PRS Special Semi-Hollow: Tone Test (Clean to Mean)
Just an impromptu sit down and plug in with this 2023 PRS Special Semi-Hollow. Running through many tones from super clean, to driven, to chunky overdrive, to high gain. Lots of great tones in these pickups and a super versatile guitar overall 👍🏼

In my opinion, the tones from this guitar are great with every pickup setting. How does the little semi-hollow affect the sound?
@@JoonKimDMDKind of difficult to say: it is actually more hollowed out than it appears to be, and it certainly makes the guitar extremely lightweight.
@@riffs66 Oh~ I didn't know it affect the weight. I was a fender strat player and PRS DGT core is too heavy for me. I am about to switch to PRS CU24 because it has thinner neck for my small hand and also 1~2 lbs lighter than DGT. PRS sound with strat weight would be awesome but I guess that's why silversky exists. Besides the weight, what do you think of the sound? DGT is too Gibson like and I have hard time making transition from Fender Strat's bright sound to this dark and hot sound.
@@JoonKimDMD This guitar has a super wide range of tones. The pickups as humbuckers are not as dark as a Les Paul tone, and when you do the combo settings and the tapped positions, it sounds EXTREMELY close to a Strat. All in all, every setting is useful and musical, in my opinion - very different than a standard PRS with two humbuckers. Try one if you’re able 👍🏼
So cool playing Joe, if I lived in your town I would want to be one of your students too! I have played one of these in a music store straight into a Fender valve amp with its inbuilt Reverb but didn’t sound as good as the tones in your video. May I ask what FX unit (if any) and amp you are playing through? Thanks Joe, the guitar tones in your video sound fabulous! All the best. Cheers 🤗. - wow, what a choice maple top PRS guitar!
@@garzoroberto7623 Thank you, sir 🙏🏻 Using a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe here with an Xotic SP Compressor.
Wow, is it comfy to play without any comfort cuts? I cant play guitars like Tele s with those sharp edges at the body
@@mordomaniac I’m absolutely the same way but somehow I’m comfortable on this guitar. I got used to it quickly and the edges don’t bother me 👍🏼
@@riffs66 THX so much!
Is that the regular special or the 10 top? It sounds amazing.
Excellent guitar! Not a 10 top, just “regular”, although it looks amazing. Thanks 🙏🏻
@riffs66 honestly, I don't see what al the hype is about with a 10 top.

I am sorry for your arthritis... Hope it stays where it is. Stay strong💪 What about your Suhr and Cutlass? Is there big difference in quality? I know that they are different specs, but I have dilemma between these two. What to choose? Thanks
@@hansschloss4630 Thank you 🙏🏻. All things considered, my preference is definitely the Suhr. I prefer the fingerboard radius, the neck shape, and the overall comfort of the Suhr. Whenever I want to test a new pedal or dial in an amp, that’s the guitar I reach for first - absolutely. I currently have 3 Suhr models (Legacy, Custom Classic, and a Classic Pro) and they’re virtually perfect. The ONLY slight negative of these three is that the Classic Pro is a little heavier than I’d like - but it also is probably the best sounding overall. The Cutlass is also very very well made, sounds really good, and plays well, but I wish the fingerboard was a little flatter than 10” (just my preference), it’s also very lightweight. They’re close! But the Suhr guitars are my favorites.
Thank you very much😊
Sounding great! I ordered one exactly like that one last week and it just came in today! 😀
Nice! 🙏🏻

Thank you for the demo. Hard to find a video with great tone and solid guitar chops with this guitar. Sounds like a dark strat.
@@DeathScythe_XXG Thank you - I agree: it does sound like a darker/richer Strat 👍🏼
Hi Joe, can you tell me what amplifier and wich pedals you use to get this sound ? I'm really looking for this kind of sounds, it' so nice. Thanks you ✌️
@@martoni3214 Hello! These kind of medium overdrive tones I get with any tube amp that gets a full, clean tone. I always use a compressor first (I like the Xotic SP Compressor), then an overdrive (maybe a Greer Lightspeed or a Wampler Moxie) then a bit of delay and reverb. Thanks for checking in 🙏🏻

