Vinyl Rules OK
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 22 ต.ค. 2013
Vinyl has been a part of my life for over 40 years. I bought my first single in 1980 and I've never looked back.
When CDs ruled the roost, I was still buying records. I then sold a load when I went travelling and I've regretted it ever since (selling the records, not the travelling).
I love all sorts of music - jazz, electronic, classical, 60s and 70s rock, new wave, punk, blues and folk.
Most of all I like my records to sound great so I thought I'd share a few thoughts on the subject.

My New Harbeth P3ESRXD Speakers - And Why I Don't Need Megawatts to Drive Them
มุมมอง 18Kปีที่แล้ว
At last, after many weeks, I finally brought home my new speakers last week. These Harbeth P3ESRXD speakers are not the most sensitive speakers but they sound gorgeous and I'm only using a 25 Watt amp to drive them because my room is small and my listening position is very close to the speakers - I therefore don't need a lot of power. Also, I have bought some records !!!!!

3 Amazing Vinyl Reissues from Acoustic Sounds - Duke Ellington, Oscar Peterson Trio, Bill Evans Trio

Acoustic Sounds continues to set the bar when it comes to Jazz reissues. I picked up 'Duke Ellington Meets Coleman Hawkins' on the Impulse series, Oscar Peterson Trio's 'Night Train' and Bill Evans' 'Trio 64', both from the Verve series. Fabulous and Outstanding !!!!
I got the Blues !!!! John Lee Hooker's 'The Healer' and 'Chicago - The Blues Today'.

To make a change from the usual Jazz related content, I decided to make a video on a couple of Blues albums from Craft Recordings which sound fantastic. I also pay tribute to The Blues Brothers, who started me off on my Blues journey and also re-introduced the Blues back in the 80s. #vinylcommunity

My Jazz Vinyl Journey - Beginnings
มุมมอง 110ปีที่แล้ว
These are the albums that got me into Jazz. I inherited some Jazz records from my dad but it wasn't until 2010 that I started collecting Jazz vinyl. Now I have around 160 Jazz records, mostly Blue Note and a lot of audiophile stuff. Let me know which Jazz albums started you off on your Jazz journey in the comments.

Vinyl Shootout - Carol King's 'Tapestry' Mobile Fidelity One-Step vs my original & various re-issues
มุมมอง 1.4K2 ปีที่แล้ว
So I now own 4 copies of this wonderful album, but how does the new One-Step from Mobile Fidelity sound compared to previous versions? I compared it on my VPI Prime turntable against my 1971 UK original, the 1980 CBS Mastersound half-speed master and the 2015 Sony Legacy re-issue. Which sounded best??
This week's Essential Listen is......'Destination Out" by Jackie McLean (Blue Note Classic)
มุมมอง 5222 ปีที่แล้ว
Mainly been listening to Jackie McLean's 'Destination Out' which was recently reissued by Blue Note on their Classic Series. Absolutely fantastic album which reminds me very much of Eric Dolphy's 'Out To Lunch'. A stellar recording from 1964 and highly recommended.

