Farming with natural systems at Tolhurst Organic
มุมมอง 13314 วันที่ผ่านมา
Iain Tolhurst NBE is a pioneering organic farmer and owner of Tolhurst Organic Farms. This farm has made quite a name for itself because it is able to feed 350 families on 14 acres of what is classified as poor quality agricultural land up to now, without any government subsidies. He manages this land with minimal external inputs to the farm. This means no chemical fertiliser or pesticides. He ...

Kent Wildlife Trust meets new Gillingham and Rainham MP Naushabah Khan

We want our newly elected MPs to not only give us a voice in parliament but our wildlife too. That is why we have written to all of Kent’s MPs and invited them to meet with us so we can discuss how together we can create a #WilderKent and put nature at the heart of the decision-making process. Last week, we met Polly Billington, MP for East Thanet where we discussed our concerns around National...

    Would you believe Turtle Doves are feral in Australia? They were released into the wild and are now everywhere in populated areas. We have some really delightful small doves, about 1/2 to 2/3rds the size of Turtle Doves, they are much more interesting.

    As a business, they will always go for the lowest-cost route. I say, pay for more expensive route, taking into account the value of wildlife. Too many wet fields full of lapwings bulldozed over and never used. Too may verges dug-up by utility companies & left spoilt. The direction of travel is ALWAYS downwards.

    These cable links are vital for achieving net zero; as are projects like the high voltage pylons that the green party are opposing in East Anglia. There's always a good reason why this or that project shouldn't go ahead but if everyone gets their way no new renewable infrastructure will be built and we will miss our climate goals.

    • @RussTillling
      @RussTillling หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes. However, the implication is that the alternative routes would cost £x more to use. As a business, they will always go for the lowest-cost route. I say, pay for more expensive route, taking into account the value of wildlife.

    The description of the project says that the River Darent stretches from Westerham to Shoreham. Is this referring to the boundary of the project, as the river itself continues to Dartford? Beautiful video.

    • @kentwildlife

      Hi Gillian, yes that is the boundary of the project. The landscape recovery project area extends from Westerham to Dartford and not into the Lower Darent. The 20th century witnessed massive destruction of wildlife and its habitats. What did Sir David Attenborough say about the world’s population in his lifetime, it has trebled! The one thing there isn’t a shortage of is humans. I hope that the 21st century will be when humans give our fellow planetary inhabitants, equal rights to exist with us. Projects such as this a part of this journey. Well done to everyone involved, keep it growing.

    We should follow the 10metre rule with all wildlife. Interestingly India’s wildlife parks follow this rule. All park vehicles have to maintain a 10 metre distance from tigers, elephants, antelope, bears, wild dogs….. Sadly unlike Africa where no respect is given to wildlife, you often see cheetah on the top or underneath safari vehicles, elephant coming way to close, even buffalo putting their heads in to safari vehicles. Well done Kent Wildlife, keep up the excellent work educating all the us.

    I love what are doing. I am hoping you are able to join up the various bits of land right up to the old MOD land by Canterbury Golf Club. Only by making these wild areas big will they be able to restore our depleted landscape. Remembering the UK is in the bottom 10% of the countries in the world for biodiversity. We have a long way to go.