@@JuanPerez-xg6lt I use Factory 781 & 786 for everything. ¯\_(ツ)_/
You play beautifully! I have a question: do you think this pickup set is better for this type of guitar than the Air Classic?
I still think the Air Classic is fantastic and would be great in this type of guitar. Thanks for the kinds words 🙏🏻
Amazing tone! Hey man, have you already tested the EMG S? Is there much difference in relation to SA? Which one has more gain and a nicer, more open clean sound? Thank you for your attention.
I haven’t tried the S type EMGs since forever. I think the SA is alnico magnets 🧲? I’m sorry I can’t give a good answer.
I couldn't help but notice that this demonstration video is slightly longer than usual. Does this mean that I am going to be getting messages with photos of your own PRS Special Semi-Hollow body guitar in the near future?
@@mendittoamplification 🤔
That is a lovely palette of sounds.
The cleans on that PRS are spectacular.
@@weets69 Absolutely - they nailed the tapped humbucker tones and the narrow field middle pickup makes those “in-between” positions sound extremely Stratocastery 👍🏼
Sounds Awesome! 🔥🤘

I was having a lot of problems with my FM9 and Suhr PT15, when I went to the Hombre, problem solved.
The PT15 IR and FM9 do not play well together.
Joe, I just got the fm9 and own a Suhr Pete Thorn with two thornbuckers. My guitar sounds very tiney on a couple of settings your guitar did also. Not sure what is going on with my guitar, and thoughts
Can you possibly make a video of the issues your describing and reply with it here?
@@riffs66 HI Joe, I have not worked enough with TH-cam and recording to make such a video. I appreciate you getting back with me, not quite sure where to go from here. But, it seems the Suhr Pete Thorn is part of the problem.
@@jnparesa are you getting tinny tones out of the split (coil tapped) positions?
@@riffs66 I tried all the positions on the guitar. I am running my FM9 through a Suhr PT15. It sounds pretty darn good straight. I also bought a Suhr hombre and with my Tele it is the best sounding amp I have ever owned. Today, I will move the FM9 to the Hombre and see how that sounds. I purchased a Mighty Dog Guitar, my gosh it is like nothing I have ever played.

Hi Joe. Great playing as always. Do you only have 2 trem springs? And why?
Yes, 2 springs on this guitar. It just worked out that way. The springs are on the heavier side tension wise, and once the claw was adjusted so that the bridge was decked on the body, these 2 springs just balanced correctly. 👍🏼Thank you very much 🙏🏻
Can these tones be had on the cheaper fractal models? Great sound. Sounds like Journey Also do you ever play this out of a cabinet ?
I’m sure the FM-3 can get all these tones. I’m using 2 amps but the blend is not 50/50. 80% of the tone is a single amp with the other slightly faded in. I’ve actually never used the Fractal thru a guitar speaker cab, or through the FX loop of a tube amp… I should, though.
@@riffs66 what do you play it through?

Hey Joe 🙂 I recently got the same guitar and I want to have the Fantom in the neck as well. I am wondering how the Fantom compares to the 36th in die Bridge output-wise. Is a 36th Anniversary enough to balance with the Phantom?
I think the 36th is a good match for the Fantom. NOTE: the Fantom can and should be set quite close to the strings. Compared to a real P-90, it works better (and blends best) with it set higher than you might expect.
Nice playing and tone. What’s your favorite or recommended HSS pickups combination?
Thank you 🙏🏻: I’ve had good luck with a few different setups. I like the Suhr SSV+ and their 60’s singles, also like the Thornbucker Plus with a couple of DiMarzio Area 61s. I’ve also been loving a set of EMGs: 85/SA/SA - all do something cool!