Great New records from Intervention and Tone Poet
disappointed to not see a follow up video, I would very much appreciate a chance to hear this set up from the listening position along with learning of any changes or adjustments you may have made over the past year. Thanks very much.
nice to see someone address how they have worked with a small listening space and still have a lovely looking room very inspiring on multiple levels. want to see if you have posted any listening sessions in your room with the Harbeth and if you have made any changes in the past year. well done.
Not made any changes to be honest. The only thing I might change is adding a subwoofer but even then I'm not convinced because the speakers are only conveying what's on the recording. Some tracks are bass light and others aren't. Thanks for the comment
@@vinylrulesok8470 I asked about you posting a video of music playback with the mic at your sweet spot on your couch mainly because you have got a nice sounding room even though it is such a small one. This is evident by listening to the sound quality of your voice within the room on your video where your voice sounds well smooth and well balanced with no sign of any typical room resonances or slap and echo so often heard. I suspect that your comfy couch helps a lot in that regard. I would be interested to hear just what type of stage and image you are able to achieve from your system in a tiny room like this. I will stay subscribed in case you decide to post such a video to display the spatial sonic qualities of your lovely little room. I would also be interested to head just what the Townsend bases you have under your speakers impact the sound quality as well but I realize that would be a lot more work. I will keep an eye out for any such videos. Thank you.
I have a long medium sized room and I'm considering these with a REL T7x sub. We finally have a dealer in town and they are easy to work with around auditions. Can't wait to try them out.
Good luck with that 👍
Just discovered that I have a Harbeth dealer in Montpellier. Spent an hour with passionate owner! Has the whole range in a very nice listening room.
Thanks for the kind comment. Sounds like a great dealer
Can you please tell if you are still enjoying your Harbeths in a near field setup? Thinking of getting a pair?
Very much so. I've had them for over a year now and they are definitely staying. If you want piledriving bass then these are not for you!! Although they're smallish speakers they will give a decent bass performance if the bass is on the recording. If it's there you will hear it. They don't add any as some speakers do. They're extremely faithful to the recording I've found. As long as you drive them accordingly in a small room, they'll impress with imaging and soundstage. Everything is locked in place in a wide and deep sound image.
@@vinylrulesok8470 thank-you
I have 3 grey market reissues, and they sound very good, but the quality of the vinyl is actually worse evn though there is minimal surface noise, and is there a way to make those bootleg labels go out of business?
The Audio Innovations S500 is a fire hazard and a risk to your speakers. I used to have one myself actually a lot of years ago. Never leave it on unattended.
That room is identical to my own, are you in Hampshire? The style of house building is so exact. I would not dare have equipment like that in my house due to the horrendous crime rate in our area (Liss) And a scared to death police force just in case the 'suspects' happen to be black / foreign !
Thanks for the comment. No, I'm in Ireland.
Longer loudspeaker wires would be beneficial.
They're 5m lengths so plenty for this room. I always thought it was better to keep cable lengths short.
Nice to see you back, even if it's only briefly. Thanks for the video - prices are stabilising it seems.
tonar wetgoat 🐐
Which stands do you hope to have? I think open frame stands are suggested, and my own experience is that leaving a little space between the bottom of the speaker and the stand, really opens up the soundstage. They are beautiful. Very happy for you.
Thanks. I'd like to get those open stands you mentioned, still saving !!!
Love MOV records, usually very nicely made and well priced. Ill check out Blue Hour. Moanin is such a classic.. cheers
I know its been 8 months since you posted this video but I just stumbled on it because I've been looking at Harbeth videos. What I find amazing is the Audio Innovations S500 integrated amp. I had one of those back in lhe late 70's early 80's time period. Unfortunely it blew-up for lack of a better term and was beyond repair. I absolutely loved that amp and have always wanted to replace it, but have been unable to find one in reasonably good condition. I certainly hope yours lasts forever. What a great piece both visually and sonically.
Thanks for the comment. Yes, the S500 is a lovely little amp. I've had mine around 10 years or so and it runs beautifully.
Ive got pmc's and heard a lot about Harbeths
I think your record buying this year reflects my own regarding the Blue Note reissues. I did, however, buy this album although I have only played it once! I look forward to getting familiar with it in the new year. Keep up the good work though 👍🏼
