Loved the movie, and so appreciated hearing David's heart today. I was happy to see other videos that spoke to the family's relationship with Carmen was love and gratitude, even though the movie points to the broken deal with Carmen as being the catalyst for the financial distress early on. Awesome story

The comment about the new ministers needing a sabbatical (around 16 minutes in) made me laugh and cry at the same time. I remember being the underpaid, overworked young minister who was being expected to do 50 hours a week at the church while getting paid 1/4 time, while also having to work a full time job elsewhere, while also going to seminary, and also tending to a wife and young children. And yes, I needed a sabbatical after a couple of years of that, because there was no vacation time allotted for a "part time" pastor even though I was killing myself burning the candle at both ends and in the middle in several places. Rather than the church recognizing that it had enabled me to create the unhealthy work life scenario and empowering me to focus on fewer things, it was happy to ask me for more until I physically broke. My body broke down at the age of 30 and I had to step out of ministry for medical reasons. The old saying is true: if you don't choose to rest, your body will choose for you. I feel like you're meaning to address the entitlement attitude of the inexperienced pastor who's fresh out of seminary, at their first lead pastor role, wanting to come in twice a week to work (one staff meeting day and one preaching/service day) and that person complaining about how hard it is and how stressful it is and how they need a sabbatical after not really doing any work, making others do all the work and taking all the credit. Because I've seen that and it offends me deeply because they haven't earned it. BUT... just because I went through an unhealthy period of no work/life balance early in ministry where I was running at a strong clip for extended periods of time, instead of walking at a sustainable pace with occasional sprints, that does not mean I wish the same cycle to be repeated for those fresher on the journey. I'd wish healthier, sustainable rhythms, with lots of rest. Americans do not rest as much as we should, and American churches lead the way in creating unhealthy paradigms of overwork and overcommitment without enough focus on the "Jesus often withdrew" example we have.
