I seen Yes, GFTO tour of 77 at Freedom Hall in Louisville, KY. Awaken is my personal all-time. Yes, song. This song has so much emotion. I purchased a T-shirt at the show. Yesshows Tour 1977. I was so proud to sport that cool concert t-shirt going back to start my senior year in high school. The concert ticket was 7.50 with floor seating. Those were the days. Thanks for posting this classic Yes live track.

Maybe a spinal tap cape but the dude delivered the goods. On the album he plays in a Swiss church over phone lines. Sidebar; I always found his use of the Mellotron the most subtle, like you hardly knew it was there. Deep respect.

Wakeman brought showmanship To the Band . Humor as well as his great musicianship. Patrick Moraz on Relayer was great as well. But Wakeman is YES . That Classic Lineup. But post YES. This Shines.

  • @smitlag

Rick's keyboard rig is just silly. It would be one thing to have a real B3, one workstation like a Kronos and then whatever analog synths he likes. But to be surrounded with workstations either points to inability to program on his part or just pure show. Every keyboard should have a dedicated purpose. And a few such as a real Hammond are uncopyable. He is a great player and showman though. And a total riot listen to.

Not Franz Liszt or Vladimir Horowitz but those guys had bigggg hands. I remember Yes opening for Poco in the very early 70's and both groups were great (I went mostly for Yes) both responded to the applause and performed encores.

Apparently he used to live in South Wales, I put a pebble against the window of his house or the new people who bought it, my dad gave me a right good thrashing, but it has stuck in my mind did he live in Cardiff near Ely, I was a terror, but glass is delicate, thankfully I am more civilized almost 50 years later.

Interestingly, RW is playing in the key of E Minor, even though the actual pitch is D Minor. Obviously, the key was transposed down to make it easier for JA to sing, but RW didn't want to re-learn the whole thing in D Minor, and decided to transpose the keyboard(s) down a whole tone so he could finger in the original key.

Fantastic to see ARW giving this their treatment, but I have to agree with other comments about this not really building on the original. If you watch the 'making of GftO' series, the level of detail that went into layering the keys on Awaken (particularly), and the subsequent paring down of the guitars (the making of vid shows Howe totally overplaying bits and still sussing things out), makes you really appreciate the balance they struck with the album in general and Awaken particularly. It really blows the lid off everything else they did before or after. Funny, people always cite CttE as their best album (for good reason), but personally, I find myself listening to GftO more often. I've grown bored of CttE for some reason.
