I received a 1099-MISC for a lawsuit settlement payout and now I owe federal taxes :(. I'm a W2 employee as a Travel SP Tech and make a decent amount of money, but I've never owed like this before. This is largest amount of settlement money I've ever received also but, I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong when I file? I've tried Turbotax and freetaxusa and both are coming back that I owe federal but not state? It's not a huge amount but, I was hoping I would get something back from federal and that's just not the case.
