Very nicely done, Thank you for linking me here. We do not get snow here in Georgia, but we do get very cold and some still need protecting. So cool, only 2 years late seeing your video. :) ♥
You are so welcome!
This is impressive 👍
Thank you!
I am bit late to this video :) those look very good. Do you protect your fig trees in the winter months? Or do they suffer die back to the ground? Love your videos by the way.
Thank you, very nice to hear! Please check my oldest video on fig playlist and also protection is explained here: th-cam.com/video/CNO645L7oYc/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
Thank you from Canada 🇨🇦
You welcome!:)
What zone are you in? I’m in NY ZONE 5
Zone 6
Very nice for snowy conditions, I have a couple Celeste left, but that's it. We don't get snow here though....but it does get cold. :)
Thanks! How is your Celeste dealing with cold weather?
@@gardenabitdifferently So far so good, but tonight is in the mid 20's so it might take some damage....we will see. I have about 150 varieties outside, but only 4 in ground. Some I am bringing in the garage tonight.
That is amazing, thank you for showing. It is a good lesson to just leave them hanging on the tree even though the conditions are not great. Is the blue bag on the fig to help protect from the snow or the birds?
Thank you! Usually to protect from bugs, ants and snails but now when is so cold is more to protect from mouse, birds and falling down on ground.
This is a very creative method. I am surprised it's not pushed to me earlier. This makes me to think of the way I grow Blackberries. Most blackberries fruit on the second year cane, just like the breba figs. In the end of each season, I cut back the second year cane since they have fruited. I leave the first year cane so they can fruit in the upcoming year. Though blackberries are hardy enough so I don't have to protect the cane but the idea is similar.
Yes, exactly, very similar. I was also suprised that nobody recomends this way of growing figs as it seems for me quite logic:)
Hello I live in Canada zone 6 b. I look forward to trying your techniques. Very interesting. Thank you for sharing. Great video.
Awesome! Thank you!
Great video! Yes! More tastings please!
Will do!! Thank You!
How cold do you get there? -10f? For long periods of time?
Hi, yes, -10F is quite normal temp in Poland but every season and winter can be diffrent as we are somewhere between sea (Baltic sea) and continental climate (Russia on East). We have snow here usually between November and March depends on the region. Latest spring frosts in the middle of May.
Dang that looks good..making me hungry lol :)
looks delicious
Thanks... I always love when you make a video.
Nice to know, thanks!
Thank you for showing how it is done, for people in colder climates and maby also for people with little space. Great!
Nice to know, thank you!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Your figs are wonderful and I'm quite sure they are delicious.
Yes, they are! Thank you for your comment!
What are the fig varieties do you have ?
Fruiting so far are Brown Turkey, Peretta, Michurińska-10, Francesca, Morena, RdB but I have more young figs
Looks beautiful there! I'm growing persimmon "Fuyu" but haven't tasted it yet. Fruits from the shops usually taste really sweet and slightly vanilla-like. I haven't tasted pumpkin flavours yet, but maybe it depends on the type of persimmon. 🌿
Thanks for sharing!
Have you tried ronde de bordeaux? Meant to be an early fig too.
Yes, i have RdB. Very early maincrop confirmed:)
Check here th-cam.com/video/5OR8YvA8roo/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the informative report. I gave Perretta to a friend as a present. Did Poland also had a very warm spring and sudden frost in late april like in Germany? Kicked us back for appr. 4 weeks with respect to ripening 😢
Yes, but we have longer winter and always have sudden frost mid May:) not easy fig life;)
Perfectly ripened!
That's a really good early fig, it's the same or extremely similar to Florea.😊
Thanks for sharing your observation!
Reminds me of Jack fruit flavor but texture like Durian. Have you tried Durian?
Yes, I have. For me completely different fruits, no comparison.
I planted a Brown Turkey Fig tree last year and a cutting from it this year in Louisiana on the zones 8b/9a line. I`ve only seen Celeste in the past though because that`s the type my family had. I wasn`t seeing any figs and pinched most of the tops a week ago to get fresh growth and within a few days I began seeing more and more baby figs on both. I have another cutting growing and I also planted 4 Celeste Figs this year and 4 Dwarf Mulberry trees. They say the figs may not taste good in the first few years and then suddenly the flavor and sweetness get much much better. So don`t give up on a "bad" fig tree. It can eventually surprise you very much. Our fig season can last until late October or November here.
Great that pinching was working for you, too. Good luck with your figs!
That is beautiful!
I'm checking for figlets daily no sine yet how are your trees coming along 😊❤🎉🎉🎉
Да вы чертовы вредители, нельзя так точить секаторы! Подтачивать можно только с одной стороны, где подвод, в плоской стороны нельзя трогать нож, он начнет подрывать.
Do you pinch the new growth? Or you leave them to go strong and tall for next year to bear fruit? I love your videos a lot!!
Sometimes I pinch sometimnes not. If pinched I remove excesive growth and left just one or two new growth.
Very good video. Just got my first fig a few days ago. Also picked up Lee Reich's book on growing figs in cold climates. I'm in the north-west of Ireland, so our winters are a lot milder than in Poland thanks to the maritime effect of the Gulf Stream. But our summers are very unreliable, last year we had heavy rain on almost every day in July. There's a reason Ireland it so green, it's well watered. Lee did an interview on the Joe Gardner podcast which may interest you. If you copy and paste this, you'll find it. 246-Growing Figs Anywhere, Even in Cold Climates, with Lee Reich.
Thank you for sharing this nice interview! Yes you have much milder winters. In your climate focus on finding very sunny place, pinching and pruning to provide a lot of light to branches. South wall would be hot and nice. Some summers and autumns in Poland can be very wet here also and figs are doing still quite well. Fruit spliting is much often when you have mix of very dry and wet periods. If you follow the ruls mentioned I believe your figs will be growing and producing like crazy. Just give the fig one or two season to establish and grow. Good luck!