Yeah the more I listen to this album the more I like it. Thanks for the comment.
Hiya mate does the zerstat help with clicks and pops?
It helps eliminate static which can sometimes be heard through speakers as a click. Any clicks or pops which are due to imperfections on the record surface it won't help with.
What's your system comprised of?
Turntable is a VPI Prime, with Nagaoka MP150 cartridge, Art Audio Vinyl One phono amp, Audio Innovations S500 integrated valve amplifier and Harbeth P3ESR-XD speakers. Rack is a Finite Element Pagode and TT shelf is by Quadraspire.
ordered the catch a fire jamaican LP like four years ago....still waiting.
That's not good !!!
Use the zero stat while holding the album. The album should not be on the turntable.
Hmmm, interesting. I might try that. Thanks for the comment.
I disagree with the name of the channel. It must be „CD rules“!
Or OCD Rules !!
That's a beautiful and sturdy hifi rack👍
Thanks for the kind comment. It's a rack made by Finite Element of Germany, This one is the Pagoda
I have been looking for a copy of Joan Armatrading and gave up. Great news .
Ah, that Joan Armatrading is a great reissue, if a tiny bit sibilant in places. Thanks for the comment.
What about adding a subwoofer? Just asking
I'm considering it, but enjoying them very much as they are to be honest. I don't really play much bass heavy stuff.
it's very difficult to demo these loudspeakers as I live in France. i have a small listening room and could be the right ones for me? @@vinylrulesok8470
Nice Chanel . I live in france. Plenty of bargains here in my region- Montpellier
I bet there are !!! I picked these up in a lovely little record shop in the Vendee.
Let's have that follow up! Discovered these today. I have a similar small room. Currently have Q Acoustic 5010's and Monitor Audio Radius 90's "on loan". The P3's are a significant jump in price, but I'm currently chasing the dragon.
Will you be doing a full review if these beauts?
I will, hopefully soon
I’ve a small room, with an Elex - r amp, currently using Dali Oberon 5s but would these Harbeths be worth the stretch?
I can't answer that but I suggest you audition them and see if they work for you in your room
Tou need watss to drive them! In near field they are so great that i wanted for PC setup but to rear wall they do not play they need 2 meters of air and near field, magic happens! Now i has C7xd ;)
No Jazz?
Fantastic! New subber here, happy to be aboard! 😊
Thanks for subscribing and the kind comment.
@@vinylrulesok8470 😊
I was at a great demo by harbeth main man.
Were you tempted? Which speakers did you listen to?
hello there was no way to compare them with PMC 5.21i?
Errr, no 😄 sorry, I'm not familiar with the PMCs
@@vinylrulesok8470 thanks for the answer
Those Harbeths are very neat, they must be some of the best sound per square inch speakers out there! :)
Thanks. I've been breaking them in over the last 2 weeks and they're sounding very very nice right now.
Nice. Didn't know about the Chicago record at all. Good to see you posting regularly, these videos are a welcome shift in tone from many out there and deserve a bit more exposure :)
Thanks for the kind comment. I'm trying to find a copy of Volume 2 of that Chicago Blues LP.
New to the channel - nice video thanks for making. I have about half a dozen of the CBS Half speed masters from the early 80s. The first one I picked up was the Boston self titled debut about 2 years ago and it absolutely destroys my UK first pressing. I haven’t paid any more than 20 quid for any of them and I will definitely buy more if I see them in the wild, but not prepared to spend more than say 30 quid on them. With regards to Tapestry it was never a well recorded album so it’s really a case of just making it as good as possible. I’m too lazy when it comes to 45rpm 2LP reissues and I do feel it spoils the flow of an album so the difference has to be quite marked for me to go down that route. Anyway I sold my Tapestry One Step when I got the CBS mastersound as I was more than happy with the sound of it. Take care, cheers.
Thanks for subscribing. I think you made the right choice. Iam very impressed with the CBS Mastersound and although the One Step does improve on it, it's only marginally better and in my opinion not worth paying the premium price. And you're right, Tapestry was never the best recording. Thanks for the comment
Nice SL7, I have one.
The SL7 is a great little turntable. A beautiful design and sounds wonderful if you can get a decent P mount cartridge for it. It's my backup TT. Thanks for the comment
The Mulligan LP (his great band with incomparable Art Farmer) was originally on Mercury - absolutely tops fr late night romantic manuevers
Haha I bet it is!!! Thanks for the comment
If you get a chance to try the Revel M126Be speakers, they are insane. I have never listened to music which just appears out of thin air. When I close my eyes you would not have a clue as to where they are. I was listening last night, and the music was hanging in mid air. Amazing experience. Just goes to show what research and engineering can achieve. Hope you have many happy hours with the Harbeth speakers.👍 Just got myself a new turntable and phono amp that was made by Michael fidler, that is also fantastic. I been left three thousand LP's by my late uncle, so I got plenty of material . But I did splash out on" kind of blue 45 UHQR ", holy cow !
