If you’re good at route finding and using a map, this scramble shouldn’t pose too much trouble if prepared. If you are unsure of your abilities, go with someone who’s done it before.

    Is it easy with 3 yrs toddler? We hope to get this experience next week?

    • @KevAlberta
      @KevAlberta 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends. If you brought your 3yo on a few hikes already and know how he responds, then it could be a fun day out. If he hasn’t done any hiking, or longer hikes, it might be best to do something smaller first. Some can some can’t, It’s completely determined by the toddler!

I might try it with my mom. 😅 Although I took my fiance on this one a few years ago because I thought it was 'easy', it was his first hike in like 10 years and the switchbacks / altitude was way too much for him. He refused to go hiking with me for like 2 years after that. 😂

    • @KevAlberta
      @KevAlberta 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does doesn’t it! There’s some good opportunities to take photos of ha Ling from this hike. And honestly the difficulty lies within the elevation gain(over 1km). There is no technical scrambling or really any scrambling at all if it’s a dry day. You might use hands maybe 2-3 times to step up/down from small ledges. Almost no exposure to falling, but the trail does sideline a “cliff” for a few meters nearing the summit (shown in video) but there’s lots of room. If you have decent fitness and can follow a trail it should be a breeze 😀

    Great traverse Kev! Do you prefer N-S-W or would taking the West Peak first be a better option? Also, I did not seem to see the slab portion approaching the West Peak, can it be bypassed?

    • @KevAlberta
      @KevAlberta 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did enjoy N-S-W/clockwise route. However, once on north peak, you’re hiking steeply down towards south peak. The trail slopes down out of sight; there’s limited visibility to where you’re being led by the trail. There are some false trails that appear good, but actually lead to unnavigable drops, which can mean some small backtracking and then trying another way. Sticking slightly left helps one find the correct route down. I’d imagine going up this section (counterclockwise) would reduce the chance of using a false trail. Once on south peak, going to west peak is pretty straight forward. The difficulty is once you start going up the west peak, most likely the steepest part of the scramble. I do not recall any slab portions on this part. Although, the west peak does have a trail going down its other side (not used on this loop) that does have slab portions. I’d imagine counterclockwise to be a good option as well. Completing the “hardest” west peak first, going up and down south peak, navigating a steep climb up north peak, then finally using the well worn in trail down from north peak to the trail head. I hope this helps Lloyd!