Can I ask. How do you go about getting the fig from rooted cutting into the ground successfully.
Hi, I have video about this but in Polish channel only. I like rooting in moss sphagnum with normal soil on the bottom below the stick. I move them to normal soil and after late frost in May or later strong new plants just go to ground and are protected as all figs in winter: th-cam.com/video/bufCFyHyobI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Wmak0yn66rCox93Q
Thanks for sharing your method. Your way makes sense to me. I am in zone 6 or 7 here in Utah USA. I have planted 27 varieties of fig. I will be using your method because I have plenty of plants and not enough time to protect old wood in winter. Thanks for so much detail on how you do it. I listen to everything two or three times. You're the best at all the small details! Happy gardening
So nice to hear. I am always very happy knowing that me videos are useful. Thank you and good luck with your figs. With so careful listening and eager to learn I am sure you will be succesful:)
❤❤❤rất tuyệt vời ❤❤❤❤
Thanks!

I’m using wood logs instead of pins and pile up leaves. It’s good to top dress with hey to protect from wind blowing out leaves. But your method is better.
Thanks for sharing!
They you
Beautiful, the persimmon so small and giving you fruit they love you don't give up on persimmons. The fruit taste will develop. Have you tried early varieties of persimmon hybrid like Prok? They are smaller but ripe end of august begining of september. What do you do for dear protection?
Thank you. I have not tried yet. For dears a little animal fat can be used, they do not like the smell.
Very delicious fruit ,good luck always ,greetings from Indonesia ..
AFAIK, persimmons can ripen even after picking. At least those, that are sold in grocery stores, do. Just keep em at room temperature until they become really soft and look almost like they start to deteriorate. At that point they are most delicious. You can add a banana or a ripe apple and keep your picked persimmons in a paper bag for faster ripening. Can you tell, what is the variety of this persimmon tree? Or at least, is it an Asian or American persimmon, or a hybrid? I would like to experiment with persimmons and paw-paws in my climate, but haven't found any nearby source for those trees. I even bought persimmon seeds from the Internet, hoping that if I can't source a young plant, then at least can grow it from a seed. But unfortunately arrived seeds were too dry and did not germinate after soaking. From fruits bought from a grocery store I have found only some very under developed seeds. I haven't got any paw-paws yet. I guess, their seeds must be even more fresh to germinate.
Thanks for sharing
Looking good - the color of the persimmon is beautiful! Your "pumpkin seed" flavor description is apt - persimmon is not one of my favorites (I prefer Quince, no contest❤). But it is a reliable and even prolific choice for winter-ready fruit. There are some differences telling ripeness of astringent or non-astringent persimmons. Climate change has affected the U.S. so much that our agricultural authority (USDA) has had to update the growing zone map. We've jumped from barely zone 7 to 7b, so maybe I'll be shopping for banana trees in a few years. 🤔
Thanks. We also had zone changes here in Poland.
So how to start growingfigs asyou do? You plant a young fig in spring time and than before winter cut it compleatelyto the ground? The following year you live one branch, nex year two and so on?
I always try to leave some last year growh to have a chance to try brebas, so at least one branch is left. The older and stronger fig is the number of last year branches left is bigger as you mentoned. But number can varry a little, it is not a strict rule. Every year i try to reduce fig volume significantly to have nice strong groth next year.
Do you pinch the tree during the winter or in spring ?
Early winter is my time for pruning. Before mid June is my optimal time for pinching.
@@gardenabitdifferently Thank you
I need to start pinching after a dieback. Thank you! 👍
Welcome. Good luck!
Hi from Slovenia! ž In some of your previous videos you showed fig tree Golden Rainbow. Where did you get from? I tried from Albania, but it was a fake - worthless variety miserable fruit an unproductive. Do you have more luck? Regards Kazimir showed fig tree Golden Rainbow. Where did you get from? I tried from Albania, but it was a fake - worthless variety miserable fruit an unproductive. Do you have more lock?
I have Golden Riverside but not fruiting yet.
I love your videos and techniques. I will be doing this this winter.
So nice to read, thanks!
I have just started growing some..such a treat and like you said...Amazing! :)
North America's cold climate "tropical" fruit! Without the recent revival of the species here, and interest around the world, I think this tree would have soon become extinct. Are you going to try to germinate the seeds (they don't come "true", so the flavors will all be different)? Minimally self-fertile, so you need at least 2 trees with different genetics; fertility increases with increased number of trees. Paw paw is a tap-rooted species that needs to be planted in-ground as soon as possible. It can take seedlings up to 7 years to begin producing viable flowers and mature fruit. In the wild, the trees clone themselves by suckers.
Thank you for your very informative input! I already have 10 very young pawpaw in my garden, all are grafted different named varieties.
I like your set up Mira, Hope those fruits ripen for you before the cold hits. :)
Thank you!
Nice Persimmon & Kiwi fruits! My baby Medlars were attacked by beetles and dropped their fruit. I'll be better prepared for next year! 😎
Good luck!
I learn so much every video. 😊 Please keep giving us updates...
Great to hear! New update uploaded today:)
That's interesting! I have Verbena bonariensis blooming next to my figs also. I don't have Michurinska 10 aka Florea yet. I think I should add this cultivar into my collection soon. We have even shorter season here in Estonia than you have in Poland. The winter cold is not an issue, because my protection measures can handle down to -30°C without a frost bite for trees pruned down below 70 cm, so they don't have to start from ground each year. Thank you for your very informative for northern climate videos!
Thank you for interesting feedback from Estonia! Good luck with your figs!