I always lusted after a pair of Revel F208 speakers but I think they would have overloaded the room. That experience you describe is exactly what I'm getting from this set up. It's magical when it sounds like that. The speakers completely dissappear. Enjoy your inheritance and thanks for the comment
Superb vid! Nice intimate set up there! Great records. Love those Art Peppers!
Thanks 😊 I got that Stanley Turrentine because you enthused about it recently so I thought I'd give it a go. Love it !!! And those Art Peppers are a great listen.
I have a few of the tone poet pressings, they are very good value for money. I was always a bit sceptical about going back to vinyl, but it has moved on vastly from when I was young. Now I can stream, play CDs and enjoy my vinyl. I have been listening to lots of soundtracks lately, vertigo and the pink panther are my favourite at this moment.
@@r423sdex I love the Vertigo soundtrack. Bernard Hermann was brilliant.
Any reason for not going with headphones? One aspect I like about speakers is feeling the bass through the body, but given the near field setup, playing at low volumes and no sub there wont be a gain in that sense.
I'm not the biggest headphone fan but even if i was the depth of field and imaging I'm getting with this set up would be hard to beat. Thanks for the comment
It's a strange one with headphones, I got myself a topping a90 headphone amp and some sennheiser 660, but although they sound amazing I still prefer my speakers by a huge margin.
I bought catch a fire and burning from universal then as we all know had to wait next few yrs until they have seen the light and as with a lot people had been sent out free copies by universal Thank jah my copy's are ok as I've read on the steve hoffman forum many copy's of theses pressings came badly warped and scuffed because they used paper sleeves God knows why makes no sense Also as they have been in storage over last few years and been stacked on top eachother I asume the hot conditions of jamaican weather haven't been kind to lot pressings eg warped and damaged copy's It's nice to have the pressing of catch a fire with the tuff gong red label with the drummer boy on it as an original go for big prices now I live in Australia and I hate to think if they sell copy's here how much they will go for
Thanks for the comment. These 2 seemed to be pretty perfect in terms of what's you'd expect from a new pressing, even if the sound quality wasn't amazing.
I thought for a mo that you might have popped in to see Fred at Sam records (in Paris).
Wish I could. Its something I've been thinking about as I'm often in France. I'd love to visit Sam Records
Just bought the whole set every album off Amazon US
Nice !! I had to limit my purchases so went with Exodus and Catch a Fire. Which albums are your favourites?
Nice one, got Exodus ordered from this...much cheaper than Amazon they are for sale! Not ordered from this outlet before (hope all ok) cheers
I ordered Exodus and Catch A Fire. I’m a bit of a noob with Bob Marley so only went for a couple of titles I’d heard good things about. Hope they sound good. Are they on Amazon too?
I really wish that Sony would get on this and do their own series doing the back catalogue of Columbia records. A glaring omissions in today’s market I think. I know that there’s a Japanese series, but I’ve never seen them sold over here in the UK. Yes, there are copies of MoFi and Analogue Productions floating around, and Music On Vinyl is doing a stellar job, but a full on series with the global reach of Acoustic Sounds / Tone Poet / Classic Vinyl would be incredible.
I agree. That would be amazing if Sony would go down the same road as Verve, Impulse and Blue Note.. Thanks for the comment.
That Propaganda is a real surprise. I love Duel but never got the album.... well, not yet anyway :)
Yeah, A Secret Wish is a really good listen, really well produced.
Great to see you back! Looking forward to seeing the Harbeths.
Why would someone, after paying $ for a pair of speakers, want to hide them? I recently purchased a 2023 Corvette ZO6 coupe. It was fairly expensive. I am not going to hide it, in the back part, of our 25 acres. I know that is not quite the same but you get the idea.
Haha, good point. What I meant by make them disappear was that the sound seems to come from elsewhere other than the speakers. I'm envious of your Corvette though!!!!
OIC. Lol I was a bit slow on that. I bet you would rather have my pair of B & W 801D's in black than my black Corvette. Attractive young women like the 'vette but not my expensive audio gear. I brought a date home recently. She looked at my speakers and said: " God I bet you paid 3 or 4 thousand for them. I have an 1897 phono that is worth 15K! Been handed down to me and with about 25,000 78 rpm records. I use a modern state of the art turntable to play them.
There is a good reason they are rare: they did not sell!
Actually in many cases the opposite happened, print volumes were limited and they sold out.
